John Barrowman is an actor and singer in the UK. He's talented and great-looking, and he comes across as a really nice, fun-loving guy. John got his start in London's West End (similar to Broadway), but became known to a wider audience when he appeared as 'Captain Jack' in the revived Doctor Who series.

Captain Jack Harkness first appears in the 2005 Doctor Who episode "The Empty Child." Jack is a time traveler and former con man from the 51st century. He is also "omnisexual," meaning he's interested in any being with a zip code. In the 2005 series finale of Doctor Who, Jack is killed and then resurrected as an immortal.

As a result of Captain Jack's popularity, the character was spun off into a new series, Torchwood, a darker and more adult-oriented science fiction series than Doctor Who. Torchwood is an organization dedicated to combating alien threats. Jack's immortality and sexual preferences give the show an interesting twist.

What About Us? Video

Brief Bio

John Barrowman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 11, 1967. His family moved to the U.S. when he was eight, and he grew up in Illinois, where he learned to "speak American" so the other kids wouldn't make fun of him.

While attending the Performing Arts School at the United States International University in San Diego, California, in 1989, John went on a class trip to London. While there he was asked to fill the open role of Billy Crocker in the play Anything Goes. Thus began his career in the UK.

He went on to appear in many other plays, including Miss Saigon, Matador, Phantom of the Opera, Hair, Sunset Boulevard, Evita,  Chicago, A Few Good Men, Cinderella,  Jack & The Beanstalk, Aladdin, and Robin Hood.

John has lots of good stories and juicy tidbits in his autobiography, Anything Goes. (If you ever meet him, don't touch his head or neck.) The book is engaging and fun. It's down-to-earth and shows his love of his work and of his family, and his irreverent sense of humor.

Since his Doctor Who and Torchwood fame, he has released two CDs: Another Side in 2007, a compilation of songs that he says represents the journey of his life, and Music Music Music in 2008, a collection of his favorite songs plus an original, "What About Us?," written for John by Gary Barlow.
