The Basics Of Kitchen Stools

The kitchen stool is a great instrument for high counters, kitchen islands or tall bistro style tables. When considering your kitchen stools you want to keep with the style of your kitchen for the most part. They can be used to create a very unique feel to your kitchen space while still serving their basic seating function. Keeping with the style of your kitchen doesn’t mean being exact. You just don't want them to look out of place. They are made in virtually every style for every décor, so finding a style that you like won't be a problem. One thing that makes them enticing for the kitchen area is that because they come in so many styles it's easy to find a set that enhances the aesthetic appeal of an eat-in kitchen.

But style shouldn't outdo comfort. Finding a set that is comfortable to sit in is almost more important than finding a set that doesn’t look out of place. Consider height as well. If you're purchasing to match a table, make sure the stools don't sit too high or too low. You want enough room to move your legs without appearing dwarfed by either the seat or the table. For convenience, most kitchen bar stools and tables can be purchased as a set. Regardless of style, make sure you have the room enough for the number of stools you need. Also consider materials and how much time you will have to spend cleaning them. Some don't require any maintenance, while others need some TLC often.

Some Styles of Kitchen Stools To Consider

Traditional Kitchen Bar Stools

These are perfect for formal or conservative styled kitchens. They will have arms and might swivel. Most will be made of heavier woods like oak or cherry. A very traditional look will have leather cushions.

Modern Kitchen Counter Stools

As with all modern furniture, a sleek design plays a central role in the kitchen counter stool. Often it is made of metal in a polished chrome look. Others will be made of multiple materials or a wood/metal combo. Legs might be shaped in a V as opposed to the typical vertical leg style of the traditional stool.

The Retro Kitchen Stool

Vinyl stools that swivel might take you back to the diner days of the 1950s. These are still a very popular style in local diners today, but can look great in your kitchen. Most of these will be backless.

Exotic Kitchen Stools

For something a little more out of the ordinary you might go for something made of bamboo or rattan. Sometimes the metal kitchen stool will have shapes cut out of the back rest.

Bistro Stools

These kitchen counter stools can bring out an elegant bistro aesthetic to your kitchen. Most have slender metals arms or are made a cherry. They are stylish and very modern.

Sizing Up Your Kitchen Counter Bar Stools

Since all tables and eating areas are of different heights, you'll need to find the right height chair to fit your kitchen. Unless you bought a set your stools will need to be sized properly. Stools used to be a standard thirty inches. But as more home owners have customized their homes, kitchen eating areas have changed to fit personal design. Regardless of your table height, you want to make sure your stools provide enough leg room. This means they should be about 12 to 15 inches lower than the bottom of the table top. It's a simple rule to follow and should accommodate any style of table you are matching to. Sometimes you will be fortunate enough to find a kitchen counter stool with an adjustable height.
