The JuJu Bag Cafe Boldly Opens In Gentilly New Orleans
Many neighbors have not fully returned to their homes across New Orleans. Gentilly is no different. Scattered between abandoned houses, you will find residents who had to come home because New Orleans is the place they call home.
With sparse populations or definitely smaller communites than before the storm, small businesses have been slow to return and open in various neighborhoods.
One such neighborhood is Gentilly. A 10 minute drive from the French Quarter, Gentilly was once a burguoging neighborhood for working class families, minutes from 3 of New Orleans' largest universities, and one of the few communities still displaying both socio-economic and racial diversity among its residents.
JuJu Bag Cafe New Orleans A Labor Of Love
New Beginnning After Katrina
Like most folks, including myself, the owners of the JuJu Bag Cafe, Tommye Myrick and Phyllis Johnson created a new beginning. Never expecting or wanting to own a cafe, the abandoned building Tommye passed for years actually found her.
In her interview with the New Orleans Tribune, she states, everyone told her to tear down the gutted building, but she wanted to save as much as she could.
With Phyllis, her partner, being a Master Barber, adding a barbershop alongside the cafe made sense.
If there was one thing everyone needed after the storm, it was places to go to get normal little things done, like a a hair cut.
The JuJu Bag Opens To Give Residents Alternatives
In a recent local article, Tommye Myrick, one of the JuJu Bag owners, remembers passing the abandoned building for years, that would become the JuJu Bag.
Wanting to give local residents a place to hang out, congregate, talk, share made it worth it to open up the JuJu Bag Cafe to the residents of Gentilly and beyond.
After the storm, folks also needed places to fax documents and get internet access. The JuJu Bag was there to help.

Hi Amy,
It's so great you got a chance to check out the JuJu Bag. I haven't been there lately and missed the election party on election night. I hope to go back real soon before the weather gets "cold" down here. Thanks for commenting on my hub and thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.
A lot of my family is from Mississippi, so whenever I visit them we always head down to New Orleans. It's great to read stories like this about the attitude and spirit of New Orleans residence (and, fairly, businesses).
The JuJu Bag Cafe sounds like a remarkable place, not just because of their food and spirit but also the history around the cafe make it seem incredible.
Can't wait til I go down there again next summer, maybe I'll stop by the JuJu Bag.

I'm a Purdue University student who was fortunate enough to visit the JuJu Bag Cafe during a research tour in New Orleans. It was a highlight of my trip and for many of my peers as well. The atmosphere, hospitality, talent and stories of perseverence were immensely inspirational. I am very moved by the pioneering attitude of the owners of the JuJu Bag and residents of New Orleans. The experience will never be forgotten. You all possess such beautiful and strong spirits! I'm sure I'll make it back to New Orleans in the future and when I do, I'm going to be sure to stop at the JuJu Bag. Best of luck to you ladies with this business. It is obvious that it has been a labor of love.
