We flew into Sofia and stayed for a night in the Hotel Rodina, which is a 5* hotel and very reasonable priced. Good service and in the centre of Sofia. We rented a car which had excellent service and new cars. From there we drove to Kazanlak with breaks here and there.
When you visit the Kazanlak Valley you'll find a huge variety of many interests. It lies in the middle of Bulgaria at the foot of the Balkan Mountains.
The western part is wild and hilly. In the big forest is a variety of wildlife. Apart from hamsters, hedgehogs bats, hares and squirrels, you will find sloth, pole cats and wild boars. Bird species include a variety of doves, woodpeckers and wild geese. It is a bird watcher's paradise. You will also see Imperial eagles, falcons and peregrine falcons. The river contains pike, grey mullet, carp and sheat fish. A fisherman's dream.
If you want to do something for your health try a Public Mineral Bath which is 5 km from Kazanlak. Another one is in the village of Ovoshtnik. The mineral water is curing the central and peripheral nervous system, locomotory system and gastric complaints. There are also two mineral pools which are used in the summer. I can assure you it was an experience I won't forget. It was not only fun but also very rejuvenating.
If that isn't of interest to you or your family, the Sports and Recreational facilities will keep you on the go summer or winter. There are Ski lifts and runs and many chalets to stay in. The Koprinka Dam is popular in summer for fishing, water sports and its beach. When we were there we had very good weather and enjoyed the day there. Unfortunately, we only could spare a day because there was the forest, river and valley to see. The pine forest is popular for walkers, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. I can promise you that nobody will be disappointed or bored.
4 km from Kazanlak on a small airport there is a Parachutists' club which offers jumps to amateurs or team participants. Guides lead hiking, cycling, climbing and mountaineering tours in the area. There are also several football and basketball stadiums in and around Kazanlak, as well as swimming pools and recreational centres.
There is so much to do, interest and recreational wise, we couldn't include it all. It is impressive because the valley hasn't been overrun by tourism, so far.
It is such a beautiful country and people are so friendly.
