It's The End of the World, What are You Doing About IT?

What are You Doing to make Things Better?
Once again doom and gloom are all over the headlines and Armageddon seems certain. Iran wants the bomb, Israel has it, Earthquakes, Hurricanes, and Rising Temperatures Oh My! The time is near, the time is here, the time is right. Maybe I should take this all a bit more seriously, maybe the end has arrived, maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and star in my own "Left Behind" Saga. Maybe we should all be a bit more concerned about right now and what we will do with it then what may or may not happen tomorrow, or 2012 or at any time predicted by the enlightened purveyors of conspiracy. Let me be clear that I'm not trying to make light of religion or any belief, however I do think its time to face reality. We are all still here. The end of the world has come and gone a hundred times over and yet we are still here. Since we're still here how about we start doing something to make things a little better on this floating mud ball called earth. Maybe we'll even have a little fun, make a few friends and just maybe live this thing called life instead of filling our days with worry and woe.
A Terrible Thing Called Fear
Have you ever been afraid of something? You know that feeling that holds you back from doing things you should or maybe even want to, the one that keeps you in regret and mad at yourself for years to come, that's called fear. Unfortunately these days it seems that people all over the world are allowing this emotion to cloud their judgment, to blind their eyes, and sadly rule their lives. What's really and truly sad is most don't even realize what's happening. They call it good sense, or realism, or being prepared. They debate their fear online in forums, laughing at those who don't share their "Wisdom and Experience" they stock up on ammo and food, they wall themselves off from the world. At first its not a physical isolation, but a mental one. They start taking stock of who's who, and who believes in what. They see enemies where before there were only variety and difference of opinion. Labels become by words for "I don't Like you." States of mind become rallying cries for hate and discrimination. It becomes acceptable to be a bigot and hypocrite.
We are all Hypocrites.
I am a hypocrite worse then some. So are you, we all are. We all see whats going on in the world. We see the degeneration of morality, civility, and basic goodness. This whole world is standing by while it tears itself apart, content to plead ignorance and innocence to mass murder. Only the things we're killing is ourselves, our souls, our hearts. We are allowing hope to be slaughtered wholesale while we swallow promises we know to be lies, in the name of change, and progress. We are all guilty of murder.
I whine and complain, I pretend disgust and frustration with a world I see to be out of control. I throw up my hands in anger and consternation at a nation full of liars, and hypocrites and I am the biggest one. It's easier though to point the finger at others. I point the finger at Obama, the Fed, The UN, The Forums, Communist plots, Capitalist Greed, The Boogeyman, Darth Vadar, and The Evil Empire. I shout my anger at the judge who sentenced me, the girl who spurned me, and the world that treats me so unfairly. I shake my fist at God, and dare him to show himself, and atone for his broken promises. I give the finger to Islam and their twisted fanaticism, I tell the Conservatives to bite me, and the Liberals to get a clue, and all in all the world can kiss my angry white ass.
It solves nothing. When I go to bed I am still mad and the world will still end one day. That's the point all this worrying this blaming this complaining bickering and lying is pointless. What if the world was going to end tomorrow, then what? Do we think we could stop it? Do we think we could pray it away? Would this information, this Revelation really change anything at all? Some of us might have a last minute change of heart, but only out of fear. The real issue is that you are who you are, not who you claim to be, but who you show yourself to be. The whole reality is for a lot of us we are jerks, hateful selfish people who have spent a lifetime being cruel. Now we're afraid. Staring at the loaded gun of fate we are peeing ourselves, asking the big what if.
Stop being a Hypocrite
We need to stop focusing on who we were and have been. We need to stop worrying about where we'll go and start spending a little more time looking at where we are. I don't care if you pray to God, Allah, Pac-man or the Sun, you are here. You are part of this world. I'm not saying screw it lets have fun and enjoy it while it lasts. I'm saying what you do everyday with the time you have left to you will echo on in the next life, whatever that may be. The world may end, and we may die, all the more reason to decide to do something today. It's time for all of us, you and me, hubbers, bloggers, mothers fathers, brothers and sisters, to do something. Liberal, Conservative, Christian, Muslim, Jew, and Atheist, all of you are still here and while you are how good this here is, is in your hands.
I'm not saying we should join hands around the campfire and sing. I'm saying its time to shut up, and just stop. Stop with the worrying, the whining, the nay-saying and criticism. We Americans have an interesting habit, in that we all seem to know what the problem is but have little interest in fixing it ourselves. I don't care what your political ideology is they all share the same affliction of someone else will fix it. Some want the government to do it, some want to be left alone and let every else do it. Some are just mad at the world because they've finally realized this horrible, unfair life has been their own doing.
My life, the unemployment, the desperation, the conviction, and loneliness are a tough break to be sure. It may not be fair, or right, or maybe I deserve what I have, but one way or the other there's no escaping the truth that my life right now is the culmination of years of bad choices and easy ways out. I tell you right now with all certainty where I am right now, could have been avoided. All of us could have steered our lives to a different course. Sometimes we were tired and wanted the easy way, sometimes we were in a rush, or unsure, or not aware off the options. However for most of us, where we are now is where we chose to be either through decision or lack there of.
Now we come to another choice, what will you do about it? If the world ends soon are you content with your life so far? Have you done enough, said enough, loved enough? Have you lived the life you wanted? If not isn't it about time? See the real question is not will the world end or when but has your life even begun? Let me clue you into a fact that you will never hear or see advertised. If the world ends tonight there is nothing you can do to stop it. You can't stop the earthquakes, the Asteroids, the fires, Tidal Waves, or even God. Once a nuclear War starts who started it won't matter. Who was wrong won't matter. Nothing will matter because you will be gone. What you don't know is even in the event of a limited nuclear strike by any nation the fall out and radiation would circle the world in a few hours.
Nothing Else Matters
Your political beliefs do not matter. None of this supposed intelligent conversation matters. All that does is that you have a life and need to start living it. There are so many scenarios we can not stop or avoid, but some we can, and we start by looking at ourselves and how we can make our lives better, and by extension the world around us. You want to change the world then convince everyone to become the best person they can and you will see worlds change overnight. You may feel you need to be informed, or that you're in the know, or that you've arrived and earned your spot in the line in heaven or even hell. All you're really doing with your waiting, philosophizing, and debating is wasting time, and wasting life, and that is all that really matters. You can not buy your way into Heaven, how you lived your life day to day will see you judged for what you did with it. While there is still time left, even one second I will live, I will keep trying to make the best of it. Instead of crying about how horrible it all is and praying for a God to come clean up my mess for me and make things better, I'm going to fight for a better future and life for my kids.I'm going to do something about it. All you others can sit and wait to die.

I finished my rough draft and have almost finished the rewrite and editing. I'm also taking part in this months National Novel Writing Month Contest. I also have classes beginning in two months and have started reviewing and studying some basics.
As far as my faith in humanity I have plenty of that, that's what gets me so frustrated, I'm tired of hearing about how bad things are from people that do little to help change it.
I try to be aware that all I actually have is the moment I am in. There was a past, there may be a future but there IS a now. If I do that, it helps me in particular to realize that I can't do anything about the world ending and stuff like that but I can do something about me and my little tiny area within it. I ended up in a place I really disliked and of course as you said- it was because of a bunch of choices and roadways I took and chose that got me in that ending position. I took stock of my circumstances did some soul searching and re-started out with that constant thought that what I have is RIGHT NOW and what I do matters even in small situations. I try to think correctly and then my actions follow. So, as I was reading your hub I see the pointlessness of being a bickering person and pointing fingers and trying to prevent the world from ending. I see that I need to live my life and make the best of it.
"Look to this Day for it is life, the very heart of life. In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence; The bliss of growth; The Glory of Action; The Splendor of beauty; For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow only a vision, But Today well lived makes yesterday a dream of happiness, and every Tomorrow a Vision of hope. Look Well, therefore to this Day."
I don't believe that this is the end of the world, but I do believe that ordinary people can effect change in the world around them. Our country is founded on that belief. I agree, get on with your life and move forward, but you can't stick your head in the sand because when you come up for air you may not recognize where you are. Very interesting Hub. Scott.
I think the world is always ending and beginning again, and I love your perspective. I think the best thing is to live each day as if it might be your last--but that's easy to say and hard to do. I fall short, but I do try. Great hub. (And good luck on that book!)
If you're not going to get consumed by anger and despair at the state of the world it helps to get a bit of historical perspective - at many junctures throughout history people have despaired for the future, or had cause to, and still found time to do things like have fun with your kids and do something constructive. Take for example the 1918 Flu pandemic that claimed up to 100 million lives - now that would be something to get you down. Our collective problems are neither unprecedented or particularly extreme compared to those of our forefathers.
I have no despair for the future but great hope, because I believe in doing something about it, not becoming so engrossed in my own limited troubles that I fail to see that in the whole scheme of things the world is in pretty good shape right now.
A great hub and very, very thought provoking. Thank you.
I truly enjoyed reading your hub Scott. There's so much truth in what you say and I'm glad your message is reaching so many readers. I do believe; however, that although we make choices in life that bring us to where we are today, nothing is wrong. It's just our own life's journey. When you become a celebrated author you'll know you've taken the perfect path. So with us all. We just need more hubs like this to get people directed onto that positive, "constructive" path. Well done!
Welcome to the world ! LOL
Enjoy,while you still can !
Thank you all for commenting. Not long ago I was involved with a ministry group, but left. It seemed the only thing they really wanted to discuss was the end of the world. I was more interested in improving it while we are still here. My concerns and opinions were not popular and I soon found myself being pushed from my position. Seems some people are content to sit around and wait for the end to come then to live the life they have.
Sitting around hoping and praying for the end to come meanwhile time is ticking and life is flying right by them!
There is much we can do to change the world for individuals in our sphere of influence. We can love them.
Indeed James, there is always something more we all could be doing. That's the real issue though so many are content just to sit and wait, feeling they have somehow bought their way in so to speak.
I like to enjoy every day as if the world was ending the next day. It might sound very selfish but that's the way I am.
There is no true way for us all to follow and this can be clearly seen by the things of the past. Humanity seems to fail in our attempt to realize that we are just a part of nature and like all other life forms, if we over-run our balance, there are repercussions for life on this Planet we inhabit. Far too many of us have adopted the "being the victim," psychosis of today which dis-empowers ourselves. Perhaps by developing our inner selves and becoming one with nature again when things do change we can survive as a species and improve spiritually. When our time is then up, we can accept it and move on.
Scott.Life - yours are the words of a warrior.
I am enjoying your hubs. Your perspective is clear and well thought out.
Good luck with everything!
I just found this, it is a great hub!
so great, keep the good job.
Hey Scott, I love your last paragraph!! Powerful!! While there is still time, keep trying to make things better. Make a difference and make every moment count. Great message!
Thanks, I am glad you liked it, I hope those who read it will take the words to heart and do something with life instead of wasting it in waiting.

"It is the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine!" You are pulling no punches my friend...very thought provoking!
Yes every one can be a Hypocrite at one time or another, and each day we wake up we need to look at our selves and see if we are acting on what we believe! Thank you for reminding me! Also I been wondering... how is the book coming along? I am working on my outline for "The Howling Heart" Do not loose faith in your self or the world, for there is always hope!
