It's pouring...HAIL!
65Hail
Hail: one of the many odd aspects of strong thunderstorms. Hail can be seen in supercells, anywhere from pea-sized to volleyball-sized! Picture hundreds of ice volleyballs falling from the sky; awesome! In this hub are some info on hail and some crazy pictures too! Enjoy.
What is Hail?
Hail is formations of ice balls that fall from the sky during a strong thunderstorm, or a supercell. Usually, hail will occur when a tornado warning is in place. Where there’s hail, there’s tornadoes. Like I said above, hail can be in small or great size.
The Formation of Hail
Hail forms in clouds as frozen water droplets mend together with dirt. The hailstone is constantly moving through the cloud forming more and more layers. This is how some hailstones get so large. After the hailstone gets to big to handle, it falls to earth.
The National Weather Service using a device called NEXRAD to detect hail and how big it is. Hail comes in different sizes, ranging from 0.25 in to 4.5 in! The biggest hailstone was recorded in Aurora, Nebraska. The hailstone was 18.8 inches around!
Just like there is a ‘Tornado Alley’, there is also a ‘Hail Alley’.
Great Pictures of Hail
Below are fabulous pictures taken from people ,even in their own back yard, of hail! Enjoy!
