Kids Crafts Ideas: Paint A Crocodile With Tea
Kid's Crafts are such fun, it is the easiest way to teach them many science lessons. This painting craft is fascinating and the kids will really love it.
Paint a crocodile is one of our kid's crafts ideas that is a science project as well. The kids learn about the staining power of the chemical tannin in the tea. They also learn that coffee has even more tannin. Then they learn about the bleaching power of lemon juice when they bleach patches on their painting with the lemon juice. This kid's crafts idea is therefore very suitable for homeschoolers and unschoolers. With time I'll be giving you more kid's crafts ideas that are crafts and science experiment all in one. Today's craft is a very visual one and kids that love art will really enjoy it.
You may also try paintings with other natural colorants. Why not try red cabbage juice for instance. For green you can use strong spicach juice etc. Experiment with what you have availble and you'll come up with many interesting ideas.
Because boiling water is used in this craft, it must be done under adult supervision.
What you need for this craft:
- At least 10 teabags
- 3 Heaped table spoons of instant coffee
- The juice of one lemon
- 4 Paintbrushes
- Thick white paper
- A brown felt tipped pen
- Water
- 2 Mugs
- 2 Teaspoons
- White paint
How to do this craft:
- Boil about 1½ mugs water.
- Place the teabags in one of the mugs.
- Leave the tea until it is cold.
- Carefully fill the mug with water.
- Place the coffee in the other mug.
- Pour about 1" of water on the coffee and stir to dissolve.
- Leave the coffee to cool.
- When the tea is cold, take the teabags out.
- Using the tea as your paint, paint a crocodile on your white paper. (If you do not want to draw a crocodile you can obviously draw any picture of something that is predominantly brown)
- Let your painting dry.
- Now, using the tea again, add patterns on your crocodile to make darker patches for a more realistic look.
- Let your painting dry once again.
- Using a clean brush, paint some dots with the lemon juice on the darker patches.
- Paint the eyes white with your white paint.
- Using yet another clean brush, use the coffee to add details to your painting such as the teeth and claws.
- Once again your painting has to dry completely.
- When the painting is dry, outline the whole painting with a brown felt tipped pen.
Your painting is now complete. Maybe you can think of other ways to use what you have learned about tea, coffee and lemon juice today. Have fun with this craft!

Kids’ Craft Ideas – Balloon Piggy Bank
This free kids’ craft idea makes a great piggy bank that can be used for ages. It’s designed to have a money slot but no door to open, so you may need to saw it in half when your child wants to get at his or savings!
What you need for this kids’ craft idea:
- A small balloon
- An empty egg carton
- Old newspapers
- Wallpaper paste or homemade flour and water glue
- Masking tape
- Pink and black poster paint
- A pink (or black) pipe cleaner
- A sharp knife (for adult use)
- Several days drying time (this is not a kids craft for the impatient!)
Blow up the balloon to roughly the size you want your piggy bank. It needs to be large enough so that the individual sections of the egg carton can become the pig’s legs.
Tear lots of strips of newspaper about an inch wide and dip them in glue then layer over the balloon. You will need at least three layers, and it’s important to let each layer dry overnight, so you can come back to this kids’ craft idea each day for a while!
Once you have enough layers, leave the pigs body to dry thoroughly for a few days. Put it somewhere nice and warm to speed up the process, but not directly onto a heater or radiator or it will dry unevenly and may crack or become misshapen.
When the body of the pig is completely dry, pop the balloon and pull it out. The little hole where the balloon comes out will be where you will put his tail.
Cut your egg carton into sections. Four sections will be the legs and one will be the snout of the pig. Tape them on securely in the correct positions. Your pig is now starting to take shape!
Twist your pipe cleaner into a pig’s tail and insert it into the hole where you pulled the balloon out. Use masking tape to secure it in place. Paint your pig pink. Use several coat of paint if needed. When dry, use the black paint to add eyes and nostrils.
Use the sharp knife (adult help here please!) to cut a slot in the top of the piggy bank through which to insert your money!
This free kids’ craft idea is fun and easy and a great opportunity to teach your youngster about saving money.

Hi, thanks, it is always fun to get something different for the kids to do
I really like the paint the crocodile project too. I can't wait to try it with the boys. It sounds so fun.

Hi Magriet.
I just love the paint a crocodile project. Not only does it derive it's colors from natural ingredients but it means that I can have a cup of coffee while I'm supervising the kids!
