Julie and Julia started as a blog by Julie Powell, became a book, also by Powell, and eventually a major motion picture starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. All three document Powell's efforts to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking cookbook in one year's time.

The blog, book and movie explore the obvious and not-so-obvious ways that the project changed the life of Julie Powell.

The Blog: The Julie/Julia Project

This is how it all began. Julie Powell, a New Yorker in a dead-end clerical job decides to cook her way through Julia Child's cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She gives herself one year to complete the task and decides to document the effort on a blog called The Julie/Julia Project.

Much to Powell's surprise, the blog begins to attract readers and eventually the attention of Newsweek, CBS, and The New York Times, among others. At some point it even attracts the attention of Julia Child herself and her reaction is covered in the book that is born from the blog.

The Book: Julie and Julia, My Year of Cooking Dangerously

While the blog covers the day to day details of the Julie/Julia project, the book tells the larger story of that year and how it affected Powell, her husband, her family, and her friends. It details how the blog began and how it took on a life of its own.

In the book, Julie Powell's experiences are interspersed with fictional accounts of the lives of Julia and Paul Child. Those accounts were based on Julia and Paul Child's letters and biographical information about Julia Child.

The Movie: Julie and Julia

Julie and Julia is the movie version of the book. It stars Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell. it is scheduled to be released on August 7, 2009.

Julie Powell's Other Blog: What Could Happen?

  • The tragedy we pet owners all sign onto.

Our beloved Robert - known to readers of "Cleaving" and the Epilogue of "J&J" - died on Sunday. He was 11 or 12 years old, a dear, dear animal that we were lucky enough to share our lives with for 6 years. The very best dog that ever there was. Eric and I are destroyed, of course, and I've only now felt up to posting this. Of course, losing an animal doesn't rank up there with King Lear on the tragedy scale, empirically speaking, but those of you out there who have gone through this know how excruciating it is. It's what we sign up for, though. He was our heart - and though we know we gave him a good life, and have no regrets on that score - the blank spot he's left is cold and immense. All love, my big bear. PS I ask out of respect to his sweetness that people maybe refrain from violent, nasty comments. I'll post again soon and those of you who get off on meanness and name calling can resume your activities. From this post, I will be removing them.

  • I'm not much one for resolutions

But this year I'm holding on to mine like a life line. I won't go into the specifics other than to say that they include the usual StopDrinkingStopSmokingGetInShape sorts of of things, as well as one or two others more particular to my situation, all of which could be contained under the rubric of "Quit trying to the same things and expecting different results." What about you guys? How's you thinkin' about this new decade?
