Improving Your Golf Swing

Searching for golf tips and trying to find some good golf swing advice in order to improve your golf swing is like a drug for a lot of new golfers. They become almost obsessed with finding golf tips or secrets that will propel them from novice to professional overnight. This obsession comes about because most golfers learn the golf swing in entirely the wrong way. There are very few who start off by learning the basic golf swing, and learning it thoroughly.

When you really look at it, it's amazing that there are so many golfers that can play at all. Just look at how we learn most sports, especially field sports, then it becomes easier to understand. We pick up the necessary skills as youngsters playing around with our pals, any scrap of land or a park will do. Golf is a bit harder to pick up this way, it needs so much extra space completely free of other people. That means there is less chance of learning golf in this casual way, and as so few start by taking lessons it really is a wonder that any of them manage at all. So how do you go about this mamoth task to improve your golf swing technique?

First of all, almost every golfer is different, they differ in physical build, strength and ability which gives them their own unique golf swing. This even applies to the tour pros, they have different golf swings and styles from each other. This makes improving your golf swing that bit more difficult, especially if you are trying to copy the golf swing of your favourite pro, this is not a good way to improve your golf swing. Trying to emulate the swing that your favourite professional has is the last way you should be doing it, perhaps after you get your handicap down in the low single figures, you might be able to pick up the odd improvement, but until then, you are just wasting your time. The tour pros have built on top of the basic golf swing, they have manipulated the parts of it that you cannot see and they use a finely tuned version that they have to constantly tweak in order to maintain it at it's optimal level, and even they have bad days, sometimes whole tournaments, with their swing. The difference is that they understand their swing so well that they know what to work on to fix it, or minimise the effect. If you want to hit longer, straighter drives then stop trying so hard to be an instant professional and find out all you can about your own unique swing.

Every golfer has their own natural golf swing that is dictated by their physique, ability and skill level. It's this swing that should be worked on to incorporate the real basics of the golf swing in to help you improve. By taking the time to learn and understand the basic concepts of the golf swing and your own natural swing and skills, you will reap the rewards and find that improvements will be rapid, and more importantly, lasting.

If you ask most golfers why they find it difficult to gain any significant improvements, they will most likely tell you it's because they don't play or practice often enough. But, the truth of the matter is that unless you have the correct knowledge and understanding, practice will make little difference. With the right knowledge and understanding of your swing, practice will be more effective and will make all the difference.
