Keeping Cool in Singapore and Hong Kong
61Singapore and Hong Kong are one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and are famous for their fashionable, modern, and commercial cultures. The climate in both of these countries can range from dense rains showers and high humidity levels. Areas near the seaport regularly experience tidal wave storms, heavy lightning and thunderstorms, and monsoon-like weather. Despite all the water, the heat levels can reach record highs, and feel even more intense Keeping cool in either place can be challenging if you're not prepared, so be sure to pack these tips along with your light clothing!
1. Pack a raincoat in the Fall months. You'll need a light raincoat, and something that can slip off easily as the temperature rises.
2. Make sure all outdoor clothes are made of breathable materials. Linen and cotton are ideal, and lighter colors will help ward off excessive sun exposure.
3. Carry light bags. You'll be less likely to work up a sweat when you're not spending all your energy carrying extra items around in the sun!
4. Wear a hat. Choose a large-brimmed straw hat or cotton floppy. Sun visors are also helpful if you're near the water. Avoid baseball caps, since these can encourage your scalp to sweat.
5. Drink plenty of fresh water. Carry bottled water wherever you go to stay well hydrated.
6. Apply sunscreen regularly. Avoid skin damage and overexposure by making sure you're well-covered with sunscreen.
7. Use a sun umbrella. These lightweight accessories can help shield you on your walks in the park, as well as during waiting periods at the train station.
8. Wear sunglasses at all times. Eye protection from sun damage is especially important during the 10 a.m. -4 p.m. stretch when the sun is at it's highest.
9. Stay indoors during heat waves. Heat stroke can creep up on you, and moments when you feel dizzy or sick are signs
10. Eat plenty of water-based food. Hong Kong and Singapore have plenty of fresh fruit options, including coconut and other tropical fruits. Be sure to eat at least 2-3 servings per day.
11. Stay in shape. Take an early morning or late evening walk on a regular basis, and your body will naturally adjust to the heat. Heat stress disorder can be prevented with regular exercise and physical fitness.
12. Eat small meals. Avoid too much high protein food that can be difficult to digest. This can use up all your energy resources fairly quickly, and will make it difficult to stay cool.
13. Take a cool shower at the end of the day. Not only will this help you cool down naturally, but can help you relax.
14. Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol. These can be very damaging to your body's natural system, and will also lead to dehydration.
15. Take regular breaks. If you're walking or traveling in the sunshine for long periods of time, you may become tired quickly. Make a rest stop at a local café or eatery, and enjoy some local food and drink as a refreshment.
