Designing Your Kitchen Layout for Easier Cooking

The modern day kitchen over the last twenty years, has evolved from a simple, common, one wall kitchen design layout, to one of the most important areas within the home. Today, kitchen designers are often commissioned to make this part of the home, as functional, practical, as well as highly decorative as possible, given space limitations. The popularity of the different cooking shows on television, demonstrating proper cooking techniques, offering healthy alternatives through the use of colorful television personalities, while at the same time promoting  brand name loyalty, for certain cooking products or accessories, has significantly contributed to the way we think about kitchens today.

It is true of course, that the aim of the celebrity chef, as well as the amateur cook in your family, is to have easy access to ingredients, tools and cook food simultaneously, while at the same time, being able to store items as necessary or with little or no effort. Having a hectic schedule to begin with, requires to be as efficient as possible in whipping up gourmet meals, within a relatively short period of time. However, simply reorganizing utensils, accessories, or the cupboard for your immediate needs may be in the short term helpful, but not sufficient. A kitchen design layout must take into consideration fast preparation, a cooking section. the refrigerator, the stove, the dishwasher, storage location and if space permits, a serving area.

Small kitchen layouts, such as the one wall model, is ideal for apartment dwellers who can setup everything they need including cabinetry on one side and are able to reach for ingredients, bowls or cutting boards, with relative ease. The sink becomes the centerpiece of this particular setup. The L-shaped model, may be more appealing to homeowners who spend quality time in the kitchen and require more room for storage. This type, is in constant demand and is very space efficient, but also more convenient for individuals to access items, without having to resort to putting on their running shoes. Although the layout itself does allow for dishes to be prominently displayed, as they are being prepared, maintaining rhythm for the chef, is one major advantage.

Think Through Your Design to Prevent Mistakes Later

The island layout, is more suitable for large homes with ample space, that involves having an island, where prep work is conducted on the surface, while the bottom section, serves as additional storage. Additionally, the island is large enough to dine upon, which can be quite a treat for small family dinners.

There are many kitchen layout ideas, many of which are customized to the needs and budget of the homeowner. It's important to consider that aesthetics do contribute to a kitchen looking better and having expensive components or material installed, may make it more desirable, but placing a higher priority on functionality, should be the best course of action. A truly, ideal kitchen design layout should to the very least, be personalized to the individual who will be spending the most time in it. Separating the preparation, as well as cooking areas from the stove or refrigerator, while allowing more room between all appliances, make go a long way in creating a suitable setup, that can tackle a variety of cooking challenges.

A customized layout for the average consumer, should address not just basic needs, but also long term goals. Meaning, upgrading multipurpose equipment, accommodating larger refrigerators, adding more cabinets, setting up a bigger serving area, next generation gadgets or expanding storage space, should all be taken into consideration, when thinking about the future. A growing family, frequent guests, periodic visits from the in-laws, special occasions, may call for implementing the above suggestions in the years to come and taking the time to visualize an appropriate layout now, may be a good idea.
