Juneteenth Celebration

June 19th or Juneteenth celebrates the memorial of the Emancipation of slaves in the state of Texas, in 1865, almost three year after the offical announcement on on September 22, 1862, and two years after the effective date of January 1, 1863.

Juneteenth is now celebrates around the country and the world with family and community gatherings, health fairs, church services, financial seminars and trips to famous African-American landmarks. As more American began to understand the need for unity and community throughout the nation, the celebrates has spread from Texas throughout the country.

Many Commuities take the opportunity to share an important part of American history with the next generation. The celebrations does not stop at feasting, but education plays an important. The slowness in which the emancipation of slaves took place demonstrates the need for people and communities to be responsible for their own welfare and that of their commuinities. The lessons demonstrates the need to build community involvement not just on special occasion, but year round to foster better understanding and prosperous communities.

What You Can Do

  • Star you own celebration.
  • If there are not celebrations in local community, search Google to find nearby events.
  • Plan a family event to take advantage of the growing national recognition.
  • Support local community efforts.
  • If you are hosting or know of Juneteenth Celebrations be sure to let others know.
