If you're remodeling your kitchen or designing a new one, you need to decide what type of cabinets will be in your kitchen. There are many types and styles to choose from, and you'll want to find a design that will be beautiful as well as functional. The first step in choosing a kitchen cabinet design is selecting a layout for your cabinets. Then you need to choose a style, including color and design. Here is a walkthrough of the process.

Take a look at this guide to saving BIG on kitchen cabinets for some techniques for getting great looking cabinets for way less money.  It sure helped me when I remodeled my kitchen.

The first step in choosing from the many kitchen cabinet designs is to figure out how your cabinets will fit in with the rest of your kitchen. If you're designing a new kitchen, you have less of a problem since you can just design around your chosen cabinets. This is a great position to be in!

If you're remodeling, you have to be more careful. You'll need to choose a cabinet layout that fits in your kitchen, one that is aesthetically pleasing, and one that is functional. Moreover, you'll have to do all this with the constraints imposed by the existing kitchen and its layout. You probably won't be able to easily change the position of the sink, for example. This step can be difficult, and it might turn out that the cabinets you'd really like for your kitchen just won't work out.

Kitchen Cabinet Layout

To find a good layout for your new kitchen cabinets, you need to take in to account many factors. The cabinets you end up with need to be beautiful and functional, and sometimes there is some tension between the two. Here a few things to consider:

  • How do the cabinets fit in with your existing kitchen fixtures? You might choose the finish of your cabinets, for example, by matching it to parts of the kitchen that are not being remodeled. (Most kitchen cabinet designs feature a choice of finishes.) You want to make sure that your cabinets match the rest of the kitchen.
  • How do the cabinets fit in with the rest of the house? Many houses have a kitchen that opens up to another room. Consider how your new cabinets will match with the rest of the space. For example, wood veneer might look strange next to a flat color finish.
  • What color will your cabinets be, or what kind of finish do you want? Make sure the cabinets you're looking at are available in that color.
  • Consider the size of your kitchen. A small kitchen needs special attention. Will you have enough space to fit everything you want to put in cabinets? Some creativity is required to figure out how to use the space in a small kitchen effectively.
  • Consider your size. If you're a person of small stature, make sure the cabinets you're getting don't make things inconvenient for you. Remember: you're remodeling, so put the cabinets where you want! You might move the cabinets down a few inches so that items on the lowest shelf are easily accessible to you. Make sure you get a tape measure and do some tests before you commit to a kitchen cabinet design.
  • What will you be storing in the cabinets? You don't have to figure out exactly where everything will go, but have a general plan. You probably want a cabinet for the dishes and cups, for example, and one for bowls and other cooking supplies. Be sure that you can fit all you want and have a little space left over.

Kitchen Cabinet Style

Once you have an idea of how you want your cabinets laid out, you can start thinking about the style. There are lots of things to think about here. Cabinets are available with solid doors, glass doors, and even no doors at all. The finish might be oak, birch, beech, mahogany, a flat color, or a gloss finish. What kind of cabinets you get will depend on your taste and the style of the existing kitchen. Let your imagination go wild.

Choosing from the many kitchen cabinet designs is a big step. You'll have these cabinets for a long time, so you want to choose a layout that is beautiful and functional. Give some thought to how you'll use the cabinets, where you want them to be, and how you want them to look.
