What is kennel cough?

Kennel Cough or (infectious canine tracheobronchitis) is a desiese that any dog can catch when brought together in a group. The name 'kennel cough' is used to refer to this condition because of its regular occurance among groups of dogs in boarding kennels and in animal rescue shelters. The risk of developing a severe cough can be greatly reduced by having your dog vaccinated.

What is Kennel Cough, and how does it spread?

Kennel cough is a contagious respitory disease of dogs. Bordettella bronchiseptica is a major cause but other organisms may be involved, including canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus 1 and 2.

Boarding kennels can be a source of infection, particularly at peek holiday periods but individual dogs may also contract the disease from training classes, dog shows, neighbourhood dogs, popular dog walks, or other areas where close contact is unavoidable.

Unfortuntely kennel cough is transmitted on the breathe and your dog could be exposed to it by something as simple as a walk in the park. Indeed my own dog contracted it on a walk through the woods.

The Symptoms of Kennel Cough

Kennel cough may only last a few days, but it can persist for two to three weeks or longer. The cough is harsh and persistant, and usually dry, without producing any mucous.

The dog may gag or retch during a coughing bout as though it is trying to vomit or has something stuck in its throat.

The dog may appear very sorry for himself in his current condition and the coughing will persist through the night.

Preventing Kennel Cough

If your dog regularly comes into contact with other dogs, vaccination against kennel cough may be advisable.

For the most comprehensive protection against kennel cough your vet will need to administer the Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine into your dogs nose using a nasal applicator,

Proof of vaccine against kennel cough is required for many boarding kennels and other events such as dog shows and training classes. You may be refused entry if you are unable to show proof of vaccination. The treatment takes seven days to fully protect your dog.

If you think your dog has kennel cough

Consult a veterinary surgeon promptly.

Remember to book your appointment for the end of surgery and advise the staff that your dog is coughing. When you arrive at the practise, in order to avoid contaminating the waiting room you should wait in the car untill you recieve further instruction.
