Prohibition does not work

History has proven that prohibition doesn't work, and that goes for Marijuana too.  What harm would come by legalizing marijuana?  Put aside everything you were taught as a kid and really think about that: I think most of us would come up with the same answer, nothing!  Despite what politicians want us to think, marijuana is not dangerous.  When was the last time you heard of someone overdosing on marijuana?  Answer: you haven't, it hasn't happened.  Now, some would say that it's the "gateway drug"... my problem with that is more people try beer and cigarettes before weed, so I would label those as "gateway drugs" before marijuana.

Now, what good could come from legalizing marijuana?  A lot actually.  #1 It would reduce crime; yes, I said reduce crime.  If legal, it would eliminate the black market for marijuana (don't believe me, read about the prohibition of alcohol) - if legal, it can be controlled and regulated - and you wouldn't have to go to your local drug dealer to obtain it.  Legalizing the #1 cash crop in the US would cripple the drug cartels - the biggest part of their business would no longer be needed.  #2 It would generate much-needed cash from tax revenue; afterall, it is the #1 cash crop by some estimates.  If legal, dispensaries could be set up all across the US and states could receive sales tax from marijuana as well  #3 Reduce government spending.  Billions of dollars have been spent fighting marijuana-use, and it clearly hasn't worked (marijuana use has increased).  In addition, millions of taxpayers dollars are being spent on non-violent drug offenders sitting in jail.  Should a "pot-head" really be sitting in the same jail cell as a murderer or rapist?  #4 Health benefits.  Research has shown that marijuana does have medicinal value.  Many countries have done extensive research on marijuana and found many positives including relieving pain and stress, improving mood and increasing appetite.

Now, I ask you, why again is it illegal?  Could it be that nobody from earlier generations want to admit that they were wrong?  I would like to know the real reason.
