Searching for a Job!

Paradign Shift

First and foremost I don't want to discourage you in your job search. I am going to talk mainly about my experiences in the job market before I finally decided to take control of my own destiny.

There are basicaly 2 types of people:

Employees and Employers!

Which one are you? It seems like a simple enough question but before you answer I want you to think about it for a moment. Just because you have a job and you work for someone else does not automatically put you in the employee category. Also being the boss does not immediately tag you as an employer.

What I am referring to is your frame of mind. I know plenty of employers that work as employees and vice versa. OK before you start yellin "STOP TALKING IN RIDDLES" let me clarify.

I met a woman today (inspired this hub) who is obviously of the employer mentality. She was in a resume writing course that was supposed to help you make your resume more attractive to potential employers. When she began describing her skills I began to wonder why she wanted to work for someone else (and apparently so did the teacher). It became clear almost immediately that she was Overqualified for the the job she wanted. I found myself wishing I could work for her.

When I asked her if she ever considered contracting herself out to provide the same service she was trying to get hired to do. (I wish I could have taken her picture at that moment) The look on her face was a cross between "Huh" and " What you talkin bout Willis?!?!" Her response was "You know I thought about it but I'm not "THERE" yet".

Sound familiar?

As of the writing of this hub I have decided to stop job hunting. I know I need to pay the bills but I'm spending more money looking for a job then the job itself is worth. Gas, Professional looking attire, Time(That's the big one) My time is extremely valuable and I need to be paid as such.

How much is your time worth? $10 per hour, $20 per hour, $200 per hour only you know the answer. Most people don't feel that their time is worth much (Even if they tell you different). They settle for pay that is waaayyy below what they feel their time is worth because the news scared them into believing they have to take whatever they can get in this suffering job market. Well people I got news for you. The Job Market is NOT I repeat IS NOT suffering... it's CHANGING! It's evolving with technology, new ways of thinking, new ways of filling needs, new needs.

I really don't think people realized the scope of the change that Obama beat into the consciousness of America. He meant more than a "Changing of the guard" so to speak, he was also referring to a change in the culture of tradition.

The rule makers are dying out. Time favors the youth. And a new generation of rule makers are popping up with new more creative ways of getting things done. This applies to just about every aspect of life in this country, even the job market.

Think about it like this: Would you use a hammer if you had a nail gun? Probably not. Why hire a person to do a job that's being done automatically by some software.

It's time to change the way we think. Traditional ways are a 20th century thing This is the 21st century time to step ya game up.

Think outside the box!  More to come!

"Why hire a person to do a job that's being done automatically by some software."

I work at McDonald's this summer (and am looking at all these websites on resumes and interviews so that i can get a marginally better job in the school year) and when I was being trained I was thinking...

Why don't they make a computer program to do most of this? Like a vending machine.

Man, once again you are on point (I read your Hip Hop hub). I lost my job over a 1yr ago (and everything else) & its been hell! I've gone through every possible emotion. I had stopped looking & start thinking outside the box too.

I started looking again 1mo ago, but I still think outside the box & work on pursuing what I "really" want to do - Write! I use every outlet possible to promote myself; joining websites, I've created my own website, I even leave the URL on my resume!

Like you said, bills still need to be paid & I do have an immediate need for an income, but I'm primarily focusing on pursuing writing as my life-long career by all means. I definitely have the Employer Mentality; the one in which I'm the boss, period.
