When you are only 14 year old, it is hard to find a job and there are many restrictions. For Instance, 14 year olds are only allowed to work up to 3 hours a day and 18 hours a week during the school year. Once school is over, then they can work a 40 hour work week but it has to be between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM. During the summer though, they can work up to 9 PM.

Once you figure out the hours you are allowed to work, there are further limitation on jobs for 14 year olds. These have to do with the types of jobs that are allowed. Any job that is classified as dangerous or hazardous is NOT allowed. This would include such jobs as coal mining, logging, sawmilling, using power driven machines, meat packing, roofing, and any job that might expose you to radioactive substances.

Basically, if the job has a machine of some type involved, it might not be allowed. Also jobs where you can fall off of something or any job that you could be harmed is not going to be allowed for 13, 14, and 15 year olds.

There are laws that say what ages kids can start to work and what types of jobs they can do. Hazardous and dangerous jobs are not allowed for any kid 15 years old and younger.

*10 and 11 year olds can do farm work if they do it on farms owned by their parents. As always, they must do that when school is not in session.

* 12 and 13 year olds can work other jobs other than farm jobs as long as they are not dangerous, hazardous and they must be at a different time from school hours with the parent's consent.

* Jobs for 14 year old and jobs for 15 year olds cannot be anything that is hazardous or dangerous and they have the hourly restrictions listed in the above section.

* 16 year olds and anyone that is older can work most jobs whether they are hazardous or not and they don't have a hourly restriction. Of course they can't work in bars and other places where you have to be 18 or 21. .

What is outlined above are the federal rules and regulations for jobs for kids 10 years old and higher. It should be noted that every state has its own rules in addition to the federal rules. So for instance, if you are looking for jobs for 14 year olds in Maine, you need to check with that individual state to see if there are any additional restrictions other than the federal ones.
