It’s crazy how the world keeps sending out mixed messages. All through my school life- (I went to an all girls catholic convent school) I heard the nuns preach - love thy neighbour, sex is bad, don’t ever talk to boys, feel ashamed, always give to someone else. Sacrifice was really drilled into our heads, so it is no wonder we came out of there having learnt to feel guilty everytime we enjoyed ourselves or ate something without sharing it or got angry with the neighbours who were really rowdy and kept throwing garbage into our yards. We learnt it was really selfish to love ourselves. They taught us to ‘obey’ everyone else but ourselves, even if it meant giving up on your dreams – SACRIFICE you see? Their image of God was a really angry punishing God. Really mixed up I’d say, and we never really questioned their beliefs though we are now begining to question ours.

It is a wonder that despite all those views we had healthy views about boys and boyfriends. ( Nature rules.) The well meaning nuns really did not know where to draw the line, they could not identify that what they had chosen as a way of life is /was not everyone’s choice. They just did their jobs.  I still think that most convent schools are really outdated in their views and need to upgrade to current times. They never really taught us that if we didn’t love ourselves- no one else would. They never taught us self acceptance, our sense or worth was getting approval from external sources such as good grades and social service. They taught us money was bad, the root of evil and greed, and they kept sending out for charity and donations- UGH! ( Obviously we were not meant to be very successful in the material world.  It was a superhuman task overcoming those beliefs.)

I wonder what they’d say and how they’d react to the current scenario of people ‘coming out of the closet’. If they taught kids people of the opposite sex were bad, then is it that they should turn to people of the same sex? Is that the message they are giving the kids? But then not everyone ‘in the closet’ went to a convent school, so whats happening here?

I think the world is now coming to a point where people are realising that self love is the best love, that being different does not mean being bad. Marriage as an institution is undergoing a huge change, I wonder if it will soon be outdated. Marriage has changed beyond recognition. Gone are the days when the man was the head and the breadwinner and protector of his family and the woman was the caretaker, nurturer, and keeper of the home and hearth, gone are the days when women were meant to be kept in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

Now a days women are becoming braver and very recently I heard of two different instances where  two of my friends beat up men because their husbands had been abused. I was very amused. One of these ladies is a very petite lady about 5’3” tall, who is an instructor in a gym, and the man she beat up –who was pointed out to me later by another friend was a huge 6 foot well built male. I did not look into the reasons of the fight and physically I am sure the man would have been able to crush her if he so wished, but he took the blows she dished out quietly, he had after all beaten her husband the previous day over the way he was treating a stray dog.  Was it justified or not, was not the issue here, what I was looking at was that women are now able to fight for themselves and no longer really need a man to be their protector. Total role reversal!

What are the consequences of same sex marriage? How will the human race procreate if people are opting for same sex companions? Is method of procreation undergoing a change?
