Some people choose to get a tattoo of Jesus. They have a great connotation, especially for the person who wears them. The reasons are varied and often deeply personal, but common amongst them all is a willingness to have such a reminder of their relationship with Jesus Christ.

This style of tattoo looks best in the traditional monochrome style. Most examples and flash you find will be like that. Don't worry about not having enough detail by only using one color. The symbolism of these tattoos will still shine through.

If you're not ready to get a full-figured tattoo, consider getting either a stylized cross, a Jesus fish tattoo, or a sacred heart tattoo. These can also act as representation of Jesus' divine love for humanity.

Specifically for sacred heart tattoos, a good way to get it inked in the "New School" style - bright colors, bold lines, and large. Cross tattoos or fish tattoos can look good either black or color.

Eternal Love and Eternal Art

A tattoo of Jesus' face can be a symbol of his eternal love. It's also a reminder that even if you are alone Jesus is with you. Very few tattoo designs can have such a comforting effect on the wearer.

Picturing The Passion

For others, picturing Jesus on the cross can be an intense image. It's not something to undertake lightly. Choosing to tattoo Christ as he suffered for us can keep you focused on what really matters. Because of the powerful meaning those who have this design inked cherish it.

The Best Placement

Because of the religious connotations, some people wonder where it's appropriate to place this tattoo.

In general this type of tattoo works best on the back, arm, or chest. There you have enough space to allow a grand image. If you're interested in allowing maximum public visibility, your calf is a good place.

For the sacred heart, a good place to get this tattooed is on your chest.

Like any tattoo though, go with what feels comfortable to you.

What Does the Bible say About Tattoos? Is it Okay?

There's much confusion on this topic because of Leviticus 19:28: "Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord."

Some people claim this prohibits tattoos. Taken in context though, this verse is actually about God not letting the Israelites fall into tribal religious rituals.

What you should consider is the part of Romans 14:23: "...everything that does not come from faith is sin."

Read it like this: Is getting a Jesus tattoo the right decision for you? What are your motives for wanting this? Is this decision being entered into for pure reasons, or is there something else behind it? Will you still want this later on?

I am of the belief of 1 Corinthians 6:20.: "Honor God with your body." but in the end only you can answer that question for yourself. Jesus tattoos are so personal you'll need to really think about it.

The large Mary full back piece has great vibrant color and the little cherub is a nice addition to the theme. I also really like the two wrist tatoos of the cross that look very ethnic and orginal.

Tatoo Sally, this was a timely and well done hub! I was just talking w/ my girlfriend - who is the associate Pastors wife - about tatoos and piercings...she wants her nose pierced and I've had a tatoo design I've wanted for years. The points you make regarding reasons and being sure of a decision are excellent and I appreciate the scriptures you reference and the insight you contribute in relation to them!

Thanks and blessings to you!

I have a lot of tattoos and if I had it to do over again I wouldn't do it. It's just another carnal desire, the more you get, the more you want. I compare getting a tattoo to masturbating or beating your head against the wall, there's no point to it.

The Bible states specifically not to mark our bodies and it wasn't only referring to the sign of the beast. Tatoos are sin no matter how you look at it. Although, I have some, I didn't care much about God back then. Some may say, well, If Jesus is our tatoo, why is that wrong? The tatoo was made by sinful man and who says that Jesus even looks like those pictures!? Isn't it good enough that Jesus is in our hearts instead of having some strange face tatooed on us? Does anyone honestly think that the pictures of Jesus actually look anything like him? We can have a tatoo of Jesus and still rot in hell after-all. I am not putting anyone down for getting a tatoo of the cross or Jesus for that matter. I am simply throwing thoughts out there for others to think about.
