Jordin Sparks - American Idol or Chosen Idol

Somehow Jordin Sparks went from a 16 year old giggly girl that mildly impressed us to a 17 year old woman vying for the title of American Idol that she won handily. How was it that she so increased her stock in those months between auditioning and performing, and how did her performances move from she just might do well to joining the ranks of LaKisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle, to beating them out for the title?

I have to admit I've thought a lot about this one. As a faithful viewer of this show for all six seasons, and as a writer covering it with recaps and commentary for the past three, I understand it pretty well. But this season has just been flat out odd, and I struggle to figure out what happened to odds on favorites, and left us with the youngest winner ever, that is cute and bubbly, and has more talent than many adults can hope to ever have, yet when she struggles, she really struggles.

Jordin Sparks, whose father is a retired NFL cornerback for the New York Giants, lives in Glendale, Arizona, and has been a faithful viewer of American Idol since its inception. She had been counting down the days until she turned 16, the minimum age for American Idol auditions. During her audition in Seattle, Jordin sang Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion, and Randy Jackson was immediately sold, while Paula Abdul liked her smile and predicted she would do well in the competition. Simon wasn't as easily sold. He compared her to putting 11 spoonfuls of sugar in his coffee.

As Randy informed Jordin she made the top 24, he reminded her that she had struggled in the Hollywood rounds with nerves. Once she took the stage to perform, at the age of 17, the nerves didn't seem as prevalent. In the earlier rounds she was always just as sweet, yet claimed she had lost a spoonful or two of her reserve. Regardless, it was surprising to hear that big booming voice singing Gimme One Reason, and while she would be pitchy every once in awhile, her bubbly personality made it easy to forget.

Jordin picked up a habit of drawing an imaginary heart on her chest when Ryan Seacrest would read her voting numbers and was never shy about showing her emotions, crying easily when her friends would be voted out or when talking about her relationship with her brother during dedication week, and Melinda Doolittle was always there to fill in maternally for her. At some point the show of emotions was so prevalent, it was hard to tell whether it was a little bit of show, or whether it was all honest, true emotion. After all, she was only 17, and Randy wasn't going to let us forget it, reminding us of that every week.

It was always Simon that would bring Jordin back down to earth, and who was always very honest in his critique, finding her a bit shrieky at times. Guest mentor Diana Ross critiqued her pretty honestly as well, saying she had an inner light about her, but she needed to work on getting the audience to believe what she was singing. It was the words Randy had for her that week that seemed to sink in the most, though. He told her she made it a three girl race between herself, Melinda, and LaKisha Jones. That, combined with the good critiques she received the following week for a very good version of I Who Have Nothing, made her seem like she was listening too much to how good people thought she was, and while the sweetness was still prevalent with her, it seemed a little forced.

Jordin seemed to fail when she was singing current songs like Gwen Stefani's Hey Baby, as it just didn't seem to be who she was, but the judges, give or take Simon Cowell, were usually always in her corner, and after awhile, it just seemed like she was being pushed on us. I went from really liking her and saying I just couldn't help but love her to just wanting her to go away, and it really wasn't her performances so much as I felt she was being forced on me. This was who my American Idol was going to be whether I liked it or not.

It all just seemed to be such a weird year in the making at American Idol. Jordin had a few really bad weeks in the middle of the competition, and at one point people were wondering if her time was up, but no matter what, every time she pulled through, and every time the judges kept talking her up, all except Simon Cowell. After singing Never Walk alone, Randy said it was the best performance ever on any American Idol season. Ever? Better than anything Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, or Carrie Underwood did? Jordin really struggled with Bon Jovi week. Her look as well as her performances were off, and even Randy had to admit it this time. Yet, she stayed, while Chris Richardson and Phil Stacey, who had had a great week, left.

It made us all begin to question the season. Phil may have struggled in the earlier rounds of the show, but we were really digging him his last few weeks. Yet, he was gone, and Jordin stayed. The following week, Bee Gees week, she took on a Barbara Streisand tune and it just didn't seem like a 17 year old should sing a song like that. LaKisha Jones was getting slammed for taking on classics by like Fantasia, and no one mentioned perhaps Jordin shouldn't have taken on Streisand, yet Simon did mention that it seemed pageanty. When the dust settled after the elimination, LaKisha was gone.

Final three week it seemed like even Simon was tired of having Jordin pushed on him. After Blake Lewis, Jordin, and Melinda sang three songs apiece, and the judges were asked who they thought would make it to final two, Randy picked both the girls and Paula refused to choose sides. Simon said it didn't matter to him, as long as his girl Melinda was there. After results night, Melinda was out, the Blake and Jordin were in, along with executive producer Nigel Lythgoe's comments that he was upset with Simon for dissing Jordin, because she was his personal choice for this year's American Idol. If she made it through the votes anyway, why was Nigel upset?

What Nigel should have been concerned with instead, was during that last week of the show, instead of people sitting around on message boards and forums discussing who should win the show, people were discussing where it went wrong this year and looking forward to next year. That's a big concern. And once Jordin went on to win, there still doesn't seem to be the excitement we've had in years past. While the show did lose viewers this season, the two nights still ranked number one and number two in the ratings, so it's not in danger, but Nigel should be considering this a warning.

It seems Nigel and Randy were backing Jordin because they saw her as marketable, which is understandable. She's cute as a button and young, and has no identifiable sound, so they probably see her as pluggable. And this is coming off of Clive Davis' disagreement with Kelly Clarkson over the direction of her third album. They probably figure they can choose all the songs they want and just insert Jordin's voice and marketability.

Despite the fact that of six separate American Idols, my favorites have only won twice, I felt America's choice had always been represented. This time I just don't feel it. Either I missed something major somewhere or something is off. Even during the finale the cheers were louder for Blake and on americanidol.com, asking viewers to choose the most entertaining part of the results finale, people are overwhelming choosing Blake and Doug E. Fresh over Jordin and Ruben Studdard and a few other great moments. I'm just one of those people that needs to make sense out of things and I can't from this one.

Regardless, I hope the best for Jordin. I fear her getting this big giant thing at such a young age may have her fizzling out too quickly in her career, but I do hope she does really well and proves me wrong. She is a sweet girl underneath it all, but I think she became caught up in her own hype when the show began pushing her on us.

I don't have the any idea what show you were watching but, it wasn't the same American Idol 6 I was. I have not seen Jordin ever have a bad night period. Some may have been better than other but, there were not bad ones. Your article sounds like the message board at the AI site. Jordin took what was being told her and she improved every week. Your article is so miss leading it is a shame. If you can't be an objective writter then you should turn in your keep board. It shows that your a Blake Fan with very little fact and a whole lot of opinion. I know you must know what they say about opinions?????

It's too bad you haven't read more of my American Idol writing and only chose to read this article about Jordin. I'm not a Blake fan, so that blows all your assumptions. I also never visit the American Idol site forums, so I'm not one of those people that just wants to air my grievances form the site. I've been writing recaps and commentary for the past three seasons and have been a fan for all six, and never have I seen a season like this one. And of the people I have talked about about this season, many are in agreement that something was amiss. This wasn't an errant rant.

I think Laura's right on with her comments. I felt that "something was rotten in Denmark" for the last two or three weeks of the show. I enjoyed a lot of Jordin's performances, but do I think she was the best out of all of 'em. Not a chance!

I have to take up for Laura. I wanted Jordin to win when it got to the final 2. But I can see some merit in what she writes. Laura is excellent writer and does not deserve to be bashed over her opinion.

Laura, I read your articles every week and think you are right on with this. I am glad to see someone tackle the subject.

I have read a lot of Laura articles and she is always right on IMO.

I so agree with what she wrote here and it does upset me that on one show it was said that Jordan sang than anyone ever had. That is not true in my book.

Laura, first I wanted to say that your AI articles are the best. They are the first (and sometimes only) articles I read during the AI season. Keep up the good work!

I also wanted to comment about Jordin. I started watching season 2, and I feel like each season the judges have had one contestant that the "pushed" by overpraising and sometimes overlooking weaker performances (Ruben, Fantasia, Carrie, Chris Daughtrey); this year I think Jordin was that contestant. Although I started the season really liking Jordin by the end of season 6 I was sick of her because I felt the judges so seriously pushed her.

I am very disappointed in Idol this season.

PS to comment above -- Just for the record, I am not a Blake fan. My favorites this season were Melinda and Chris Sligh.

That's for the kind comments everyone. I'm glad to know I wasn't alone in feeling something just wasn't setting right this season. And hey, I started out liking Jordin as well. All my articles from final 24 and the beginning of final 12 priased her. But it got a bit much after awhle and I feel we saw a truer picture as the season wore on. There's no denying Jordin has fans, and that's great. I honestly do wish her the best. I just don't feel she is representing the majority of America.

I agree whole heartedly with Laura. The last couple of weeks I felt that Randy was shoving her down my throat, and as for not ever having a bad night I would have to disagree and suggest you go back and listen. There is nothing wrong with having a difference of opinion, but personal attacks that goes a little too far. There is no way the most talented singer won this year and that is mho.

Karen, don't get me wrong, I *do* like Jordin, but she wasn't always perfect. "Hey Baby", in my opinion, was awful. "If We Hold On Together" wasn't very good either. So there's two. To balance the bad with her best... "I Who Have Nothing" and "A Woman in Love".

Laura, you are so right about something being amiss this year. There was no excitement, no WOW performance from any of the contestants. In previous years, it was blatant who they wanted to win, but, somewhere during this season, Nigel's choice WAS shoved own our throats. Remember this, the 3 judges take their marching orders from their producer, so, they had to get on the bandwagon when Nigel chose his favorite. It wasn't any different in other seasons either. Ruben was never once criticized. Fantasia was their girl from the git to, as was Carrie Underwood. Chris Daughtry was the chosen one in season 5, and, that backfired on them big time when Taylor Hicks took home the crown. None of them were happy about that, so, they set out to pimp their chosen one anyway, and, make him the breakout star. I, for one, don't believe the results shows. Since this is a reality tv show, they aren't required to adhere to the truth that game shows do, so, they can choose who they darn well want, and, no one is the wiser. Who sees the results anyway? None of the American public hasever been privy to the vote totals. They didn't want Taylor Hicks to win last year, and, when Chris was eliminated (?), they set out to make him the winner anyway. If anyone thinks this show is above board, then I know of a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell them. All my best to Jordin, but, I have my doubts about her career. It will be interesting to see who their breakout star is from this season, and, I'd almost lay odds that it won't be Jordin Sparks.

After seeing that Simon is paid over $80 million just for judging on two of his reality shows, I am still convinced that these series are only about making Simon and the networks richer. There is very little credibility in the whole process. Voting as many times as you can is a complete joke and a farce.

This format seems to be working for generating CD sales in a fledgling music industry. Jordan was never my favorite and frankly I was completely unimpressed with her audition and I was surprised that she continued to advance. She just seemed like a chubby kid with a semi-famous ex-NFL pro Dad which excited Randy much more than it ever did me.

Randy asserts that Jordan will be the next Whitney. I admit that I was a Whitney fan back in the day. But I don't think Jordan or Whitney can reclaim that lost and thrown away talent at its pre-Bobby Brown peak.

Jordin is too young and teary for me but Clive will probably find away to market her. I thought Simon went overboard saying that Jordin wiped the floor with Blake on the last song which she could even end without sobbing once again.

I have heard that Jordin actually failed in her first audition. She originally auditioned in Los Angeles and wasn't allowed through the first round to get in to see Randy, Paula, and Simon. She then won a Ford sponsored American Idol contest in her home town and the prize was a Ford and a trip to the Seattle auditions. I didn't hear this myself, by Jordin admitted it on a talk show. It's interesting that this was never published when we were all voting, isn't it? They made a lot out of Gina's previous AI failures, but never Jordin's.

Laura, I don't always agree with you, especially during Season 5, however, I think you're right on with this article. Yes, Jordin is a lovely young woman and has a wonderful voice, but she's not my American Idol by a longshot. I think AI did everything possible to push this young woman on us, and I'm even skeptical of Simon's comment about wanting "his girl Melinda" in the final. Frankly, I think that was said to make the Jordin and Blake fans vote even harder. I think it was a sure way to get Melinda eliminated. It was the least enjoyable season since Season 3. And what about Randy's comment early in the season about the next Idol having curly hair??? Surely he wasn't referring to Chris Sligh!!!

I have been reading Laura's articles for years now and the only thing I have ever found amiss with them was one typo a few years back! I enjoy Laura's article's because she bases them on fact yet adds her own flair that gets us all to rethink some ideas. keep doing what you're doing, LB.

As for the AI machine- I have personally felt there was always someone each season who was pushed at me, like "this is the person you MUST like and enjoy and vote for". For example Tamyra was wonderful on season one but when she was axed the AI machine brought her back years later to 'push' her again on us and even let her tour with that season's finalists.....there are a lot of things wrong with the AI 'set up", and it's doubtful that will change.

As long as American Idol is money in the bank very little will change. Going from Taylor Hicks to Jordin Sparks seems to be a stretch to the extremes at both ends of the music spectrum. Maybe this was an attempt at capturing greater CD sells to younger fans after the less than stellar Taylor Hicks CD sales. Jordin and Blake in the finale seemed like a big attempt at attracting a larger younger market. They both had more of a cute factor than Melinda or LaKisha.

It was mentioned in some interviews around Jordin's hometown visit that she took off a year to be home schooled in order to prepare for auditions for American Idol again after her initial failed audition. I was surprised to see Inside Edition rebroadcast their interview with Jordin after she won a competition search for a plus size model. Jordin sang at the competition and stated that her next big goal was winning American Idol. She is a very ambitious teenager in addition to her all sugary and nice image. Her family must be enjoying the wins and new cars.

Yes, there is always a chosen one each season according to the pre-planned marketing demographics. The season that Ruben was declared the velvet teddy bear and won, I was convinced that they thought he could replace Luther Vandross. I enjoyed the Jordin and Ruben duet much more than I have ever liked them solo. For once Jordin looked slimmer and daintier instead of like an Amazon woman and Ruben was not soaked in sweat and looked svelte in his suit. Even though Ruben seemed to overpower Jordin’s singing at times, I think they should record a duet on her first CD.

I agree with Laura's analysis. I am reminded of a line from Dreamgirls. Curtis tells Deena, I chose you because your voice had no personality. I wouldn't be that harsh on Jordin, but she was marketability and Melinda was artistry. Marketability always wins over artistry on a show like Idol.

First let me state I am a Jordin fan . I didnt start rooting for her untill Gina got voted off tho . I dont feel that america is voting just on singing abilities . We are voting for who we like . This season pointed that out in numerous ways . I also dont think we pick a new favorite after every show once we chose we stick with them till they get voted off .Ive always wondered if some contestants chose to leave because they had a deal already and didnt want to continue in the contest so they could prusure thier careers . lets face it there are some good singers voted off every year with people ( in my view ) advancing that cant sing as well ... Is the show staged and are we all voting in vain !!!! i would hope not , i dont see where it would benifit them to do that , if they are just in it to sell records they could just sign the singers they want and not even have the show . Laura I may not be able to answer your question of was america's choice represented. I can share why i voted for Jordin . in My mind Melinda was the most skilled vocalist Hands down no questions asked on the show this year . But , In my heart i wanted Jordin to win and thats why I voted for her . i just hope that my vote counted .
