Kids go through many different stages in their lives, but the four main ones are baby, toddler, child and teenager. Each one of these phases in a childs development brings with it unique challenges, and as parents we are expected to ride the waves as best we can, and try and keep our relationship with them intact. On a more material level, each one of these phases brings with it decorating challenges as well. I'd like to discuss with you kids curtains and how the choice will differ depending on the stage that your child is currently at.

Babies are easy; anything with bright colors is going to be great for a baby, as it will help stimulate their brain development. Some people will tell you that bright colors in a nursery will affect your child’s sleeping patterns, but I have never experienced this myself, I tend to think that if a baby's going to sleep, then they will sleep regardless of the environment they are in. One thing that you can do, however, is make sure that the curtains you hang in your nursery are able to block out the light during the middle of the day.

Toddlers Kids Curtains

Once your baby starts learning how to walk, the biggest deciding factor when it comes to curtains will be strength and durability. In this stage of a child’s life, their one goal is to make as much mess as possible, and wreck as many things as they can along the way. For this reason, vinyl is a great material to look at during the toddler years. It is hard to kill, and easy to clean. As far as designs go, choosing something vaguely educational like the alphabet or animals will help their development.

After being a terrible two and three, your child will start to discover interests and hobbies as they commence their path to self discovery. At this stage you should start to allow your child some input into the design of curtain they would like in their room. Boys love soccer motifs and motorbikes, while girls really enjoy shades of pink and purple. This is of course a generalisation, and you need to have an understanding of your child’s interests in order to make a good choice.

The teenage years are a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and you need to give your young adult a lot more say in their decor. Their room becomes their private getaway during these years, and allowing them to decorate the way they want, even if it's all in black, will help them to see that you are showing them respect and allowing them some freedom in their lives.

Each one of these phases in a child’s life is exciting, scary and exhilarating. As a parent it is these changes that define our family’s lives. As you can see, your choice of curtain will depend a lot on your individual child’s personality and current stage of development, but there is no need to settle for a set of cheap mini blinds for your child’s bedroom, when there is so many different styles to chose from.

I've never encountered a blog on home decorating that took the kids' formative years into account. Good stuff you have here. I like the simplicity of the criteria you laid out - blocks out the light, easy to clean, colourful. Good hub. I'm into home improvement myself.
