Before and after

The benefits of being older than middle age made me think about a lot of things. One of them would be about the health and existence of men. True, men are the most intelligent beings on Earth. But how many of us ever thought that we are the sickliest among the animals?

When I was still a single-digit aged boy, I don't recall adults or my parents talking about too much on health concerns. Almost everybody smokes a cigar or cigarette. There were no alerts about food that could cause cancer or heart disease. Even grandparents then hardly complained of arthritis or joint pains. My grandmother then could play a Mahjong session after lunch until late in the evening without complaining of sore or back pains. Grandpa would just be seated besides her watching the game, smoking his tobacco, all those times!

It was when I reached my early thirties that I started really hearing more about complaints on health and diseases. By the way, I will be on my 54th birthday in a couple of months. So, when I was at that younger age that many health concerns have come up around the world. The most notorious ones are hypertension, cancer and aids. Since then, our intelligent scientists started developing cures and treatments on those diseases. As of now, I still have to learn if any of those treatments or preventions is really successful.

Dumber - Healthier?

Going back to the lesser intelligent animals on earth, is there anyone who is reading this right now, who knows of a disease or health concern of wild animals? Of course, don't consider the Bird Flu, Foot and Mouth Disease, Mad Cow Disease and some others that were brought on by men to domesticated animals. Some of those could have been accidentally transmitted to wild animals. On physical defects, has anyone heard about:

  • An Eagle, a hawk or any wild animal at that suffering from nearsightedness or farsightedness?
  • Any wild animal specie suffering from arthritis or scoliosis?
  • Wild animals that succumbed to hypertension, cancer or aids?
  • Animals in the wild that has epilepsy, autism, retardation, insanity (aside from rabies, of course), or with high incidence of abnormality?
  • And for curiosity's sake, any animal that has contracted venereal disease? There are only a few species that are faithful and loyal to one mate.

For the so many animals, domesticated or wild, I have never seen one yet complain constantly about a severe injury it has sustained. I have seen many animals that got injured, lamed or wounded but they would only cry of pain only for a few seconds. After that, no more complaints, whining or crying in pain. All what animals do is to rest to recover. Some even don't bother looking for food. What about human beings? As long as the pain is there complaints would last as much!

For all of that, I have arrived at the conclusion that human kind is the most physically inferior animal on earth. If not for their intelligence to find treatment and cure, the human race could have been wiped out from the surface of earth thousands of years ago. I like a sign I saw online that says, "Eat right and Exercise . . . Die anyway".
