When the body is sick or undergoing some sort of trauma, the brain sends messages to the body to begin fasting. Juice fasting is the most power natural treatment for any health condition and it even more healthy than plain fasting. It's also a great way to lose weight. The reason it is so effective is because fasting prevents the intake of any food or beverage that has a negative effect on health. These include all animal products, refined sugar and white flour products. Avoiding solid food allows the body to have more energy for detoxification and cleansing. Juice fasting causes waste products stored in tissues to be eliminated, cleanses the colon, and revitalizes the nervous system and organs.

Fruit and vegetables are known for their healing and prevention powers. The National Cancer Society suggests five servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables per day. They conclude that a diet high in fruits and vegetables can prevent or cure many diseases. Fruit juices are used for cleansing and vegetable juices are used for rebuilding. The benefits of periodic juice fasting are a longer life span and a stronger immune system.

Every individual is different and will have a unique experience while juice fasting. Some will feel better than ever. Others will have a number of unpleasant side effects such as fatigue, coldness, headaches, hunger pangs and bad breath. They are a result of body getting rid of toxins and are temporary. It is interesting to note that in the animal kingdom, most animals when sick or injured, instinctively avoid food until they are fully recovered.

Purchase a high quality Juicer

The best kind of juicer to buy is one that chews up the plant pulp to extract all the juice. Another type of juicer that works well is a centrifugal juicer which are available with pulp ejectors. They are very popular and reasonably priced. Be sure to get one with a steel cutting blade and a sleeve that isn’t made of aluminum because it can react with the acids in fruit. It is best to drink the juice as soon as it is prepared. However, you can make as much juice as you need for more than a day and refrigerate it in an airtight container for up to 24 hours.

How Long Should a Juice Fast Last?

To receive the full benefits of a juice fast, it is recommended you continue the fast until you have been free of detoxification symptoms for two days. In the case of disease, it is necessary to remain on the fast until there is evidence of good recovery. This can take from several days to several weeks. If the fast continues beyond seven days experienced guidance will be required. In the case of severe illness, practitioners may provide a juice fasting program or 3 days a week juicing and the rest of the week eating selected fruits and vegetables. After the fast is concluded meat is not allowed by many practitioners during the recovery period. Some practitioners allow patients to have a couple of ounces of protein from white fish or egg a week. Concerns about protein deficiency are unwarranted because the bodies protein reserves will supply the needed protein for the duration of the fast.

How much juice should be consumed during a fast.

There is no limit to how much juice you can drink. You will find that on busier days with increased physical activity you will need more juice. It is common to consume more juice near the beginning of a fast and after a few days find the need for juice decreases. However, this may varies from person to person. Avoid drinking any bottled juices because they lack the needed nutrients and have been found to increase hunger. It is best to avoid large amounts of the more acidic juices in the morning. The best juices for drinking in large quantities are vegetable and melon juices.

Conclusion

Juice fasting is the most powerful form of natural cleansing and healing for the body. It is also ideal for prevention and life longevity when done periodically. Following the guidance of a natural healthcare practitioner is important for individuals with serious conditions requiring extended juice fasts. The long term benefits of juice fasting are much more desirable than temporary relief with unpleasant side effects offered by conventional medicine.

Great hub. I've definitely gotta get a juicer.

This hub also just answered a question I had: Following a recent severe injury, I had no appetite for solid foods (even yogurt!) for about 6 or 7 days (this is SO not like me) and have been very curious as to why. I thought it might have been from the I.V. and/or medications in ICU or something like that. But thanks to you and this hub, I now know it was just my body instinctively going into healing mode. Thank you!

I should have known... the body always knows what's best.

Hey Constant, thanks for the comment! That's an interesting observation. It reminds me of times when I've had no appetite due to sickness and you're right. We have the same mechanism as animals. The body goes into healing and appetite diminishes because the body heals better and faster when fasting.

This is great stuff and very true. I juice daily and do my fasting with the changes of the seasons. When you juice you can almost feel an instant burtst of energy because the food is still live and carries live enzymes with it. I really can't say enough good things about juicing. Thanks for the great advice.

Great Hub Steve. I like juices but have never tried juice fasting before. I am going to try it. Is there any restriction to the type of fruit or vegitable to be used for this?

Thanks for your comment Anamika! Just the points I mention under How much juice should be consumed during a fast. It would be a good idea to buy a juicing book geared towards fasting from your local health store or like the one I posted for Amazon above.

I did something similar to this with a soup diet for a couple of weeks, lost loads of weight and actually felt better for it. I guess this takes the soup principle one step further to make juice with no solid food at all, I might just give it a try.

I'm a great fan of home made vegetable stews too. I make them several times a week in the winter, and I always enjoy them. I see juice fasting as maybe more of a summer thing, but it's certainly worth trying!

I guess I need to do juice fasting too. Since your last comment I have tried to drink more fruit juices and less hot soups. Your hubs are very informative and practical.

Steve- This has nothing to do with juicing. I just had to tell you: I found a bag of dried cantalope slices as Bi-Mart! They're too good to be legal. If they ever chocolate coat these things, I'll definitely OD...

PS: Just a suggestion: You should also put juicers in your Amazon capsule. Some of us (no names, please) are planning on buying one very soon, and just might happily use said juicer link... if they knew it was there.

Hey Constant, you've got me convinced I need to try the dried cantalope. Thanks the comment about the amazon capsule. I will take a look and if I see a good quality juicer on Amazon I will add the link.

very useful info.:)

p.s.If you put some "juicy menu" here, such as what should be blended to make the most nutritious juicy, that would be perfect;)

Thanks for your commnent Wendy.Q!

A healthy combination that tastes good is spinach, carrots, parsley and apples. If you are using a high quality juicer 3 apples, a couple of handfuls of spinach, carrots and parsley should make a couple glasses of juice.

I got a present of a juicer, an american machine that blends fruit and vegetables into a juicy pulpy liquid. I experimented with different ingredients and recipes, and they were awful. But I have discovered they are quite healthy. I recomment totally de-skinning and washing all fruit & veg before blending. I just got a book that has recipes for a variety of healthy tasty drinks that are actually bearable. I was given a cool tip, a filipino fruit called papaya. Its supposed to be very beneficial in several ways.

I agree with the "use steel blades, not aluminium" rule. Steel lasts much longer.

This is the first Hub I have read about Juicers and blenders. Way to go! You make a difference! Hubs can be Good for your health, especially when written by you! Many thanks for a great hub!
