Jessica Watson - 16 year old solo sailor to circumnavigate the globe

Those of you who read my hubs will know that I have an interest in young sailors. This started when, at the age of 11 or 12, I read 'Dove' - Robin Lee Graham's account of his single handed circumnavigation of the globe which he began at the age of 16. This brave story fascinated me, especially as his voyage was undertaken at a time when communication and navigation devices were a lot less sophisticated than they are today. I have also been following the story of Dutch girl, Laura Dekker, who although only 13 years old is determined to become the youngest sailor to sail around the world solo. The Dutch courts have stopped her plan for now.

So it was with great interest that I watched young Australian, Jessica Watson, who is 16 set sail out of Sydney harbour on October 18th. She will attempt to become the youngest person to single handedly sail around the world unassisted - and non stop. In August this year British sailor, 17 year old Mike Perham, became the youngest person to sail solo around the globe. But as he had to stop for repairs to his boat, his trip did not count as unassisted. The record for the youngest unassisted circumnavigation is currently held by Australian Jesse Martin, who completed his trip at the age of 18 in 1999.

Jessica plans to spend 8 months completing her circumnavigation on her 10 meter boat, "Ella's Pink Lady". The journey is 28 000 nautical miles through some of the most dangerous seas. As of yesterday she had covered just over 1000 nautical miles and is slightly ahead of schedule.

Her departure was not without some controversy. In September, on a practice run, her yacht collided with a 63 000 tonne Chinese cargo ship. Jessica was luckily unscathed although her boat sustained some damage. This prompted some of Australia's most experienced sailors to urge her not to go ahead. She felt that she had learned from this experience however and plans went ahead for her voyage.

One of the interesting things about this solo circumnavigation is that the world can closely follow Jessica's progress. She is writing a blog and has even included video commentary so one can watch her as she journeys. She is in daily contact with her parents by radio and email. She receives hundreds of comments on her blog from well wishers and other interested parties. This is a very different scenario from the one that faced Robin Lee Graham where he would be alone and out of contact with the world for weeks on end. It would certainly seem that some of the loneliness is taken out of the voyage for Jessica. Just reading all the comments on her blog must occupy quite a few of her hours. I have included a link below.

Also included below is an interview with Jessica. She seems like a very mature 16 year old and is certainly focussed. The interviewer also talks to her mother. She is a lucky girl to have the support of her parents in pursuing her dream as it can't have been easy for them to decide to let her go on such a potentially dangerous journey.

There is no doubt that Jessica is an experienced sailor.  She has been sailing since she was nine years old and it may be that the psychological stress of being alone for eight months will be reduced with the modern communication methods available to her.  Nevertheless, as I pointed out in my hub on Robin Lee Graham, more people have been into space than have single handedly circumnavigated the globe.  This will be no walk in the park for Jessica.  Join me as I watch her progress.

Other Solo Circumnavigators of Interest

  • Joshua Slocum is the first documented sailor to circumnavigate the globe between 1895 and 1898.  His book "Sailing alone around the world" is still considered to be a classic adventure.
  • Francis Chichester was the first sailor to go for speed when he undertook his solo circumnavigation in 1966.
  • Robin Lee Graham was the youngest sailor to complete a solo circumnavigation.  He was 16 when he set off but the voyage took him five years.
  • Alec Rose was a British grocer turned yachtsman.  He sailed around the world in 1967 to 1968.  His story is told in the book "My Lively Lady".
  • Chay Blythe completed a solo circumnavigation - going west - in 1971.
  • The Polish sailor Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe (with stops) in 1978.  She was closely followed by Naomi James a couple of months later.
  • Kay Cottee was the first woman to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation in 1988.

What an adventure...

I have read about Laura Dekker`s case and I can imagine how frustrating it can be.

Thanks Lyn and funride for your comments. You are right it is a wonderful thing to see such focus and determination in one so young. I certainly wouldn't have been up to such a feat at that age. I love the fact that we can follow her voyage so closely. The problem with the Laura Dekker case is that an age limit must be drawn somewhere.....

Very interesting; I was not aware of this talented sailor. I wish her the best and I'm going to check out the blog. As a mom I just can't even imagine how I will even let my kids walk to school by themselves someday, let alone do something like this!

You know, if she were my daughter, I probably wouldn't be able to sleep at night. I guess you first really have to have the right set of parents or be an orphan with lots of sponsorship not to mention filthy rich if none of these things. Wow. I wish her the best of luck. Thanks, Catherine.

I wish her best of luck, too, and have a feeling she'll make it just fine. She seems an extremely level-headed young woman. However, the sea is a strange beast and can surprise us...

I read a story about three fishermen, who in the late 1800's sailed around the world, or rather ROWED around the world, in a ROWBOAT! If they could do it in a rowboat, with only very primitive equipment, I think Jessica will be ok.

We have come a long way from Fernando Magellan and Sir Francis Drake.

If I were her Dad, I'd say "Go for it!"

When she is old, she will have all that to look back on.

Thank you guys for visiting my hub. It is great to see this determined young woman go for her dream. If I were her parent I wouldn't be sleeping at night either dohn! But good for them that they have made it possible for her.

I'm amazed at this story, I just don't want my daughter to see it! I like your passion for your subject Catherine!

No, Ben - don't let your daughter see it! Especially if she is into sailing. Those seas are dangerous. I suppose that for the parents it is one of those situations where they probably would rather she didn't go but on the other hand they must want to have a passionate, brave, feisty daughter who is prepared to live life to the full. Rather them than me.

travelespresso - thanks for your positive comment. She does rock indeed!

I have a 17 year old and I worry when she drives on ice and snow. I can't imagine how challenging it is for her parents, as she takes on this amazing task. I appreciate you sharing this news with us. I will check out her blog, thanks! I didn't know that fewer people had circumnavigated the world than have been launched into outer space. This puts it into perspective!

You gotta love the water and have a determination that is truly driven to do this. As a parent, I would say no way are you doing this alone. As a determined person, I say 'Good for you'. As a believer of prayer, my prayers will go out for her safe return and an experience that will last a lifetime.

This little girl in my arms had over 3,000 sailing miles under her belt before she could walk. At 5 she's already grabbing the wheel and pushing me away!

Good morning, Catherine R. I'm from Samar- a Samareno- a Filipino from the Philippine Islands (Philippines). I love your hub because I love stories of courage and gallantry, such as those undertaken by world-calibre sailors like Robin Lee Graham, Laura Dekker, Jessica Watson, Mike Perham, Jesse Martin, Joshua Slocum, Francis Chichester, Alec Rose, Chay Blythe, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, Naomi James and Kay Cotee. It would be much appreciated if you could publish a picture-hub of the aforementioned brave sailors detailing in it their main accomplishment as well as an update of their present whereabouts. (What are they doing?, marital status, etc.) Do visit one of my hubs, will you?

I was greatly delighted to have received your reply this 7:30 AM of Sunday- Nov. 15. Can I be one of your fans? One of my hobbies is watching great boxing matches on TV thus I cordially invite you and your family to watch FIREPOWER Pacquiao vs. Cotto. Pacquiao is a Filipino like me.
