Looking Back to 2001

The Buckeye faithful were undoubtedly exasperated to get rid of John Cooper after the 2000 loss to an unranked South Carolina. They conducted a nation-wide search for a football coach and found their candidate coaching within the state of Ohio;Jim Tressel.

The faithful Buckeye fans, that were fed up with losing big games and embarrassing bowl games --not too mention the domination from the team up North --wanted some relief and why not go with the legend from up the road. The calm cool and collective Jim Tressel already had 4 NCAA Div. II titles. He seemed like a logical choice. With so much success going on within the state (other than Ohio State) Youngstown State had 4 National Titles, and Mount Union is still rolling posting these impressive accolades:National Championships: 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008. The fans were excited to get a winner, and a winner we had. Tressel answered his promises and not only did he begin his domination of Michigan, but he won a National Title with the very talented Cooper-recruited upperclassman, and with a very highly touted Freshman named Maurice Clarrett --recruited by Tressel --within two years the Messiah was at the helm of the OSU football team. He could do no wrong until now.

The embarrassing National Championship games versus Florida, and LSU have left the fans crawling underneath the masses of National scrutiny, breathless with no relief in sight. Two last minute drives by Texas and USC in 2009 seemed to have deflated the myth of conservative Tressel-Ball to win big games, and the fans are left speechless without even an arguement to defend ourselves against the national media --especially Mark May of ESPN.

Now we have to look to our hindsight. In the same year that Tressel was hired to coach OSU there was a candidate that also had had two years of grad-assistant experience at Ohio State:Urban Meyer.

In 2001 Urban Meyer took over the program at Bowling Green University. He used his talents to nearly upset the team that should have hired him in 2001, to have and undefeated season at the University of Utah, and since has won two National Titles with the University of Florida. Since the hiring of the two Ohio coaches Meyer has two National titles compared to Tressel's one (which was done with Cooper's talent). In hindsight it seems as if Ohio State officials failed to realize the up and coming coaches potential or maybe even more realistic were unwilling to take a risk on a young but successful coach.

So we missed Urban Meyer, the fans, the administration, everyone discounted him and Urban obviously took it out on us in the 2007 Championship game, but noe just down the road lives another coach who may just have the best team in Ohio.

Brian Kelly has done more with less than any coach we may know. In a stadium the size of a fish bowl Brian Kelly has taken his team to a Big East Championship and a BCS bowl birth and his contract is up for grabs!Tressel has become predictable to the point that other coaches may now do to him as he once did to them...hold the ball for the last 6-7 minutes and make a 1 1/2 minute stand to 2 minute stand. Tressel ball deflated.

Tressel has become conservative too much for even his own good. Remember the call against Purdue that propelled Ohio State to the Chamionship game versus Purdue. Going deep on a predictable call. One thing about being conservative is that if you decide to go for a long shot...no one expects it..now, even by Tressel standards, we have become predictable to the point that everyone knows what will happen...Ohio State will lose on a last minute drive or 4th and 1 we will run up the middle, not throw the route to Jenkins and win the game.

Tressel is un-imaginative, his conservativness negates his talent, and he has lost he ability to take a risk.

Brian Kelly with this team, and switch coaches and uniforms, is the number 2 ranked team in the country, he would run the most dynamic offense known to college footaball, and we would be excited fans awaiting another National Title.

Now our conservative coach will cost us another title chance and we will watch the second best coach from Ohio beat the best coach from Ohio for a National Title from two schools not from Ohio and I hope we all wonder how they both got out of the state!
