Kansas City Jazz
Jazz History
18th and Vine Jazz District
The Black Archives of Mid-America at 2033 Vine Street is a tribute to African American excellence in and around Kansas City, especially in the rich district of jazz and the arts at 18th and Vine.
The area around 18th & Vine in downtown Kansas City was the site of the development of Jazz music, especially from the 1930s - 1950s. Charlie "Bird" Parker learned to play saxophone here and became famous. His instrument is in the nearby American Jazz Museum, along with exhibits commemorating other jazz legends like Count Basie and others that performed in New Orleans as well as Kansas City and St. Louis.
Another interesting place here is the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. It is a tribute to the players of the Negro League Baseball Players Association. These leagues were successful until 1847, when Jackie Robinson signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers, a formerly all white team.
The Gem Theater Cultural and Performing Arts Center is nearly 100 years old and still used for the performing arts, including drama, dance, and multi-media.

US History - Santa Fe Trail
In 1857, the Santa Fe Trail began in the East in Kansas City MO. Today the site of the old stage coach station is the yard of Santa Fe Bible Church.
Because horses needed water along the Santa Fe Trail, Kansas City provided such water and became known as the City of Fountains in the late 1800s. In 1900, Kansas City leaders built drinking fountains for people as well all around the city's downtown area. Through the 20th century, additional large public water fountains were built and dedicated as memorials to important individuals and groups. Only Rome, Italy now has more city fountains than does Kansas City anywhere in the world.

In a long-term ongoing projrect, the Native American communites of Kansas City MO have partnered with those of Oklahoma to communicate with Native troops stationed overseas during peace and war time.
PROJECT MOCCASINS FOR NATIVE TROOPS
In a centuries-old old tradition, as a Native Warrior rode away from his family and village to enter a battle, he wore newly made moccasins. These fresh moccasins were endowed with the responsibility to guide his feet safely, either home or into the next life. The National Native Veterans Association of Oklahoma has organized this project and will preserve it for as long as Native Troops are ever stationed outside of North America.
Moccasins for the project are handmade well but inexpensive by artisan volunteers, packaged in red flannel, and sent to Native Troops with the goals of providing at least one pair of moccasins to each person. Information is available or you can request moccasins be sent to a serviceman or -woman at National Native American Veterans Association, Email : National Office. If you know Canadian First Nations military overseas,, email the NNAVA and ask if they can include them. Donations are accepted.

As always good writing and interesting article about jobs.
Patty--very interesting article. I'm from outside of KC, lived in the area all my life and you mentioned things I didn't even know were here! The real scoop on the economic atmosphere here--lay-offs, threatened lay-offs and businesses closing all over the place. Only things that seem to be thriving are banks, hospitals and insurance companies. You listed Sprint but they are probably the top company here laying off people. Of course, they probably had to to make sure they had enough money to pay the severence package for their CEO when he left.
Again, nice Hub!
Thanks for visiting my Hub, Trsmd, courtsantos, and RUTHIE17. For those looking for work in KCMO --
http://www.Job-Hunt.org right now 4/27 lists 15, 828 jobs open in Kansas City, many of them healthcare related.
Several pages are listed at Craigslist: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/jjj/ and short term gigs are at http://kansascity.craigslist.org/ggg/
That's pretty bad when a company must lay people off in order to pay a CEO a severance package. There is certainly a lot of busines in the health and medical fields and financial services, as you say. In fact USA will need approx. another 1,000,000 Nurses before the decade ending in 2010 is out.
Here's Sprint jobs in Kansas City as of Sunday 4/27 on http://www.indeed.com -Within a 25 mile radius of the city itself, over 11,000 jobs and 800+ are at $40,000 and higher salaries.
I've linked an RSS Feed for folks looking for Sprint jobs. Thanks for the infromation Ruthie17!
Your welcome, Patty. The bad thing about the job situation in this area is, like you said, there's plenty of positions listed in the healthcare industry and sales positons in many areas but regular "blue-collar" work is hard to come by right now. Hope is gets better soon, but I really doubt it will happen.
Just got home from our daughter's birthday dinner. Shhhh--(looking over shoulders both ways) don't tell anyone but she turned 40 today. Lucky her, she looks about 30 and acts like a perky, happy 18 year old! Good Lord, where does the time go?
Anyway--asked everyone at dinner what was the biggest city in Missouri and out of 10 people, 9 said St. Louis. LOL--nothing like knowing the facts about the place where you live!
That's exactly true - I could not find much in the way of blue collar jobs; however, there is a trend toward green industries and the blue collar job is to be replaced by "green collar", so we will see what happens. I'll read more about that so I cna list some specific links for retraining in that direction. Let me know if you see anything - also about upcoming layoffs - and we'll keep this thread going.
Happy birthday to your daughter - and to YOU for having such a wonderful one - she gets her vitality from you, no doubt!
Thanks so much for visiting; you bring an energy that I like to see.
Cheers!
Patty
its always been my dream to own my own business. I want to be the boss.
Patty, What are your qualifications? Are you in the Human Resources field? You are excellent in your hubs, keep up the good work. I am passing the article on to friends.
Nan: I worked in Workforce Development and taught related classes for over a decade and continue to do resumes and employment portfolios.
