Sebelius gets things done

Kathleen Sebelius could be the 2016 Presidential candidate best equipped to eliminate the deficit and reduce bureaucratic hoohaa, if her past record is any indication. In 2005, Time Magazine named Sebelius one of the five best governors in America. Already, she was well on her way toward eliminating the $1.1 billion deficit present in 2002 when she took on the governorship of Kansas.

Sebelius accomplished this miracle by "uncovering more than $159 million in wasteful (government) spending and producing over $1 billion in budget savings."

Sebelius has a reputation for turning bureaucracies around. As Kansas Insurance Commissioner, she transformed an entrenched good-’ol boy insurance network into a consumer-friendly agency as well as "cleared roadblocks and red tape" for the elderly who were trying to work their way through the Medicare maze. Managing all this earned her a place on Governing Magazine's list of "Public Officials of the Year" in 2001.

Trinity Board of Trustees Chair Peggy O’Brien- an old friend from Sebelius's college days- says, "(Kathleen) is that rare combination of a strong leader with deep convictions and an open-minded person with a gift for being a good listener. It is a rare and wonderful trait, especially in politics.”

Governor Sebelius put her listening skills to good use while considering how to remain competitive in a global marketplace. She traveled Kansas, meeting with CEOs, entrepreneurs and local business owners, listening to their ideas and their concerns.

Results of this venture included:

  1. Authorization of a Post Secondary Technical Education Authority intended to prepare competent workers for a global economy;
  2. the Kansas Bioscience Authority, "empowered to invest up to $580 million over 10 years in start up businesses and incubator projects in biosciences"
  3. A bond authorization worth $33 million which was "key to persuading aircraft giant Cessna to locate its new manufacturing facility for its new line of Columbus business jets in Kansas."

Her efforts worked. "We are pleased to be recognized by one of the nation's premier site location publications," Gov. Sebelius told the Wichita Business Journal in May of 2008. "Kansas' top-10 ranking by Site selection Magazine is a testament to our attractive business environment, and our target audience is taking note."

Sebelius has also prioritized education in Kansas- good schools equal good jobs and a growing economy- and she receives high marks for her bipartisan approach to governing, a characteristic that helps tremendously in a state that generally votes Republican. She was reelected as Governor in 2006, with 57.8 percent of the vote. Her Republican opponent received 40.5 percent.

Kathleen Gilligan Sebelius was born in 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio and studied political science at Trinity Washington University in Washington D.C.. She went on to receive her Masters of Public Administration degree from University of Kansas in 1977.

“My father was involved in politics for about 25 years from the time I was 5,” she told Elizabeth Palmer of trinitydc.edu. “In spite of the fact that I have been exposed to politics for most of my life, it really was more about community service. My Dad was always committed to that as a way to give something back, make a difference, to work on issues you cared about..."

Thanks for this profile. Gov. Sebelius comes across as so sensible and effective. With her record as governor, she just may be the 2012 or 2016 presidential candidate. Her intelligent response to the state of the union address 2008 inspires my vote. I encourage her to remain in her office to the end if her watch, and then entr the national arena. President-Elect Obama may invite her to a cabinet position. What will she do? Stay tunes, as they say.

I hope she's a good listener, 'cause she could put the whole nation in to a coma.

A president needs, among other things, to excite and lead with charisma.

She seems to need some neck work.

Yes, boogiemouse, astute as usual... she has been criticized for being a tad boring, lol  But look at her record!  She's earned bragging rights other governors only dream of.  Call her methodical, yet effective.  She was on Obama's list for VP picks.  Neck work, eh?  How would you assess her chakra level?

vitaeb, sensible is a great word for Sebelius.  Could we even say synonymous? I think the American public could go for substance over sound bites if 2012 or 2016 usher in more of the same Bail Out news we've heard this fall.  Fiscal responsibility and turning the economy around seem to be her forte, so maybe Obama is eyeing her for a cabinet post along those lines.  Although she has also done a lot for Education in Kansas.  So maybe he is considering her as his Education Czar.  Has he made any announcements today?

Sebelius is certainly an attractive person who gets results.

She is not welll known enough...and she does not bring any foreign policy experience to the ticket.

Well, she has 8 years to change that, lol! Give me some names, hubber. Which women have the foreign policy experience and the name recognition. I'd be happy to research them. Or link me to a Hub you write on the subject!

This video may not be an accurate assessment of her energy fields, as she is clearly not speaking freely. She sounds like she is reading a book. I watched a few other you-tube videos of her, but she sounds the same.

That said, my gut is that she is heart level, but is having energy drain from early life issues that she thought were abusive or in which she felt powerless. She has difficulty connecting her heart to her head due to this energy drain, and without her child energy being fully available, the energy trying to connect her heart and her head gets stuck in her throat, thus decreasing her "voice". When you listen to her, there is no joy, and no happy child. She says all the right things, but in near monotone. Sometimes these issues are dealt with by the person by trying to do good, as she clearly is, as if to prove their own value and heal the child through good deeds.

I like her, but she would never inspire like Obama, who has dealt with any such issues long ago, and can use his high chakra sourcing to inspire through hope, and not fear.

What do you think about that???

Boogiemouse says: 'cause she could put the whole nation in to a coma.A president needs, among other things, to excite and lead with charisma.'

Quite often charisma is mistaken for demagoguery. I'd rather have subtance and integrity, and Sebelius demonsrates these qualities. As for foreign policy experience, she strikes me as having the kind of intelligence desirable for handling such issues. What kind of experience did Rice have before going to Washington? Wasn't she an academic?

Boogiemouse  says:

Well said, vitaeb.

Didn't work out too well for Jimmy Carter, though.

IMHO, the best presidents were those that had a heavy dose of charisma, and had the ability to lead the herd blindly when substance and integrity were not enough. Self effacing humor in the tradition of Lincoln intrigues me, and somehow allows people to overlook obvious flaws that would hobble other presidents. I see that in Obama. I can't yet see that in Sebelius. Not enough info from the clips and story.

vitaeb, I am going to do a hub on Rice, but for now, here are some relevant bits of information from Wikipedia:

Carter Administration: Rice was an intern in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Reagan Administration:  Traveled to Kazakhstan on Chevron's behalf.  While an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

HW Bush Administration: Soviet expert on the United States National Security Council, having written her PhD dissertation on military policy and politics in Czechoslovakia.  Bush introduced her to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as the one who "tells me everything I know about the Soviet Union."

During the 1990s: Served as a consultant on the former Soviet Bloc for numerous clients in both the public and private sectors.

Here is an interesting critique of Rice written by the first African-American female member of the Directors Guild of America, Candace Allen:  http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2007/dec/05/usa.po

Boogie, fascinating.  Sounds a bit like me, lol.  So everyone has issues.   Obama operates at a high level, but is that an anomaly?  Have you done a reading on my other candidate, Whitman?  Why not write one for every candidate I introduce? I'd love it.  Really interesting to me, anyway.

BTW, I also enjoyed reading the boogie/vitaeb exchange. Your thoughts inspire me. What is IMHO?

Here's more on the Sebelius foreign policy question:  "Sebelius allies note that she has traveled extensively in her six years as governor, including trips to Israel, Egypt, Japan and China -- travel that belies any notion that she is simply a small-time, Plains-state governor with little interest or experience beyond the borders of the Sunflower State.  Even so, they acknowledge that her resume is almost entirely based on chief executive experience of the domestic sort."  http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/06/the_

IMHO: In my humble opinion.

I looked at the very short Whitman video, and immediately felt that this was a woman who could be trusted to follow her heart. I couldn't tell exactly how intelligent she was from the video, but I have to say she didn't come across as very "presidential". I'll keep my eyes and ears open for other stuff on her.

Presidential. What does this mean? I googled and found this opinion at https://service.thrivent.com/mboards/members/threa

"In the words of Supreme Court Justice Brennan, who said of pornography, 'I know it when I see it.' Seriously (sort of), Presidential is the calm eye in the hurricane. Appearing as if everything is under control. Being presidential is showing the right amount of the right emotion at the right time. A President assumes respect without seeming to demand it."

Is this what you mean, boogie?

I like Whitman a lot, but I'm moving on to Jodi Rell, Republican of CT. Stay tuned!

Rice disqualified herself by her mediocre to poor performance in the Bush administration as National Security Adviser and Secretary of State. Her history is one of going along, getting along, e.g., with the reckless, costly and counter-productive invasion of Iraq and with Bush's doctrine of preemptive war. She is a protege of George Shultz who also was a big supporter of using the military to project American power.

Sibelius is okay. However, Jennifer Granholm is a better public speaker and probably a bit brighter. Her reputation has suffered as governor from the ineptitude of the automobile companies which has put the Michigan economy in a deep hole.

Okay, sorry, I forgot what the hub reference was, and I figured you might want to fix it or something. I tried to click on the reference "Granholm Creates Jobs and Repairs Roads" but it didn't work.  I look forward to learning more about her.

I'm always tickled when "our" Kathleen gets noticed nationally, but then why wouldn't she? A Democrat who can handily win two terms as guv in a (supposedly) Republican state is not just a pretty face. Kathleen has shown time after time that she has no problem reaching across the aisle to get things done, and would be a great addition to Obama's administration.

Jama, thanks for your insights! How do you feel about Sebelius leaving mid-term to work with Obama in some capacity? What position do you think she would best fill? Always great to get feedback from someone in Kansas, the Sunflower State.

That's okay, Ralph.  Thought you might want to know.  How's Michigan weather today?  We are experiencing sunshine after an intense morning blizzard on Friday. Hey, how did that comment on Rice just pop up when you sent it 17 hours ago? Did I miss it? Regarding Rice, you could hold a majority opinion on Rice in this moment. But Reagan was pretty popular and Schultz was his man. I don't hear many blatant criticisms of the Reagan Administration- and I am listening carefully. He wasn't my guy.

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee  says:

Well of course we'd hate to "lose" her, but since term limits prevent a third (successive) term, we'd get over it. As for which position she could best fill, her talents are many and varied, so I can't think of one in particular that she'd be "best" at. But I must mention that she routinely talks with her hands, and must've been told to sit on them during the SOTU Democratic response. Therefore you did not see the "real" Kathleen, who's anything but "dull" or "boring".

Sebelius would be fantastic. I know Obama will do a good job, but there will be quite a deficit after 8 years, because he is a bit spending crazy. No one better than Sebelius to trim down some of the inevitable government waste and help reduce the deficit.
