Katy Perry - Indie's Answer to Avril?
67Unless you have been too busy attempting to determine which Jonas Brother has talent, you have made notice of Katy Perry. The contralto artist has been causing a stir on the pop scene, and it is refreshingly not because of any alterations to her chest or her recent bed partners. Despite her comparably unsuccessful career as a Christian artist under her given name Katy Hudson in 2001, her lyrics boast of many not so tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Such as, "I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf while jacking off listening to Mozart" featured on "You're So Gay". When asked exactly what she meant by "gay" (everyone is looking for a controversy), she stated "It's about those guys that wear the guyliner and use the flat-irons, and wear my jeans. I want to wear my jeans. Don't wear my jeans. ...or spend more time in the mirror than their girlfriends do. And I wrote it after being dumped. It was one of those relationships where the dumpage lasted longer than the actual relationship, unfortunately, and I just remember after finally, it was the last straw, like, kicking me out of the apartment and not coming back. I went back to my house, and I was a little upset. And I remember my roommate...I had this verse that I had been developing in my head, and I played it to her, and I was like, 'I don't know what to say in the chorus, he's just like so gay,' and she's like, 'Say that.' I'm like, 'OK. I'll say that!' It's taking the piss out of that emo scene." In several recent interviews Katy has made it clear that she is unafraid of backlash from the religious community. Let's hope she keeps that disposition as church billboards across America are plastered with "I kissed a girl. And then I went to hell". Madonna didn't seem offended as she stated that "You're So Gay" was in heavy rotation on her iPod. Who knows, it could be featured as the background tune for "Kabbalah on Tape". Her mildly lewd lyrics and edgier pop sound seem to be peeking the interest of even the most "indie" of hipsters. Ironically, most of the said hipsters fit the bill of the persona she takes down a few levels in her songs. She is also becoming quite the fashionista, sporting cherry red lipstick and neon rompers with pin-up curves. At last, an artist to bring the middle school girls out of the bathroom stalls and into the lunchrooms, even if they do decide to consequently enjoy each others curves. On an actual musical note, YouTube users can check out her acoustic performances which give a look into the backbones of the songs and her versatility. The next single out by Perry is expected to be "Hot N Cold", a great dance song, about the opposite sex. No one can be certain if Ms.Perry has staying power in todays indie pop scene. But, she has stated that she would be okay with just her fifteen minutes of fame because she's doing what she wants and can always look back on this. If anything, she can be praised for that, unlike other artists who sell themselves to make-up and fast-food companies in an attempt force feed themselves to the mindless masses of today's so discriminate consumer. Her album "One of The Boys" is making an impact in the charts and is hopefully just a small portion of what Katy has planned for us. If anything, at least it is distracting us from Christina Aguilera's VMA cameltoe.
