It's recommended to use internal filter with any type of canister filter, as canister filters are difficult to clean and clog easily. They do not clean enough for larger aquariums. The internal filters use a magnet drive submersible powerhead, and also have air injectors and attachable filter baskets to increase air in the water. They filter the water by removing the food debris and larger particles which usually tend to clog the canister filters, thus you really only have to clean the canisters about every half a year, the internal filters you should clean often.
