Legends say that Judas Iscariot is the father of all vampires
Legends say that Judas Iscariot is the father of all vampires

Judas sold out Christ for 30 pieces of silver. Is this why vampires can not stand silver.
Judas sold out Christ for 30 pieces of silver. Is this why vampires can not stand silver.

Legend says that vampires originated with the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ and that is Judas Iscariot. We all know the Bible story that Judas betrayed Christ for 30 pieces of silver and then when Christ was crucified Judas tried to return the 30 pieces of silver and when the priests would not take it back he cast the silver coins away from him and when and hung himself.  You can find reference to this in Matthew 27 3-5. Some legends down through the years say that those that commit suicide can become vampires.

Some Interesting Vampire Information

Vampires are not mentioned any where in any modern version of the Christian Bible. Demons are but not vampires.

Vampires have been talked about and been a part of Eastern European culture for thousands of years. The vampire has been a part of East European and Irish folklore for thousands of years and vampire hunters were very real. Real people really did try to hunt down and hunt vampires. This has continued even into modern day England. A major vampire hunt went on in 1970.

Many people ( Vampire Hunters ) have been arrested by police in English graveyards complete with crosses and garlic and wooden stakes and hammers. Some people really do believe in the existence of vampires. Arrests have occurred as recently as July of 2009. Almost always the charges are dropped before the case comes to court but the arrests are made of vampire hunters.

Vampire Hunters have even been arrested this year in New Orleans. These are not nuts but people who really believe they are hunting vampires. Some with elaborate equipment.

Judas Iscariot The Father Of All Vampires

And there is a legend among the Hebrew people that God cursed Judas and said that Judas and his decedents would roam their earth as creatures of the night until the end of time. They believed that Judas Iscariot had red hair in life and that vampires with red hair were directly descended from Judas.

The Hebrew legend goes on to explain that vampires have a aversion to silver because of the fact that Judas was paid with 30 pieces of silver for his betraying Christ. Judas tried unsuccessfully to return the 30 pieces of silver so he cast it away from himself and went and hung himself. And the legend says that God refused to allow Judas to escape that way so he ordered him and his decedents to wander the earth as vampires.

However another legend says that Lucifer ( The Devil ) refused to allow Judas to die from hanging himself so he created a half human , half demon race out of Judas and condemned him and his kind to roam the earth to the ends of time. This legend goes on to say that all vampires have red eyes and fangs and will burn if exposed to direct sunlight.

But keep in mind this is a Hebrew legend not anything from the Christian Bible.

I'm pretty sure the film Dracula 2000 took the view that Judas was the original vampire. I'd never heard this myth before I watched that film!

Sorry, I disagree with you. It may be Hebrew legend, but I think it's more fantasy and not Biblical.

No it is not Biblical at all.It is a ancient Hebrew text. Lilith the Dark in the Hebrew legend is the daughter of Judas Iscariot. Vampires are not mentioned at all in the Bible.

Dracula II: Ascension is also a place where the rumor that Dracula and Judas Iscariot are one and the same. In that movie Father Uffizi the Vatican's official vampire hunter says that Dracula is Iscariot and he is given the task not only of killing Dracula but he is also supposed to grant Iscariot absolution.

Thanks your very welcome and after I read your comment I went back and revised the hub to make it plain where the legend or story came from. So thanks for helping me to see it needed to be fixed.

Lillith is also referred to in the original Gangrel handbook from Vampire the Masquerade.

In Vampire the Masquerade Cain is the first vampire.

In Anne (spelled with an "e" for future reference) Rice's Vampire Chronicles vampires began when Akasha's body became posessed by the spirit of Amil, disembodied spirit that wanted to live again and took Akasha when she was near death. Mekare takes the spirit into her when she kills Akasha in Queen of the Damned (not the movie, the book).

Very interesting I've never heard this myth before. I had heard Judas had been cursed, but not to be a vampire.

Hi – interesting article. I was just wondering if you had any links/extra information about these alleged vampire hunters of 2009? And also the major vampire hunt of 1970?

Thanks!
