Social networks have had a history of being used for purposes most would deem unimportant.
Social networking giants such as MySpace and Facebook have been around for a while now and have been used for simple tasks such as making friends over the internet, staying in touch with real life friends, or organizing parties. However, as social networks have been growing in popularity, their uses have been expanding as well. Social networking sites are popping up all over the internet and are being used for a variety of purposes.
Uber.com for example is a site that allows for more personal flair. According to the co-founder, Glenn Kaino, Uber.com is a site that is directed toward "artistically and culturally curious people." "Uber was never meant to be just a social network. What we wanted to bring to the table that was different from Facebook and MySpace was the ability for people to author better-looking environments for themselves and provide context."1 Uber.com is a social networking site that allows for more personalized profiles.
Linkedin is another example of a social networking site with a purpose that differs from the norm. The purpose of this site is to help out professionals seeking ways to find new contacts. Linkedin has over 24 million users from around the work, most of whom are experienced professionals from all around the world.
For the college bound crowd, there is a new site aimed at future college students looking to get recruited. Zinch.com is like a Facebook, but it allows colleges to see the prospective students' profiles so they can look at more than just a students test scores and GPA, giving the recruiters a chance to get a sense of who the student really is. Colleges as prestigious as Yale University have already signed up for the site.
One possible use for social networks that the site Yellojobs.com is pioneering right now is job recruitment. The idea is to have a network of users, both employers and potential employees. An employer can post an add for a job with a reward attached, but the catch is, a person must be referred to the possible employer by someone else on the network. Yellojobs.com capitalizes on the fact that the majority of the most successful hires made by companies come from referrals.
So, if you are a company, why not give the site a try? There is no reason not to, the site is free.
The internet is a fast growing place and its uses, along with the uses of social networking sites, are expanding. Though the internet may be new to some, the newest generation of possible recruits have grown up with it. It would only feel natural for them to be recruited for a job on a social networking site. Hey, it is working for recruiting college students and connecting professionals, why wouldn't it work for recruiting talent?

There is also a new site launching in October that combines social networking with recruiting for the college community. It is called Reality University and it is for the serious college student looking for a career. The founders of RU have developed this peer to peer development site by combining social networking with the job search and posting capability that Recruiters are used to using. Students, grads and employers can engage in communication all for the result of finding internships and entry level positions. It has everything. It's very cool, you can get info at info@realityuniversity.net
