Blue Mosque?

Ever heard of the "Blue Mosque"? Weird name at the first look, right? H

However people call it like that for a reason!

Istanbul Sultan Ahmet Mosque

The Blue Mosque

Sultan Ahmet Mosque is one of the most interesting places to visit in Istanbul. Built by Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, it is a master piece of work and a well known attraction site for visitors.

It is also named as the 'Blue Mosque' because of the blue tiles which covers its interior mostly on the upper level.

Why was it Built?

The Blue Mosque was ordered by Ahmet I to compete with the Ayasofya, a master piece of the time. The artitecht who designed it was Mehmet Aga, who is a pupil to Mimar Sinan. It took 7 years to build it from 1609-1616.

Location

The mosque is located on the old palace of Byzantium and faces directly the Ayasofya. Its up to us to decide which one is more fascinating. However you can still feel that both of them have their own magnificense.

What to see!

There are alot to see in the Grand Blue Mosque. First there is the most obvious thing that the mosque has 6 minarets, while many other mosques have less than that. Then there is the blue tiles which are over 21,00 in numbers. Also, the central dome will amaze you with its 34 meter hight and how its supporterd by smaller domes and giant pillars supporting it.

Special Ramadan Month

Finnally, if you have the chance, be sure to visit it during Ramadan to see the book fair in its avlu(courtyard). You can also see several stands for local food and souviners, such as writing your name in calligrafy style or you can take photos in ottoman clothes.

Remember Don't Forget (ADAB YAHU)

There are things you should pay attention to, if you visit the mosque:

  1. The mosque is open for visitors for most of the time. However, you should be aware that it is closed for visitors during prayer times and Friday prayers for about half an hour.
  2. For an advice if you do not want to wear a scarf used by other people while entering the mosque make sure to have your own proper clothes, as a respect to the mosque and the worshipers, who are praying inside.
