Poor job hunters! The stress of trying to find a job in this poor economy that matches our skills and salary requirements is hard enough. But unsuspecting job hunters now have another battle to contend with - JOB SCAMS and FAKE JOB OFFERS! No - they may not all be looking to rob us of our money but they are certainly robbing us of one commodity that can't be replaced - TIME!

Scam job offers are all over the Internet as creative web scammers are finding a way into our lives. Craig's List scammers are especially prevalent because the job posts and listings are free. You probably get the money scam spam emails that say "Make Money on Craig's List"! Well the money they are making is most likely at our expense. Millions of people every day are searching job posts online trying to find the perfect job. Everyone would, ideally, like to work at home and make lots of money or work for a company that allows telecommuting. Interestingly, these perfect job offers are all over Craig's List!

If you go on Craig's List looking for a job - be forwarned! There are many posts that aren't jobs at all - simply evil ways for people to make affiliate money, to get you to sign up for their service or a money scam that gets you to accept fake bank deposits. The fake job posts are everywhere, in every city, for all job types - especially looming in the part-time job category. Craig's List is a free post system so it is a big attraction to scam artists from across the country. I tested a few of the postings to see if they were legitimate. To my dismay - very few were real job listings. It is a shame because the few real job post ads have to be entaggled with all of the bogus crap jobs.

20 Sure Signs that a Job Post could be one of the Craig's List Job Scams

  1. It has a generic, over-used or vague job title. Admin Assistant or Customer Service Rep are popular ones.
  2. The jobs that indicate that "Telecommuting is Ok". This attracts many people and gives them more responses.
  3. They fail to list a specific location for the job - i.e. they list no location under the city or area that you are searching.
  4. They list a salary or hourly wage that seems too good to be true or too specific like $13.64 - 34.23 / hour. What the...?
  5. They list it as a government job.
  6. They post a job with a title that doesn't match the description.
  7. They use strange sentences or misspellings.
  8. A search for that job title in Google - example "Admin Assistant Craig's List" and comes up in many other cities with the exact same job post. Because Craig's List is free - they can easily post the same bogus job post in every city.
  9. If the description has a bunch of exclamation points and promises high income in one week.
  10. If the description boldly states "No Experience Necessary" but has a promise of high pay.
  11. There is no job contact information. A quality job post will tell you who to email or give you a valid company website.
  12. A link that is to a home business or multi level marketing opportunity website. This isn't a JOB - but a business venture. If you were looking for a home business opportunity you would have searched that category.
  13. A link that redirects you to another site.
  14. A link that takes you to a job membership site and asks you to register.
  15. A quick response to your email inquiry that tells you they have reviewed your resume when you didn't even send it.
  16. A quick response to your email inquiry that leads you to another website that promises you more job openings - like government jobs. Click after click - nothing but a time waster...
  17. A response to your email inquiry that asks you to sign up for a web-conferencing service so you can be part of a training call.
  18. A response to your email inquiry with a name and company that does not exist.
  19. A response to your email inquiry from someone in a foreign country looking to hire people in the United States to handle accounts payable or receivables.
  20. The same auto response to all of your emails. There isn't a real person at the other end of the email account.

Tips on How to Avoid Being Scammed by one of the Fake Job Offers

If you suspect that a job post is bogus - follow some of these guidelines to avoid spending much of your precious time and energy.

  1. Send a generic inquiry first. Do not send your resume right away. Do not waste your time on a cover letter and reformatting your resume for a scam. Tell them you are interested in the job but would like to know more about the company and the location. Be sure to ask who you should direct the resume to.
  2. Search for that job title in Google - example "Admin Assistant Craig's List" and see if it comes up in other cities with the exact same job post.
  3. If they reply to your email. Check the name, company and website. Always check to make sure the company is a real company before you continue to waste time pursuing the job offer. Do a Google search on the company name or contact name to see if they exist or if there are any complaints written by others about this job offer.
  4. Check the website address they give you. Does the website seem legitimate or does it just redirect you to another site? If the link is something like "sitename.com/submityouresume.asp". Check the main website by taking off the "submityourresume.asp" and search the "sitename.com" to see what the website is really about. If it is bogus it will have nothing to do with the job offer or the company.
  5. Never pay money for anything. Never give your credit card or bank account info. Never open a bank account for a foreign company!

How are the Craig's List Scammers Making Money?

I figured out a few but I am sure there are many, many more!

  1. When they send you to site that asks you for a membership the site they send you to is usually a job listing site that promises you more job listings if you subscribe. When you subscribe the sender will make affiliate money or get free traffic to their website.
  2. A bogus Government Job site that is all Google Adsense ads or affiliate links that takes you nowhere and finds you no job! They make money every time you click in frustration. They also make money if you click an affiliate link and sign up or subscribe to a service.
  3. A creative person came up with idea of having their job candidates sign up for a web training call using a web-conferencing services that pays for every person who signs up. This person will get paid if you follow her instructions to sign up for the web call. In the case that I found they get $3 for every person that signs up for a 14 day trial and another dollar amount if they actually sign up. This "company" then delays the call so you are forced to hang on to the service and pay for it - allowing them to make more money from you.
  4. Foreign countries looking for Assistants in the United States that are honest! They promise you the moon and the stars but really just want you to open a bank account - collect checks (that will eventually bounce) and make payments. You make the payments thinking the money is really there and then the check bounces. Because it is overseas you are stuck and liable for the money!!
  5. This isn't so much a scam but is misleading and happens even in newspapers - a great job position is advertised but it may not really exist. It actually hooks you up with a headhunter who will offer you lower paying jobs down-playing your experience or credentials.
  6. Postal Service Jobs post with promises of high pay. The problem is you have to buy the test and course materials to be able to apply for these jobs. This is from a company not affiliated with the U.S. Post Office. They do tell you that but are quick to take your money for something that is actually free.
  7. Very scary - although I never ran into this - if you think you have a legitimate job and supply them with a W-4 that has your personal information including your social security number. Could a job scam post lead to identity theft? Probably... so beware!

My Review:

This person is using a real company website but if you look or investigate further you find the person does not exist and the company web site makes no mention of job offers like this. Other than that it is simply too good to be true. Excellent pay and free family vacations! The irony is they want HONEST people! Ha! This is probably a bank account scam.

My Review:

1. This company does not exist.

2. There are other people talking on the web about whether this offer is real.

3. The test files that she attached to the email are ridiculous. Very simple and the most bogus test you can imagine. A moron could complete it. No real company would have such a simple test.

4. The link in the email is a redirected affiliate link that tells you she makes money from the referral in some way. In this case she gets $3 if I sign up for the free trial and more after the 14 day trial period if I pay for a month's subscription.

5. The parent link to this website has nothing to do with security.

TOTALLY BOGUS!!

Is this a scam job too?

It's posted under Craigslist. After receiving a call from Myriam, I found out that she is calling from a cell phone and not a company phone. I would have to make cold calls to people who supposedly need financial help. Then the attorneys would handle calling their credit card companies and lowering their debt and helping out their credit scores. She didn't tell me if there is base pay. I don't know the company's name, I didn't ask either... She asked me to come in for an interview at their office.

I'm thinking this is a job where we would have to telemarket and eventually scam others of their money. I could be wrong...but I feel hesitant about this job...

Here is the listing, they are still hiring, so maybe someone else could apply and look further in to this. Training is on Thursday.

Mary,

I don't think it is a scam like the others on this page.

There is a lot of money "helping" people of debt. I believe they charge a hefty fee but really are able to negotiate with Credit Card companies/etc. to reduce their fees. Someone once explained to me that the CC companies, etc. generally won't talk to the person holding the debt but will talk to a 3rd party on their behalf. So this company provides this service and then integrates their fees in with their new negotiated monthly payment.

Sounds to me like you would get paid when you secure them a new client. If you feel hesitant call and ask for the salary and company information. I am sure they are ramping up given the hard times many people are facing now.

Good luck!

I had an interview with someone from craigslist for a receptionist for a real estate company. I only talked to them through email and when I got to the lot it was the only suite without a name on their door. When someone let me in through me buzzing on the intercom there was a maze that did not lead to anything. The place was painted all black and past the maze I could see photography lights and there was very unprofessional music playing. I was so afraid the door locked behind me after I looked around, but it didn't and I left very quickly. When walking to my car a guy who told me he owned another suite asked if I needed help finding something and when I told him of the name of the company he said he had never heard of it. People should be really careful with jobs posted on craigslist.

I am just wondering why Craigslist isn't doing anything about this or trying to come up with a solution? These scam artists are giving the impression that they have real jobs. Then you inquire only to get some automated response to go to another website or to give them your credit report. The job section at Craigslist is ovverrun with scam artists and very few legit employers. I have noticed that alot of the responses I get are from "Gmail" accounts and not actual company names. People are having a hard enough time as it is trying to find work.

Exactly like the post above, I too received an email from TBQ Consulting that asked me to obtain my credit report from their preferred source (which is an affiliate product) and send it to the HR department's email address. The job listing was for an Investment Consultant position.... First of all, the www.tbqconsulting.com website is cheesy looking, and none of the links work; they all take you to the same home/index page. I checked the domain registration on Whois.com and the website is registered to Domains by Proxy, Inc,, a company that secures your personal information from the domain registration process. I've not looked into website registration too much, but I've never seen a company "mask" or secure their domain registration - why would they need to? Aside from the website, the phone number was bogus and I'm not going to waste anymore time with this. I hope someone reads this and saves themselves the trouble I did... every second counts, so stay away from this type of crap!! Be very careful on Craigslist....

I inquired about a job on craigslist and I got a response from a man saying he owns his own business and he needs an at home personal assistant. I will be printing out his clients checks and sending the checks to them. (postage paid by the man) He told me that I would have to purchase the Versa Checks and Ink 2008 package from like wal mart or office depot. It's like $40. I would be paid monthly, $1500. He told me that I would get paid through Western Union. I e mailed him several times and told him that if this is a scam, that I would report him..etc. He has e mailed me numerous times and assured me that this isn't a scam. He has yahoo messenger also and I have only chatted with him recently for a few minutes. I told him I want more information about his company before I jump into anything. He told me he is hearing impaired. I am not really sure about this one. I mean, he hasn't asked me for any kind of personal info, credit card info or anything like that...so I guess I will see.

Johnelle I recently was emailed by someone by the name of Frank Culler for a personal assistant job that was posted on craigslist and he said,

"Hello, Thanks for applying for the post, I quite I appreciate it? I received and read your e-mail and it's reasonable and acceptable. So I will give this a go" I'm looking for someone that can be trusted and reliable to work very well and good understanding person. This position is home-based and flexible, working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. As my assistant, your activities amongst other things will include; *Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring. Scheduling programmes, flights and keeping me up to date with them. Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I briefly looked over your background andyou would be a great fit for the position. You do not need to file a formalapplication, as we automate applications from your resume. The next step isa brief credit history (necessary for equal opportunity and Sarbanes-Oxleycompliance).To do this:1)Go to our website: www.jobcrafters.info2)Click on 'Credit Report'3)Click on the link to go to our third-party credit supplier. Keep in mind, this report will not be seen by anyone outside of the HR department and willin no way influence the hiring decision. Also, if you could let me know your availability I will schedule a brief(30-minute) first interview, so I can tell you more about the job and findout if you have any preliminary questions. Thanks,

Barf!

I recently was disgusted with a job ad for a position writing reviews online. Curious and skeptical I inquired. Sure enough they wanted you to go to what looked like an affiliate website and write reviews. They claimed that they would then evaluate each of them and let us know if we were hired for the position. Basically - a way to waste our time when there is no job and a way for scum bags to make a buck. REALLY - doesn't anyone care anymore how they make money?

I checked out the www.qualityreviewers.com website and was trying to figure out if it was legitimate.  Usually the links on Craig's List are affiliate links.  This one is not.  But I think this is just a site that takes your information and sends you offers available to the general public that promise ipods and computers if you take advantage of advertisers offers - like a mortgage quote or a magazine trial offer or a book club.  This company would then make money because they sent you to the website offers.  This is not a job or a credible mystery shopping company.  I found the following Answer to a question about whether Quality Reviewers are legit on Yahoo Answers: ==========================================================

I own a mystery shopping company, and have been in the industry for 10 years. I read through their agreement pretty closely, and looked at their content page. They state that they are members of our trade organization, The Mystery Shopping Providers Association (link below). I have been a member of the MSPA for 7 years, and have never heard of this company. Further, this company is not a member and is not listed in their database. Mystery shopping is legitimate. If you don't know how this company got your information, it is 99% likely that this is a scam. Real shopping companies have a process that you must go through: 1. Apply to work for a company 2. Company does not charge you to sign up 3. When shops are available in your area, you will be notified via email with the locations, and pay/ reimbursement by location. 4. You can view the shops, and choose to apply for a shop or not. 5. If you apply, you usually have to wait to find out if you have been selected. The shopping company will select you based on your individual application for each individual shop. 6. If you are selected for an assignment, you will receive notification via email. You then may login to the database and view the shop, read the instructions, etc. 7. Most companies pay via paypal, and they pay within 30-60 days of completion. What to avoid: No REAL company will attempt to send you offers from their sponsors, either, as this company claims they will. It helps if the company is BBB certified The company will have a phone number on their website The website will look legitimate The website WONT show dozens of people happily showing off their new ipod The website won't promise hundreds or thousands of dollars a month or day The website won't promise cruises, trips, etc. The company won't send you a check in the mail to wire transfer money under the auspices of conducting a mystery shop for Western Union, etc. I have enclosed a few links below, including a link to our trade organization, and an independent resource for finding legitimate shopping companies. In short, run as fast as you can away from this site. Do NOT give them any information. If you receive any checks from them, report them to the FBI and Federal Trade Commission immediately. I hope this helps. I know there is a lot here. However, I have seen people taken advantage of repeatedly, Regards, Kimberly Nasief-Westergren President Measure Consumer Perspectives Source(s): http://www.mysteryshop.org http://www.volition.com/mystery.html http://www.measurecp.com http://www.ftc.gov http://www.fbi.gov

Gosh! I would hope you are safe. I can't tell you how many resumes of mine are out there with my name, address, phone, education and work history. I also have a fraud alert out but not for that reason.

Keep in mind that the fraud alert will stop you from being able to get instant credit. So you can't apply for those store credit card offers and get an instant % off.

I have yet to have any real threat to my information that I know of...except credit cards but that is whole other matter...

I think you are fine!

I am in the same situation as the rest of you. I would have to say at least 25 percent of the job postings on craigslist is bogus. I checked them all out and flagged them. I think there should be a better set of protocols that craigslist would develop to allow these postings. I have emailed craigslist abouts these ads, and it is not just jobs, it is apartments and houses for rent .

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your intent on our job offer and we have read your resume and you have qualified for the job at hand. As part of the protocols of our growing company, we have deployed measures to ensure that the company is safe from any liabilities and problems from our employees, which includes getting your credit score checked.

In lieu to that, we have arranged a special free service for our applicants to get their credit checked with the following company:

Free Credit Check Here

Once you have your credit check in place please send me an email confirmation as soon as possible and inform me about your credit score standing and then we will confirm your interview schedule. This one sounds more like a BS job to get you to click on an affiliate link and order a credit report. If you read carefully she only wants your credit score (which normally is not free) and the email confirmation that you ordered the report. She doesn't care about the report only that you click on the link and order the report than pay a small fee to get your credit score SO SHE CAN GET PAID as an affiliate.

These people are scum of the earth and should be reported to the affiliate companies that are paying them.

Seriously - find a legitimate way to make money like the rest of us! Add value to the world and live a meaningful life.

Enough said...

BTW I just sold a stove and freezer on CL so it is not all bad.

Yikes! This is one of those money scams where they send money to your account and tell you to keep 10% for your troubles. Months later your troubles begin when their check bounces and you are left holding the bag b/c the funds are from out of the country and the bank holds you responsible. They end up with the money and you owe the bank for the bounced check!

They do this with online stores as well... asking to direct deposit to your checking account. I talked to the bank and they told me NEVER to allow them access to your bank account regardless if it is a new account with no money in it. If the deposit is bad they won't know for months. When the "check" bounces you are now responsible for giving the money back to the bank. The crooks run off with the goods from the sale and you are left with no payment just bank fees.

RUN don't walk from anyone who promises money to your account from out of the country. Sure, you get to keep the 10% only to get ripped off of the other 90%!

You are better off not having a job then getting robbed by these crooks!

I got the same email that Erik posted and I got it from two different personal assistant job postings. I didn't get the second email until the next day which assured me it was a scam.

But at first when I read the email it seemed somewhat legit. They woman offered to pay for all up front expenses, said I could open the packages etc just as mentioned in the email. So, all seemed somewhat legit...they didn't want to know my bank account info or ss#. At first glance, I'm like wow...this sounds great I can make easy cash...stil a little hesitant. I became suspicious because at the bottom of the email she wanted to know my sex and age. I'm thinking to myself why do you need to know that???

So, I emailed her back asking additional questions and I have yet to receive a response. Like I mentioned earlier, I received an almost an identical email from a job poster 14 hours later and this guy even included a phone nuumber, but of course the number is for the UK. After reading the second email I was knew it was a scam and then reading the same email Erik posted 10 days ago assured me even more. I am so glad websites like this are available so people can do some research before emailing their info to everyone under the sun.

I wonder though how this scam actually works...how do these people make their money??? Maybe for every dumb idiot that responds to the email with their personal info they submit it and get paid for every submission?? I wonder if they actually send a check? I mean if they did I would take it to my local currency exchange and cash it right then and there. If it was a fake, then Oh well. I wonder, if once you send your info they send a check and start sending their items to you ie computer, electronics and if you dont send them off like you're suppose to you can get busted?? Anyone else have any thoughts?

I certainly wish something could be done about this. I am glad that I know these postings are bogus so I don't waste my time searching for jobs like that on Craigslist.

You would think that if you got a check and cashed it you would be free and clear - escaping with the money but you are incorrect! Apparently if the check bounces (which it will) - you will find out months later and be held responsible for the funds plus check bouncing fees. Can you see the ugly picture now? I don't think this has anything to do with them giving out your personal information. They just want free goods and write bad checks leaving you stuck owing money. Be careful!

ahhh crap. I got the same thing as Erik. But the bad thing is, I actually gave him my name and personal address, along with my cellphone.

The guy that sent me my email said he will mail me a check for the first week's payment.

Should I just not deposit the check at all? and What will happen now that they got my info?

Louis,

Definitely don't deposit the check!!! I wouldn't worry about the personal info... it was probably just so he can contact you. Do you have his info? I would report it to the police and give them the check if you get it.

Good luck but don't fret b/c you didn't deposit the check = )

I'm scared. I applied to a bunch of jobs on craigslist. I'm a recent graduate and I didn't even think of scams or someone trying to rip me off. I'm an idiot. There are a ton of my resumes out there now with my address/phone number. I got responses back from multi level marketing companies, which are SCAMS like Sapphire Skies Promotions. They have ads on all the job boards.

talkabout profile image

talkabout  says:

Cheshire,

You are not an idiot! You can still post for jobs on Craig's List - just be aware of what sounds like a scam and what doesn't. How do you think I discovered all of the scams? By applying for them myself!! Nothing bad happened to me just b/c they have my address and telephone #. They are not that good! They want you to get involved by giving them your banking info ...by sending you bad checks... and some just want you to click on their affiliate links so they make money and you waste your time exploring jobs that don't exist.

Still search for and apply for jobs as you would do normally but keep a watchful eye out for those that look like they might be scams or have other intentions. If you mistakenly apply for one - you just wasted your time. If you get an immediate reply or something that seems off - do some research. See if it a real company and if they want a credit check or you to spend money or you to cash checks... do not proceed.

Good luck with your job search! There are plenty of legitimate businesses that utilize Craig's List to post jobs - you just have to weed through the other garbage to find them!

99% of internet scams are easily spotted if you know what to look for. Essentially it involves someone overseas, someone from somewhere you never heard of sending you a bank check or money order, and you basically being told to take your cut and send the rest of the money elsewhere.

This is ALWAYS a scam 100% of the time! NO ONE know matter how stupid they are would ever trust a complete stanger online to cash a check, take their fair share, and send the rest back. Never in the history of the internet has that ever been a legitimate business transaction, ever.

In fact, you really wouldn't miss anything if you just make it a policy never to accept a check or money order from anyone you can't physically meet and verify their whereabouts. Any large business doing international business virtually always uses wire transfers for overseas transactions - it's much quicker and more secure, than a physical check, since funds are transferred instantly from one account to another. Any small timer trying to do international business should be expected to have a VERIFIED Paypal account - at least some effort on someone's part will have been made to insure that they are who they claim to be.

I got the same letter from a "Jason Perez" and It said everything above. I got two emails. I got suspicious after repling that I would do the job. I traced the IP address on rateabull.com and found out that the link was not from Australia as he claimed, but a IP address from California and a weird IP location from outside Africa. I emailed the guy and told him that I was offered another job.

My son and his girlfriend were looking for an apartment in another city on Craigslist. They found something interesting and wound up talking via email to some character who was out of the country and asked them to send him a check for the first month's rent sight unseen. Sheesh. It's horrible how these people prey on the innocent.

Hi, I am from Dallas and I actully applied for the Personal Assistant that I saw on Craigslist. So I am supposed to be receiving "payment" today that I am supposed to deposit into my account. The thing is, I was told I would be receiving money orders, not checks. Does anyone one if money orders are the same as checks in that they can be fakes? I am sure they can, but just wanted to see if anyone knew. Or if someone actually went through this and received money orders, not checks that turned out to be fakes. Thanks for any information. I will wait to see what, if anything, I receive today and repost with an update.

I chose email to my means of communication and I love it. Please I'm really sorry for any sort of inconvenience this might have caused. My fiancee is 26 yrs old and presently in Canada. I received your application,I'm sure you'll understand I tend to have a very busy schedule at this point. Please note that this position is not office based for now because of my frequent travels and tight schedules, it's a part-time, work from home basis and the flexibilty means that there will be busier weeks than others, so it's a little difficult judging the exact number of hours you'll be doing per week.If you can manage your time properly, this job may even give you some extra while you do something else on the side.

As I have said, I'd want us to get a head start with things as soon as possible. I do have a pile up of work and a number of unattended chores which you can immediately assist me with, I hope we can meet up with the workload eventually. Permit me to use this coming week to test your efficiency and diligence towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it to mine. I really need to find the perfect person for this job, I'm confident you can take up the challenge and on the long run we should have a relatively sound working relationship between us.

I am glad you are willing to work with me and i promise to be a good boss.I am also glad on the commitment in working. I have been checking my files and what i would want you to do for me next week is to do shopping for office equipment/printing materials for my new office,A check will be mail to you from a Client next week , the money is needed to get some Tools need for my new office.

So the payment you are receiving is for my Client and the Money is Needed to furnish my New Office , the Money is needed to get some Equipments and tools into the Office .

So once you received the Check all needed of you to do is for you to deduct your $500 weekly Pay from it and send the remaining money to the Manager to arrnage those Tools inside the Office ,

I want you to email me back soon as you received this message for me to be rest assure you are still with me .

I await your mail..

Thanx

I'd want us to meet up on Yahoo chat as soon as possible so we can discuss this extensively, more so it's easier for me to convey information's once I'm online. My Yahoo ID is the same as my e-mail address,benwilliam6@yahoo.com It may be a little difficult working out the time difference between us initially, with time however, we should get used to it.

I'm online most of the time when I'm not out or in a meeting so we should be able to have a chat sooner than you think.. Do try to keep a date.

I am glad you are willing to work with me and i promise to be a good boss.I am also glad on the commitment in working.

I have been checking my files and what i would want you to do for me by next week is to run some errands out to an Orphanage,You will be making some donation to them as i always do every month.I just want to use this to test your efficiency and know how active you can work for me.

The donation will be in form of Money Order and it will be sent over to you from one of my clients and i have some list to email you once you received the funds,I guess you will make some arrangements by buying some stuff for the kids in the nearest store around you and mail them out to any given information i provide for you or you will send the funds in cash to them.

I will get you more information on that.

If you keep the money... the check or money order (not sure how the scam works with that but I understand any international payment is in question unless it is PayPal).... will eventually BOUNCE and the bank will hold you responsible for the money plus fees.

Stay away from any employer who claims to be overseas and busy who wants to pay you to buy things and let you keep the remainder for yourself. Be real... would you ever trust someone you didn't know with real money and offer someone a "job" like this?

NO.. exactly...

Great comments. Those jerks are so wordy and just plain dumb. A attorney with poor grammar??

Craigslist rental scams always refer to wanting a good God fearing tenant to care for their property while they are out of the country. When I did the research and realized it was a scam, I email back "sorry I wasn't a God fearing person."

Thanks for your postings. It's about time someone let others know about the scams. I have seen postings on Craig's List where others are tired of the scams and are trying to warn others, but nothing to this extent. I think you might have covered "all the bases". I am an accountant by trade but have also previously been involved in sales, so I'm a very cautious person to begin with, but I've had similar replies like all of the above. I haven't fallen for any of them "yet" and hope they don't come up with a scam that catches me off guard. I'm still applying for jobs on craigslist.com but I refuse to send my SS# to websites that I even KNOW are secure. And as for bank information or cell phone numbers, I state that I don't have one. I also do not give out my birthdate or my mother's maiden name - these can be used to obtain a birth certificate or a copy of my SS#. They would also need your birthplace. Result: I believe my personal info is secure! Let's hope I'm right. Be careful - all of you! Good Luck with your job search!

This scam is going around again..I unfortunately even got suckered at first and sent my info..that was requested and got all excited to start! Until I received the second email which started to raise a red flag in the pit of my stomach, "MONEYORDER"! Thank goodness I came across this site, the similarity to the others is just way to coincidental!

Subject: Re: Personal asst- part-time (chicago)

Hello,

Hope you're having a pleasant day today

You contacted me applying for the position which I advertised on Craigslist. Do take time to go through this introductory mail and feel free to pass any questions on.

My profile briefly:

I'm Janet Cole, 48, a divorced mother of 2 wonderful kids, a successful entrepreneur and investor, a member of the Angel Investment Network. I'm also a research journalist and I travel every now and then within and outside the US working on various independent projects, this is why I need someone who can help keep up to date with all of my activities especially when I'm away and amidst my busy schedule.

I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has since moved on with her personal life and it has affected me in a way. I found her previously on the craigslist website and I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been.

Please note that you are being hired only on a personal level. All correspondences would be made and promptly reported to me personally. The position is part time and home-based meaning you can work most times from your home as long as you have a regular internet access. You are also hired on a trial basis for now until we are able to see how well we fit in, this however does not affect your weekly wage.

Most of your activities will be carried out locally and most official packages will be delivered via posts. You will be actively involved in my personal, business and financial life. In summary, your activities as my assistant amongst other things will include;

* Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence;

* Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring;

* Organizing and maintaining diaries, memos and making appointments;

* Dealing with incoming email, faxes and post;

* Carrying out background research and presenting findings;

* A personal reminder for Schedules, programs, flights and keeping me up to date with them as they come up;

* Arranging travel and accommodation

* Carrying out specific projects and research;

* Taking on some of the my responsibilities and working more closely with management and other staff related to me;

* Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.

* Handling and monitoring financial activities.

* Processing and taking charge of weekly payments and purchases.

* You will also be a part of my household and a helping hand to issues as they arise.

* General clerical activities.

Basic wage is $500 a week.

Any extra personal expenses (transport, gas, etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working week.

This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing, just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I believe will resolve itself as time goes on.

This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I'm currently in England now for a project, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with immediately, prior to my arrival.

Due to the excessive number of responses to my Ad, do provide the following details about yourself for my personal record update and to filter applicants;

Full Names

Full Contact Address

City

State

Zip Code

Phone Number (H)

Phone Number (M)

Occupation (if any)

Sex

Marital status

Age

I hope you can be available for me immediately before I arrive, it certainly can act as a stable foundation to our impending working relationship.

Hope to hear from you again.

I just found a very informative article on www.expertlaw.com about Money Order Fraud. This explains it perfectly!

What Is Money Order Fraud?

Money order fraud involves forged certified checks and money orders, typically drawn on an overseas bank, which are issued to an unsuspecting person. The person is assured that a money order or certified check is "as good as cash." The victim deposits the check into a bank account, and initially the check clears. The person then withdraws part or all of the funds, and wires them to the person who sent the check. The check is then dishonored as a forgery, and the bank withdraws the money from the victim's account or demands repayment from the victim.

Many people who fall victim to this fraud think that they protecting themselves by checking with the bank to be sure that the check has cleared before they withdraw any money. Unfortunately, this fraud is based upon laws which require banks to make deposits available to their customers within a specified period of time, which is usually significantly shorter than the amount of time it takes for the bank to determine that the check is no good.

Why Aren't Banks Protecting Their Customers?

As was previously mentioned, banks operate under federal regulations which require them to make deposited funds available to a customer within a specific amount of time. If banks do not detect a problem with the check during that time, they will make the funds available to the customer. A bank teller may sincerely believe that as the funds are available in the account, the check was good.

Faced with the prospect of having to explain their violation of federal banking laws, particularly in cases where the checks ultimately are honored, banks have opted to follow the law and put a risk of loss on the person who deposits the check. The banks defend this practice, noting that the person who is in the best position to know if a particular transaction is suspect, or that a particular check may be forged, is the customer.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from money order fraud:

1.

Think About The Offer. Most of these scams are obvious once you think about them. Why would somebody who supposedly can't get funds out of a country be able to send you a money order - thereby getting funds out of the country - and why would they pick a complete stranger as their partner? Why would somebody need an intermediary to deposit large money orders for them, when they obviously have their own bank account? Why would somebody who could easily send money to their own shipper trust a complete stranger with thousands of dollars to be forwarded to the shipper, rather than simply paying the shipper directly?

2.

Get the Money Through a Money Transfer Service. You may have noticed that the perpetrators of this fraud don't want you to send them a check - they want the money wired to them (or to their partners in fraud) through an international money transfer service like Western Union. If you're selling somebody an expensive item such as a car, there is no reason that you can't insist that an international seller pay through a wire transfer service.

3.

Insist On Checks From A U.S. Based International Bank. While any time you participate in a deal that seems suspect you risk that the money order you receive will be fraudulent, you can at least insist that the money order sent to you be issued from a U.S. based international bank. If the person is in a nation with no international bank branches, insist on a wire transfer service. Using a domestic bank will make it much more likely that the forgery will be detected before the check "clears".

This is a type of fraud where the offer is almost always too good to be true. If you have any suspicion that the person you are dealing with may not be completely legitimate, don't send that person any money until you are absolutely certain that the check has been honored by the overseas bank.

Here is a new one that is going around for an office assistant.

RE: Office Assistant?

From: daniela gohui (danielagohui@hotmail.com)

Since we have been getting a lot of replies from our ad and we have very little time to make the interviews (since New Year’s coming up), we decided to eliminate some prospective employees by doing an online interview by email. In this email there are a couple of question that we want you to answer as best and honest as you can, our HR team then, based on your answers, will choose 3 persons, email them the next and final step of the online interviewing process and then schedule the time and place for the actual interview.

The questions are:

* What five adjectives describe you best?

* Why should we consider you for this position?

* Tell me about the one thing in your life you're proudest of.

* What qualities do you think are necessary to make a success of this job?

* Is there anything that will prevent you from getting to work on time?

* Is there anything that will prevent you from working the job’s regular hours?

* What kinds of work interest you the most?

For any questions or observations please reply to this email and we’ll contact you as soon as possible.

ok you then answer the questions and you receive a reply 3 hours later that goes like this.

If you receive this email it means you’re 1 of the 3 that passed to the second part of our online hiring process after our HR team analyzed all the answers and chose the best candidates for the position, we thank you for keeping up with the online interview and responding the questions, we know this is not a very conventional method but since time is short it was a necessity.

The last part now requires you 3 to send us a credit check report completed online by yourselves through our business partner’s website (it only takes 5 minutes to complete).

Use this URL to access our partner’s website http://bit.ly/4YjY6f

Once this has been accomplished, email us a copy of your credit check form with your contact number attached and one of our employees in our HR team will call you back to arrange the best place and time for your interview.

We assure you that all the information you use for the credit check report will be kept private and will never, under any circumstances, made public. If you have any questions or observations please reply to this email and we will contact you as soon as possible.

I am so thankful that I found this website. I check Craigslist every day and I realize that the scams have been getting worse. Unfortunately, my resume is out there with my name, address and phone number. I applied to a number of posts that sounded really great until they asked for a credit report. Several times I got my hopes up for nothing. After reading these comments I will be more cautious. Thank you all for sharing.

Jade  says:

I have been contemplating this idea for a long time. I was hoping craigslist would get better at filtering their job post. However as we all have seen, it's just gotten worse.

so...

Can someone with the ability and computer-tech knowledge create a similar web site with only LEGITIMATE jobs...

I am a stay at home mom constantly searching for jobs for friends and family of mine, so I have the time and dedication it will take to create and filter the web site, however I am limited on creating one. If someone could donate their time and expertise to get one started they could train me and others that volunteer, that have a heart for those that are unemployed and sincerely need jobs to support their families such as putting food on the table and gas in the tank to get to work the next day. I really feel bad for the average Americans that are being scammed not only from time but their dignity and their hope and so much more.

I already have a long list of possible ideas... I will be the first to donate any time needed to create this project.. rather it be filtering, marketing, posting, whatever is needed. I have a long list of qualifications in these fields and many others that I would offer... who knows the project could become really big however, I would prefer to keep it non-for-profit, not only because I don't look to profit from it but that, business's would feel more safe and secure knowing that we have nothing more to gain except appreciation from a site they can trust. Through our listing I feel that if we can create something like that and put craigslist and others out of business ( in the job market at least) or make ours just as well known then we would be helping to restore hope to %75-%100 of these victims, or future victims.

My email: is jaderompf@aol.com

After I determine you are not trying to scam me I will be more than happy to give you my phone number so we can discuss this project on a more personable level of communication.

Please let me know what you think and if you could volunteer.

I realize I will be getting responses from every state not just from my city and state (Lakeland, Florida) however If you tell me the city and state your in I can match you up with others near or around you... or you could just run an ad and collect those names of citys and states on your own.

Thank you,

lets work together to restore what we have left of our job market.

Scams are everywhere. I think Education is the key.

I just got this one in my personal email box which could have been obtained from any legitimate site I posted my resume.

Clearly this is fishy as:

a. it seems to good to be true when you need no knowledge just a computer and a printer (who doesn't have that?)

b. they mention Western Union

c. they talk about processing payments

The key is to investigate matters before you give PRIVATE information. I wouldn't worry about people having your resume only that you will get crap emails like this one...

Another type of scam involves Kirby Vacuums where you work as an independent contractor and only get paid if you meet a certain sales quota. Other ads are similar where you have to sell a product and have to sell a certain number of items a month in order to get paid.

The Kirby sales thing sounds like a bad deal but I wouldn't categorize it as a scam since they are disclosing their terms up front.

S  says:

One to watch out for is Third Stage Marketing. They advertise for administrative assistants; once you apply, you get a link to their website which requires a credit check. Besides the credit check, what alerted me to the fraud is a website that won't give any info about the company beyond the front page with some very rudimentary marketing information and no further info. When I looked into the domain registration, it showed that domain was purchased only days ago and that domain buyer's name is hidden. All bad signs.

Here is one that is on the same order as the other scams I have read throughout this whole site. Like many out there, I am hard pressed right now and trying to find some steady, legitimate means of income to keep a roof over my head. I am so ticked right now after reading the other scams, I am going to reply to this one in a "not so nice" way...just look at the verbage they used towards the the end of their email to me, "Do not play with our time and our money, do not apply if you are not able to perform the simple tasks!", Gimme a !@#$% break!...

You are accepted for this position.

A certified check of $1,270 will be released in the morning for the position you applied for. It will arrive to your address within 4-6 days from today. Simply cash the check same day when you receive it, at your bank, and follow instructions. It is very important to post the ads exactly like we will send it to you, all words. After the ads are posted you still have 24 hours and you can modify the content, no problems if you make a mistake first time, simply forward us the confirmation emails that publications will send and we will correct if needed.

You will place 2 employment ads after you receive first payment in Chicago Tribune and Miami Herald newspapers. You will call an 1-800 number to do this task. You will receive instructions and complete "how to" specifications, also the text that will appear in the ads, it will take like 5 minutes to do it. Simply let us know when you will receive the cashier's check next week. Your commission is $200 from this order. You must place the order in max. 48 hours after you receive the money.

Requirements:

Do not cash certified checks at check cashing stores, they have huge fees and we don't support them.

Do not abandon your email addresses we have on file from you! Check your email every evening, check also BULK/SPAM folders, our updates may go there sometimes.

Do not play with our time and our money, do not apply if you are not able to perform the simple tasks!

Definitely not a scam! They are not asking you to receive strange checks or do minor tasks for absurd sums of money. They talk in complex technical terms and have an actual job description that would only appeal to a select few individuals. They also write and spell well.

I heard of a scam that involved a group of people working for a "company" that was overseas. They did all of the technical work and never received payment.

You always want to make sure you are working for an actual company and do your research.

Other than that...if this is a scam...they got me....

Craigslist needs to do something about these scammers. I consider myself internet savvy but have not had much experience with Craigslist. I have been searching for jobs on Indeed, Simply Hired and Career Builder, etc and then

someone told me to give Craigslist a try. I applied for 8-10 jobs not suspecting any foul play. Then before applying to a hotel job I put the email address into Google to see if I could find out what hotel the job was at. All of a sudden I found out about the Flake List. I found out that the job I was applying to was being posted in 30 other cities. I felt like a complete fool. I proceeded to check all of the other email addresses I applied to and you guessed it - all on the Flake List! I was so angry and felt violated. I spent so much time applying for these jobs (writing cover letters, etc) and was also excited about the jobs. I was so deflated when I found out that they were all scams. I hope something can be done to stop these malicious, time-wasting jerks!

Sent my resume to a contact@nfalon.com (this must sound familiar to ricky) and received the same response. Asked for more information on the company and got SO Media (Southern Ontario Media, which is in Canada, that NFalon in ricky's post is in Germany...interesting.)Southern Ontario Media is no longer in business and I am now receiving emails from different addresses explaining to me that i'm to receive a 2,889 check that I would send out using Western Union. I've been trying to talk them into stopping the emails but they're now harassing me even more. It's ridiculous, these scammers have nothing better to do then try to threaten you with the "lawyers" they're affiliated with in all of the major cities of the states. The only annoying thing is that my name, email, phone number, and address were all on the resume, looks like i'll be updating that asap to avoid future issues.
