Kindle: Great Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device
63There really should be some kind of commitment to limit the actual scores only for actual customers. I am not even a beta tester, but a real person who ordered this item immediately and get it today!
On balance, I would say it's pretty amazing. Small Form Factor, fantastic legibility - even outside in a very bright light. But I am not quite there yet sold.
1st I try it now in my second home in Vermont, and "Whispernet" is not working here. Unfortunately, this means I have to download tracks on my computer and then transferred to the device. No biggie, but a nuisance. So much for supply eNewspaper in remote areas! I think Amazon is misleading and implies that Whispernet works everywhere. 2nd The screen, while readable, it is actually quite small. In practice this means that you are away click on the next page button with a kind of video-game intensity, as each "page" has not nearly the amount of text that an average paperback does. I could get used to it over time, but it feels right now. 3rd Because of the constant next page click focus more on the speed reading as "curling with an eBook before the fire way of reading". Large companies for the person who needs to read the latest pablum about how successfully in the economy, etc., while in aircraft. Not good for the former English majors (like me) who like to enjoy. Enjoy pages in the books - it is hard to enjoy and at a time that you just read, if only a paragraph or on any screen, and want to click click to get on with it! 4th I am already feeling guilty not add to my collection of physical books, not in a position to secure a book to someone else, etc. (Then again, I feel about this kind of music that I allow iTunes - I still prefer the physical CD, even if only to read!), but it seems to large ephemera - books, you probably do not want to the other books you should read if and away. The problem is that I am a book lover - and if you are a book lover, you know, that it's not just the content, but also about the physicality of a book weighs in your hands. Fortunately, I am a tech-lover, I love my computer, so that I might get through this nostalgia, but I am a reading on this device, I am definitely missing some physical turning pages. And I could not IMAGINE surrender to the pleasure of a physical newspaper. Indeed, the idea of clicking from page to page to page to page to page to read the New York Times would drive me mad quiet. 5th If you spend time serious look at the store Kindle You will be amazed how much limited, it is true. But because Amazon will certainly change what Amazon is to books like iTunes is the music. But in the meantime, it is definitely a poor choice. And for me, many of the books that I buy, I would never want, in electronic form - photography books simply do not cut it in this format, for example!
So with all this, why did I buy it? And why am I considering? Well, it is fantastic that immediate gratification in what one for him - at least not in those areas where Whispernet works. I just love to think a title, and with him the next few minutes, how can I do with my music for iPhone and iTunes. As soon as I come back home in Boston - where I expect Whispernet will actually work - I know, I love that aspect.
I also like the idea of travelling with a small device, instead of my usual six books (even if I want to bring the six are probably not yet Kindle).
But mostly I bought it, and it may be easy to hold because it is a glimpse into the future. In my book, that every cent! And I am him four stars, if only to encourage more pioneers to try, because the more we buy, the more titles we will be (eventually) the ability to download.
And THAT is a good thing! ;-)
UPDATE: Well, I have two days with him now, and I am about the return. The screen size is only TO small to all content without constant continuity page. Clicking on the view, mechanical (dare I say cheezy?), And is quite annoying loud. I miss the opportunity to absorb a page of information at a time - the shows, I would say, maybe half a page of a normal book per screen (based on my word counting - YMMV). The fit and processing of the device is beginning to wear on me - I have their backs to double check the serial number, and the back pieces no longer fit flush. There is precious little elegance of the design - no one, really. For the price, I would expect quiet side clicks, fine fit and workmanship everywhere, and a better feeling item. The cover for the device is ill-fitting and bulky - clearly an afterthought. I DID actually getting wireless to work after I left Vermont and went in New Hampshire - and the immediate satisfaction was really very cool - but I do not think I can stand that tiny tiny screen. If you want a quick and voracious reader, go with the crazy side Click! I am him another day.
UPDATE 2: Well, it's growing on me again. I have several books Gutenberg dowloaded on my computer free, and then Kindle. Very cool. Sat in a cafe and ordered and received the New York Times, sample chapters, plus two more books. Did some contextual search for definitions, etc. I can tell you that the wireless aspect of this thing is totally killer! Maybe I can use the design aspects goofy? And today, the conversion to a "real" book, I have to keep all upset by it with both hands, hold the pages, and so on. I tell you, the thing is functionally genial - except for the small size of the screen, click the hellish noise, and so on. But the fit and processing of the matter is a bit shocking, really. Ir is a poorly designed machine that works really good looks, but also the kind of embarrassing! But I am learning to love it - like an ugly duckling!
UPDATE 3: I am addicted! Since I have more time with him, I discovered that I do clicking sound to a minimum, by clicking on the outer edge of the buttons instead in the direction of the centre. That makes it much quieter. Even the cover is not ill, when you find out right, as the device is in its interior. With the cover makes me less likely to inadvertently pages. The Kindle is also one of the things that looks better covered! ;-) I also loving Instant satisfaction! And I am loving to be able to re-read classics (free!) Gutenberg that I might not want to buy, but also really want to experience again.
Bottom line? It's killer! I am loving it!
It's a keeper!
