Easy Tips For Jump Starting Your Car
Easy Tips For Jump Starting Your Car

Jump Start Your Car (The Basics)

I am one that does not like to mess with electricity....I mean, once you have been zapped...I am not really looking forward to ever getting shocked agin...So, the thought of jump starting my own car, well....not really to hight on myt list of things that I want to be doing...So, hey, you jump start my car, you will be doing me a favor, hence jump starting my heart...Corny? Sure, but what the heck....let me share some basic tips with you so your burned out battery does not turn you into your own personal car-b-que....Corny again...Just hang tight baby, there's more of the corniness...come on give me a break....how can I write about something 'boring' (that could save you life)...that nobody wants to learn? Humor in small doses. Ok....so how did this happen?

Did you leave your radio on? Lights on? Old battery? Have you ever bought a battery? Whatever the reason....you turn your car key to start your car and go do whatever it is you do...and ? Nothing? Your car is dead...What's the problem? A lot of the times this can simply be a dead battery. What to do? Recharge it. How? Well, here is what you will need:

1) Another car that is running

2) Jumper Cables

3) Guts or a little knowledge (and both for the first time you do this)

To begin, put the two cars (dead battery car with running car) so that they are pointing fender to fender (close but not touching eachother). Then turn off both cars, lift the hood on both, apply the red cable to the + sign on the good battery, then the other red cable to the + of the dead battery, then add the black cable to the - symbol of the good battery, then add the black cable to a piece of metal (this is the grounding phase of the connection) in the engine of the dead battery. Then start the engine of the dead car, ....hopefully this works, if it does, then carefully remove the cables in the REVERSE order that you applied the cables.

Since it's better to be safe than sorry...you should keep your car running (this is recharging the battery) and drive to a mechanics shop or to a place where someone can take a look and see if your battery needs replacing. I recommend that you practice one or two times BEFORE you have a dead battery. Drive safe, hope this helps you!

Word of warning, I have had them explode, in winter when sub zero weather slams us from the arctic. This was always a huge truck or industrial battery on a piece of equipment. All it takes is a spark. That ought to make you shy away and then call AAA. :)

Great advice especially if your a newbie and never had the dead battery syndrome, and for those of us who don't have coverage for that sort of thing. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and that means doing it yourself.

Good writing, very personable. Keep up the good work.

You have to do what you have to do. I've become a near pro at jump-starting a car since I tend to drive oldies but goodies. Good Hub.

I once tried to jump start a 4x4 (SUV) from a little Renault Megane, I ended up with 2 flat batteries and had to call breakdown anyway. You live and learn.

Nice information

Here is what I did.

I went of to a scrap car yard bought two old car batteries still ok for cheap, charge them, especially for winter times.

Carry jump leads in a carry bag with a battery, easy to carry.

Transport with you if needed in the trunk/boot.

Ok

Hi Lee Thacker,

I believe you love cars that’s why you have so many interesting hubs about auto insurance. Jump-starting a car sounds dangerous & I will not take a chance.

However, I like the second part of the title. I need a life insurance & I think jump-start my heart sounds interesting possibility; you never know it might work.......hahaha.

Enjoy rest of your day.
