Barrister Arif Raza (2005) stated “We don’t have to agree with each other to stand up for the human rights of those with whom we disagree.” Today we have an opportunity to stand tall and demonstrate that fighting for human rights is only worthwhile when we fight it for the other, not just for ourselves. After this press release the Muslim and gay community united on the matter and overcame their conservative opposition. But in the United States there remains a strong opposition for various reasons. (Robert M. Baird, 2006)

Religion is a very traditional thing especially Catholicism, members of this group follow the bible which has been written decades ago. There are many things that this certain religion does not agree with in our society, for example abortion, contraceptives, and divorce.

All three of these things are legal in Canada and the U.S. despite the fact that some religions are against it. By this being said, the bible has absolutely no standing on Canadian. No one has the right to impose rules on anyone else, simply because of something they perceive to be a moral injunction mandated by the Bible. Also not everyone in the world follows the same religion, many religions such as the united way, accept and celebrate homosexual marriages (Andrew Sullivan, 2004). It is not justified to argue against same sex marriage by using religion as a defense. “War, Rape, Murder, Poverty, or Equal rights for gays; Guess which one of the southern Baptist convention is protesting?” This quote is very true, religious beliefs are usually about doing the right thing within their community, it is very frustrating how many religions put so much time and effort into the argument over same sex marriage when there are larger issues that are actually harmful that need to be dealt with. Marriage is a civil right. If you don’t want gay people to marry in your church, good for you. But you can’t say they can’t marry in your city.
