It's On Random - My Life, Universe and Everything
53Allow Myself to Introduce...Myself
I suppose it's best to begin with one of these, even if it isn't particularly exciting.
My name is Katherine Fulton. I was born and raised in Northeast Ohio, where friends and relatives alike noted that I had two main obsessions - music and words. I suppose that's par for the course for a Gemini, but it was still seen as odd by some. It still is, truth be told. After participating in music throughout high school, I discovered that while I loved to perform, I actually wasn't all that keen on the thought of doing so for a living. With that in mind, I went to college for journalism and graduated with a degree in 2003.
I went on to have a three year stint at a trade magazine company. The publishing experience was good, but I still wanted to write about my passion. I landed a gig as a freelance writer in 2005 with the Cleveland alt-weekly Scene, and I also began volunteering at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The following year, I got a story into Alternative Press - while it was small, it inadvertently led to something far greater than either money or fame. While checking out their forum to get an idea of their reader base, I was struck by the postings from a young man in Ireland whose wit, eloquence and musical tastes impressed me enough to say hello. It was the best decision I ever made. We were fortunate enough to meet in person and tell each other how we really felt (namely, that we had fallen in love), and we've been an item ever since. We're currently trying to devise a way to bring him to the United States that doesn't involve a hasty wedding, but...well, I'll post more as it develops. In the meantime, you can check out his YouTube videos when children or the easily offended aren't around.
In 2007, I finally landed a dream job at All Music Guide, where I wrote about artists, reviewed albums, and did a bunch of other stuff that I really loved. Unfortunately, I was laid off in August 2008 due to corporate cutbacks, so now I'm looking for a new full time job that will allow me to write about my passions - music, film, sustainable living, gardening...the list goes on and on. My ultimate dream would be to parlay this setback into a job at Rolling Stone, but we'll just see how that goes...
