Will you ever let a young child to give your newborn baby a bath? If you think it is not a big deal, hopefully my article can change your mind because I have heard all kinds of tragic incidents happening to newborn babies in the bath, like dropping, scalding, and drowning. These accidents should have never happened.
Keep Your Newborn Babies Safe (Part II) - Bath Time Safety
Never Allow A Child to Give Your Newborn A Bath. I know it may sound like a common sense but it happened to my friend's neighbor about 3 years ago. She was a mother of five, who assigned her eight-year-old daughter to give her newborn baby a bath. The mother supervised her daughter a few times before she let her do it alone. The decision turned out to be a tragedy. The eight year old accidentally poured too much soap in the water, which made the baby too slippery for her to handle, so she dropped the baby on the tile floor and the baby did not survive. This was a heart breaking tragedy that should have never happened.
Hold Your Baby at All Times. If you find your newborn too slippery, it may be a good idea to get a baby bathtub because it will make your job easier and it will also ease a lot of your worries.
No matter what, never leave your newborn baby unattended in the bathtub. Remember to support your infants with your hands at all times because newborn babies cannot support their own heads yet.
Use Warm Water Only. Remember newborn babies are very sensitive to temperature. Use the back of your hand to feel the temperature of the water; it should only be luke warm, not hot.
Be Calm. Newborn babies do not like bath because they don't like the changes in temperature. Do not let their crying disturb you and make you nervous. Just clean them well and do it quickly and safely. The calmer you are, the lesser chance there is for an accident.
Preparation is Everything. The more prepared you are, the safer it is for your babies, and the less disturbed they will get. Get the bathroom warm and water ready before you bring in your baby. Don't forget to have warm towels, lotions, diaper creams, diapers, and new set of clean clothes ready for your clean baby, so that you won't be running around stressed out trying to gather everything. Remember your baby is in tune with your emotions, when you are upset and stressed out he/she can sense it and it will upset him/her too.
When our son was brand new, we only gave him a sponge bath. I remembered the first time he had a bath, he was very upset when we took his clothes and diapers off, and he was even more upset when he felt the warm rag cleaning him. I was glad that my husband and I were cleaning him together; I didn't think I could do it on my own because I got very disturbed when he cried so intensely. The reason behind the crying is because newborns cannot regulate their bodies' temperature well, that's why they feel so vulnerable during their bath time.
