NBA has never recovered after losing its best player ever
"If I can't practice, I can't practice. It is as simple as that. It ain't about that at all. It's easy to sum it up if you're just talking about practice. We're sitting here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we're talking about practice. I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game last it's my last but we're talking about practice man. How silly is that?
Now I know that I'm supposed to lead by example and all that but I'm not shoving that aside like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I honestly do but we're talking about practice. We're talking about practice man. (laughter from the media crowd) We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We're not talking about the game. We're talking about practice. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you've seen me play right, you've seen me give everything I've got, but we're talking about practice right now. (more laughter)
I think Iverson sums it all up in his statement May 8, 2002 (after the altercation with him and great coach Larry Brown). It was the beginning of the new NBA. Gone were the days of Jordan, Pippen, Rodman; players who were as sound fundamentally as they were playmakers. Players who knew you had to play both sides of the ball to win championships. Players who understood you had to practice, and practice hard to be able to execute the way they did on the court. Michael Jordan also had the utmost respect for his coach, and understood if he bought into Phil Jackson's philosophy, no other team on the court could outplay them. Now that has all been replaced by the Iverson's, the Kobe Bryant's, the Stephan Marbury's. These players are bigger than their coaches and teams. They don't need to practice, they already have multi-million dollar shoe deals. They probably haven't practiced hard since the 6th grade. And it shows, every year the jump shot comes one step closer to becoming extinct (and you would think it would improve with team defense also becoming extinct). In 100 years the NBA might have to change their scoring system to allow for a 3 point dunk since that 3 point line is just so far away. Why do you think we are terrible at Olympic basketball? Its embarrasing, the rest of the world plays team DEFENSE and PRACTICES their jump shot, and now we are getting beat at a sport WE INVENTED. This would be like our soccer team whipping Brazil, Germany and England every 2 years (World Cup or Olympics). But that won't ever happen because our best athletes want the big money and they don't want to have to practice.
I had some hope when I heard of Lebron James coming up in high school. He's definitely a great player, but not the same caliber as Michael Jordan was. I hate to say it but I doubt I will ever be able to watch another NBA in my life. After five minutes of running up and down the court playing one on one, no team defense, no fundamentals, and no class, I am ready to vomit. Thank God for the NCAA March Madness. With the NBA plucking the best college players as soon as they can get them (used to be right from high school, now they wait until after one year of college), you get some very crazy, exciting games. You actually have players playing as a team and actually relying on their jump shot. You actaully have coaches who are respected by their players, and you have kids playing for pride for themselves and their school.
But whenever I really want to be inspired, or maybe I feel like I can't accomplish a certain task, I put in my tape of the "Flu Game". This game defines everything that is great about Michael Jordan, and aslo defines what the new NBA lacks. I have attached a link to a very good article describing this game if you have never seen/heard of it.

Just reading the article again chills me. I urge anyone who has not seen this game to get a copy of this game or the series versus the Utah Jazz (back when they had Malone, Stockton, Hornacek). Just make sure not to watch this game, and then turn on a current NBA game afterwards, or you'll feel just as sick as Jordan did that game.

I agree with everything you said. Nothing beats preparation when attempting any task, great or small.
Alot of good points but also some errors. American's did not invent the game of basketball Dr. James Naismith a Canadian did. Also, Kobe Bryant should not be in any conversation involving Marbury. Kobe may have had his share of problems off the court but his work ethic is one of the best the NBA has ever seen. Yes the Americans have been doing horrible in international competition but I not consider them inferior players. They have just been taking international play too lightly in the past and need to learn to play as a team. Also, the gruelling NBA schedule doesn't allow the team to practice together like some of the international teams do. I am expecting some solid play this summer with Kobe, Lebron, and J Kidd leading the way.
NBA fans who have been folliwng the right race for MVP this year feel free to check this out and leave your own opinion.
http://hubpages.com/hub/NBA-MVP-race---breakin-it-Wow I was surprised to find out you are right about Naismith, A Canadian, inventing the game. Although it was invented in Masschusetts technically it looks like it is considered a Canadian game, I guess it depends how you look at it.
I agree with you that Kobe has a much superior work ethic than some of the others I named. But as a team player I feel he is lacking. If he and Shaq could have gotten a long a few more years I'm pretty sure they would have had at least one more championship.
I do hope you're right about this summer. I forget the last time I watched but it was ugly. Not one of our guys could hit a jump shot and I just tuned it out, it was embarrasing
I have lost all interest in the NBA over the past few years but I don't know if that's because the quality of the game has gone down or I just don't care about sports anymore.
Jonny-
I think quality is a very large reason. I can't think of any major sport where I didn't even know the playoffs started. I just found out a few days ago the NBS playoffs had started. I might tune in for the finals but very good chance I won't.
B Global-
Please say something at least alittle bit constructive. As much as I love Austrailia, its hard for me to allow a comment unless it makes some sense and isn't a little vulgar.
Hey jormins,
Great Hub man! You totally hit the nail on the head here. Jordan was my basketball hero when growing up, and not just 'cos of his dunking ability or any of the media hype, but 'cos he was a real inspiration.
To see a guy like that, far and away the best player ever, going out every night busting his tail on both ends of the floor and working harder than anyone else is what it's all about.
Not to mention the fact that he was really down to earth and had tremendous respect for others, not like these arrogant fools nowadays who only care about the $$$$ and the fame.
And yes, the Flu Game is possibly the greatest single performance in sports history not just basketball - I literally had a tear in my eye when I saw it the first time.
No fundamentals or heroes in today's game. Next time you watch a game take a look at how many travelling violations are committed that don't get called - it's ludicrous.
That's why the last few US international teams have had their asses whooped by the Europeans - they walk around like they own the show. Will be interesting to see what happens in this year's Olympics.
Great hub, thanks for making it!

Intersting read. When I saw the title, I thought it was going to be about how he's ruining the Bobcats.
With regards to your article, I think that, based on your writing and my own opinions, the problem isn't as much MJ as it is a general culture change within the NBA. That's why Stern is making dress codes and requiring kids to go to college, and they're trying to make it 2 years instead of one. The NBA is just a different game now.
Very true. Its sad how the international game has become more fundamentally sound than the NBA. We better do well these next Olympics, its embarrasing to see how far we have fallen when it comes to Olympic Basketball. Despite some of the different rules we really should dominate.
Dude, you can't mention Kobe in thisconversation at all. Kobe's work ethic is sick. Not trying to knock on MJ, but he wouldn't be able to handle Kobe's workout. There are players in the NBA that do put in hours and hours of work. Another player that comes to mind is Gilbert Arenas. That dude takes thousands of shots a day.
I can't really say who has or had a more strenuous work out but I know for a fact MJ was the consumate team player, something Kobe lacked quite badly back when I use to follow the NBA. Without Shaq I don't think Kobe would have any rings. I'm not saying Kobe is lazy and doesn't play hard but he definitely puts himself before the team and is not a leader like MJ used to be for the Bulls. Just ask Phil Jackson, he saw a big difference between MJ & Kobe. Phil's book wasn't very flattering of Kobe at all. Kobe is a great player but he very well represents the new age of NBA stars in the post-MJ era.
I agree that it seems there is a lack of passion in the NBA. You got guys, who are making tons of money, faking injuries, making trouble in the front office, and just whining all the time. Its all about making money now, and not the actual game.
He I like this convincing hub. Would you check out my profile and maybe become a fan
