Justin Spears is an inspiration to both handicapped individuals as well as those of us who would consider ourselves 'normal'. An impressive 22 year old, 6 foot, 205 lb. young man who is challenged by a mild form of Autism, Justin Spears exhibits a unique amount of courage, confidence and intelligence.

Justin participated in Special Olympics, an organization that promotes competive sports for people with disabilities, for over seven years. He competed in bowling, basketball and track. He was a member of a team called the Pflugerville Olympians.

His olympic career resulted in 10 gold medals, 7 of them in bowling, 1 in basketball and two for track. He also accomplished 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.

When Justin was asked what he liked about being involved with the Special Olympics, he said that he enjoyed his time in Special Olympics, made lots of friends and got to travel to Houston and other surrounding towns for events.

When asked if it was hard work, he replied that it was, but it was also very rewarding. He also stated that he recommended everyone be involved either by participation or from a volunteer standpoint because of the many benefits involved with Special Olympics.

Some of those benefits include an insight to working with people with disabilities, learning their true capabilities and understanding that though they are labeled as 'disabled' they can still accomplish a great many things.

Maybe you could look into volunteering with Special Olympics, maybe help coaching for the current bowling team in your area?? Check it out!! As you said, the rewards are many, not to mention the FUN!!! Cheryl Z.

It is quite encouraging to read of such accomplishments. I too have a special friend that brings light into my life. Almost every time I perform my friend Everett is there to support and even help with his Elvis impersonations, a performance that can not be described only experienced. At 34 even though he contends with the strain of Down's Syndrome he is a delight to all who know him.

I’m confident you have experienced the same joy.

Readytoescape-yes, Justin brings me tremendous joy. He does impersonations as well-his favorite is Bill Cosby's stand up routine. He makes me laugh alot, that is one of the reasons I love him so! Thanks for commenting.
