61Isometric Exercises and Plyometric Exercises to Add to Your Strength Training Exercise Routine
Not everyone can afford to be a body builder. It takes a great deal of time, energy, and money to build lots of muscle. I'm a father of a 2 year old son and I am way too busy to hit the gym consistently. That's why my strength training exercise routine includes plyometrics and isometric exercises. Here are the benefits of isometric exercises:
- They're free
- They're incredibly easy to learn
- They can be done almost anywhere (including in line at the grocery store)
- They are very effective for building muscle fast
I like plyometric exercises because:
- You can gain explosive power by doing pretty regular exercises (push ups, running stairs, jumping, etc.)
- They're free
- They can be done almost everywhere
- Martial artists and athletes that need to deliver a lot of power very quickly use plyometric exercises.
I have been a martial arts enthusiast most of my life and have always appreciated isometric and plyometric exercises as an alternative to weight lifting. I've been partial to body weight exercises, but isometrics and plyometrics helps me kick it up some more.

Plyometrics for Athletes and Martial Artists
If you have super human strength like Wolverine or Mighty Mouse, you do NOT need to read this...
But if you're an athlete, martial artist, military professional, or fitness enthusiast, you might consider plyometrics as part of your strength training routine. They are super effective at creating power. Remember from physics class that Power = Work/Time. So you can be very strong, but if it takes a long time to get the job done, you have little power. Plyometrics are effective at building power because in addition to developing strength, these exercises have an explosive ending (typically a jumping movement) causing the muscles to contract very quickly and exert a last bit of extra effort.
