What the Immmune System Does

Basically the function of the immune system is to protect the body from viruses, bacteria, fungi, and all other harmful organisms that can enter our body. The breakdown of the immune system begins when toxins from the food we eat, the environment we live in and also a poor diet in general causes our systems to weaken and not function properly. When the immune system starts to weaken, our bodies are subject to fatigue and illness and it s very hard to ward off infections. The cells of the immune system are produced bythe thymus gland, spleen and other organs. The cells are carried throughout the body via the lymph system and to the lymph nodes. The nodes store the cells and help to create a barrier against infections settling in. What often happens is the immune cells become damaged when unstable oxygen molecules, which are known as "free radicals" become high in number, due to cigarette smoke, X-rays, alcohol, poor diet, and polluntants in the air. What needs to be done to rectify this is a healthy diet with vitamins that will strengthen the immune stystem by neutralizing the damaged cells.

Another factor in keeping the immune system up is routine exercise, even if it just a daily walk or jog. This will ensure good blood circulation so that the body will continuously get a plentiful supply of oxygen.

Specific Vitamins to Boost Immunity

The vitamins known as the antioxidants are C and E. What these vitamins do are stimulate immunity and protect the body against cancer by neutralizing the free radicals. Also Vitamin A strengthens the immune cells. The daily intake requirement of vitamin A is 1,000 RE; ususally found in just 1 carrot. For Vitamin C, about 60 mg or 1 orange. Lastly, Vitamin E consumption is about 10 mg or 2 tablespoons vegetable oil.

Herbal Stimulants and Humidity Levels

The following is a herbal immune booster that can be made and consumed daily.

3 carrots

1 apple

1 orange

1/2 beet

Just mix everything up in a juicer, seeds, peels and all; but it has to be a juicer. A blender will definitly not work. Drink and keep for only one day.A new batch should be made fresh everyday.

Indoor Humidity

If possible, try to keep the humidity level in your house somewhere between 30 to 50 percent. When you do this it doesn't allow the mucous membranes in the nose to dry out, thus protecting the cilia, the fine hairs that line the nose and act as barriers to keep germs from penetrating the body.

Thanks laringo - I can always stop by for awhile and learn something new.

Good point about the humidity. When we turn on the heat in these city apartments for the winter - too many people get sick from the dry heat. When I lived in Korea - it was standard to find in every home and office, during the winter, a humidifier.

Meanwhile - thanks for the immune boosting recipe! Will try it!

BkCreative, I appreciate you stopping by and reading my Hubs...I try to be helpful one way or another. One comment I want to add is that...it's really not costly to live a healthy life...all it takes is a small amount of dedication.

goldentoad....you've got to get busy with the health thing because when you get older, you'll wish you had(sorry for sounding like your mother) Seriously, just try to keep fruits and vegetables on hand for snacks and at least your diet will be on the right track.

Important and useful knowledge laringo. Something to keep in mind also; our obsession with creating artificial environments and limiting our exposure to the natural one also greatly weakens the immune system. Contracting and fighting off illness is how the system was built in the first place. Like any other function of the body if it isn't used it will atrophy. Too much sterility in life is as unhealthy as an excessive lack of cleanliness.

Great advice and I used to Juice everyday and somehow got away from it...maybe I will bring the juicer out again...I always have Organic foods here anyway...I also take 7 different kinds if seaweed (in a capsule) and have found a big difference in my health....although last year was bad...but that was caused from STRESS big time STRESS...

I also take many herbs  and do my workout MOST everyday...today I worked out by cleaning house, shopping pushing mom around the giant store (Costco) in a wheelchair with a basket, then taking her back and coming home and putting all the food away(the kids are coming on Wed.)so now I am tired out...

Back to my normal workout tomorrow...pronto...Thanks for the refreshner...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace

G-Ma, I used to take spirulina (seaweed) in a capsule a while back, but I must get to GNC and start taking it again, I just didn't like the taste, but I know it has great health properties. You're living the right way for a healthy life. I always try to do the same., but I'm far from perfect.
