Item ideas for a game

Have you noticed that most games these days use very bland items? Every rpg has the standard set of potions, and even using more of them for spell or stamina power as well. Most fps games have the same weapons. I could go on and on about them, and other game genres...

This hub for game developers is about getting new ideas to make your items stand out from the crowd. Why not use real life inspiration? It's amazing what you could find if you just walked outside and looked around, letting your imagination run it's course.

One tool I like to use is an item generator. There's a few around this web, but this one was based on Diablo and Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction by Blizzard. It pumps out a few items from that roleplaying game with every mouseclick. Some of the equipment names are great for suggesting ideas to your mind.

Of course, a tool like that one doesn't really solve the problem if you don't apply any thought to it. The names are coming from another game afterall! What type of theme do you want yours to have? It helps to get your inspiration from things that match. A silly game? Try watching looney tunes! A detective game, like those hidden object ones? Read a detective novel or watch CSI.

Here's a few examples that popped into my head while writing this:

  • Rubber Mallet. Suitable for a roleplaying game that doesn't take itself too seriously. This item removes the Confusion status on someone.
  • Spectral Scanner. Look around an area and reveals any enemies around that might want to fight you, or could locate clues of some sort.
  • Pocket Firefly. Heals your characters as you hold it in your hand and get envolped by their light. Who needs potions anymore?

The point is this. Don't settle for crappy item ideas when you've got the whole world you can take some from. Your games should have some originality if you want people to take the time to play them.
