This type of performance is also known as Karagam which is the popular folk dance of Tamil Nadu.It is derived from Mariamman, the goddess of health and rain. The dancers usually dress in sarees and i have also seen some of them with blouse and another churidhar pants like costume. It is also known as Kudakoothu in some places.
