Kinds of Psychiatric Treatments

Treatments for mental disorders can vary per condition. A person can have more than one kind of mental disorder, therefore it is common that a person will experience symptoms of more than one kind of disorder. Psychotherapy and Somatotherapy are the two general treatments used in psychiatric treatments, some patient receive both kinds of treatments.



Psychotherapy is used mainly for mental illness that is diagnosed as psychological in origin. It includes all techniques that depend on interpersonal relationships and emotional reeducation, rather than on chemical or physical treatment.

Somatotherapy is a treatment of mental disorder with the use of medications and psychosurgery.

1. Forms of Psychotherapy Treatments:

a. Psychoanalysis - In this treatment Psychoanalyst help the patient discover, understand and deal with underlying motives and conflicts.

b. Hypnotherapy. Hypnoanalysis is a form of hypnotherapy, combining psychoanalysis with hypnotic techniques.

c. Group Therapy - treatment of mental patients as a group, under the direction of a psychiatrist or psychologist. By sharing to one another their problems and interacting to one another emotionally under psychologist guidance, patients recover more quickly than when treated individually.


Types of Group Therapy:

  • Psychodrama - patients create and act out roles with spontaneous dialogue.
  • Play therapy - it is mainly used for young children whose problems are more easily acted out in play fantasy than discussed.
  • Family therapy - in these treatment members of a family are encouraged to communicate openly with one another to resolve whatever issue that is causing the patient's problem.
  • Milieu therapy - is a type of group therapy often used in institutions. Therapist tries to structure the patient environment so that every activity and social interaction is as therapeutic as possible.

d. Behavior Therapy - therapist focuses on a patient's observable behavior and tries to help the patient control it better.

e. Humanistic Therapy - a treatment that is focus on the importance of self-actualization and the process of fulfilling one's potential. Therapists help patients become aware of their strengths and abilities.

Somatotherapy is a treatment of mental disorder with the use of medications and psychosurgery.

2. Somatotherapy's two main methods of treatments:

a. Chemotherapy. This treatmentuses drugs to alter the functions of the body. In psychiatric treatment chemotherapy is usually combined with psychotherapy. Drugs use on chemotherapy:

  • Anti-anxiety drugs or minor tranquilizers - used to relieve worries and tension.
  • Antipsychotic drugs or major tranquilizers - used to relieve delusions and hallucinations.
  • Antidepressant drugs - used to counteract depression.

b. Physical Therapy. This treatment uses physical techniques to treat illness. Physical therapy used in psychiatric treatment includes:

  • Electroshock therapy. In this therapy an electric current is passed through the brain producing a convulsive seizure. This therapy is used mainly to treat severe depression.
  • Psychosurgery - is a type of brain surgery, it is use to relieve extreme forms of mental illness that do not show improvement under other kinds of treatment. Psychosurgery is rarely used because it impairs many of the higher brain functions.
