Just how dumb do we look?!

Note to readers - Before anyone tries to attack what I say, I request that you at least finish reading this hub in its entirety.
I've heard about the book banning, the plot to get her ex-brother-in-law fired, and the infamous "bridge to nowhere". Sarah Palin has graced the covers of US Weekly and People magazine, had her own CNN special, has been interviewed on ABC by respected reporter, Charles Gibson, and now this former beauty queen has not only become the Republican vice presidential candidate, but she's also a media darling now. Fine, but when I saw the Sarah Palin action figure, I knew that I've had just about enough of the hype.

Just how dumb do we look America? Since Palin has her own action figure, where is Dick Cheney's G.I. Joe complete with the hunting rifle and the halliburton case full of government secrets? Where is the Dan Quayle talking and misspelling Mr. Potatoe Head doll? I'm tired of these witty sound bites from our presidential candidates and I'm fed up with the well rehearsed answers that these politicians are quick to give. I don't want to know how well a candidate can memorize a few paragraphs a speech writer writes in anticipation of a certain question. I want to feel the passion and concern a candidate has so sometimes I want to hear hesitation in their voice as they dig deep to come up with a heartfelt answer. Instead of constantly hearing people say, "He/She speaks so well.", we should be saying, "Their speech writer writes so well."

This is a hub I wrote to address all of the issues that I would address if I was running for President and ColdWarBaby made a comment that really made me think. "talented_ink, you know you'll never get elected by actually addressing any serious issues. Where do you stand on flag burning, same sex marriage and lapel pins? These are the things the people are really concerned about." Once you get past the sarcasm, cynicism, and humor of what he said, you start to see the truth. The media and the American public can talk about Trig and Bristol until election time, but that conversation does nothing to address the financial upheaval the country is facing because of Lehman Brothers filing bankruptcy, or Bank of America buying Merrill Lynch. Now here's where I must be honest...I could care less about gay marriage or gay rights. I'm a God fearing Christian(of the non-Evangelical variety) so I don't agree with same sex romantic relationships, but I also feel that it's the individual's choice that they are held accountable for so I don't have the right to judge. I'm more concerned with the rights of every American citizen be they heterosexual, homosexual, or metrosexual when it comes to their health care. I'm more concerned with the future generation getting the best possible education than with who my neighbor marries and I expect my future president to share that same concern.
I don't agree with our nation's "leaders" using clever sound bites, but I have one for them. Come November, we're not voting for the next American Idol. We're voting for the next American president, so I urge the candidates to stop making this a popularity contest and stay focused on the serious issues.

How dumb to they think we are? They think we are abysmally, terminally dumb, and sadly, they seem to be half right. About half the country eats this stuff up. They think it's a new episode of American Idol or a play-off game or something.
I am seeing some backlash now in even the mainstream press against the hype and hoopla. I'm starting to see more articles saying pretty much what you say here. Not everyone likes to be sucker-punched, but apparently enough people do to make it worth trying. Great hub, as usual. Thank you!
I have to agree with both you and Pam. It is astounding to me the way politicians will go on camera and just lie. Extremely absurd, ridiculous, bald-faced lies, and NOTHING HAPPENS. People believe them! Everyone with half a brain - including the media - knows they're lying. But they do it with a straight face, over and over again. If a candidate talked about real issues, real problems, they would not win because that's not what the masses want to hear. It is frustrating.
Thanks for writing this!
Well said talented_ink and not just because of my cameo appearance. Your assessment is crystal clear and your outrage is more than justified. Yet, in spite of all the poisonous deceit and treachery we are surrounded by, you still maintain your integrity and defend the sanctity of individual free will. Above all, what you have to say is clearly motivated by your concern for the wellbeing of everyone and not just those who agree exclusively, and exactly with everything you say.
I’m privileged to have met you, even if only through your words on a monitor. Never surrender.
to Amanda Severn - You are absolutely right in your summation of the U.S. election process. If I tell enough people, "Even yo mama wants Obama!", I guarantee that at least a third of them will be singing that at the voting booth. The most important thing that any U.S. or U.K. citizen(any citizen anywhere) needs to do is study the plans and motives of every candidate so that they pick the one they feel is most qualified.
to pgrundy - I'm really starting to see what ColdWarBaby feels about the media. It's becoming a machine that's run by big corporations so they tell us what they want us to know or what they want us to feel. I'm not big on conspiracy theories because I'm always going to feel that we have the power to make up our own minds and the power to change our government if we only speak up. Thank you for the compliment and thanks for reading.
to Christoph Reilly - Thank you for reading and I wonder how things would be if the people holding the mics would tell McCain that we don't care about his service during wartime or tell Obama that we don't care what his last name is, but instead, we want to know how are you going to address this country's deficit?
to ColdWarBaby - I am completely floored and speechless, but I am also honored by your kind words. Thank you and I feel privileged to have met you as well. I would say I hope you never stop writing, but I have a good feeling you won't.
talented_ink your writing is right on! I too almost had apoplexy when I saw the Sarah Palin action figure. They have gone too far.
The next President will be confronting Hurclean challenges. The truth is no matter what agenda they put forth now, it won't matter because when we get in there and finally see the whole mess, it will call for another set of strategies. I fear Bush has messed up his sandbox beyond anyone's expectations.
Great hub; I too am glad to have met you.
Based on what I have seen of the current candidates,, I submit to you the following:
I am to the point that I believe I can re-invent myself and run for president in a few more years. I mean I am a relative unknown, with a good understanding of marketing and I can even use the internet. I have always said, "It's not how good you are, it's how good you look. " I never relaized how wise and wonderful I really am. Maybe it's time to let the world know. LOL.
It takes a notoriusly special person to perpetrate that kind of lie. There was once a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia...
Excellent hub.
Thanks for sharing.
Funny you wrote this same time I'm fiddling with a hub on a similar thing. I could go on and on in a long response, but, I can sum up my opinion of your hub and it's message by simply saying, "Yup." Good work. (Doesn't it just make you want to rip out all your hair and burn it or something?)

Hi talented_ink,
I agree with near enough everything you say here, but sadly not everyone thinks thinks through quite as thoroughly as you do. I suspect that many people place their vote in much the same way that they pick a horse in a race. Rather than read the form, and finding out what the pundits say, they just choose the one that has the same name as their mother, or the one with pretty markings, or the one that has a female jockey. It's not a reasoned action, it's a knee-jerk reaction to indefinable individual stimulii. Hence a racist would vote for anyone other than Obama, and a gun-toting, religious female might well be drawn to the McCain/Palin ticket. It isn't about what's in the box. It's all about the packaging.
