My New Herb Garden
What kind of kitchen witch am I if I don't even have an herb garden? But I've been putting it off for a few years because our building kept changing owners.
After watching a few nutrition shows on TV and refreshing my memory of which herb does what, and doing some research in the book the Perricone Promise, we set off to the nursery for herbs. After visiting Armstrong Gardens and Lowe's and spending about $60. we had about a dozen herbs, a big planter, potting soil, and so on. Half the herbs went into the container and the rest will go in the ground. Fortunately, all but two of the herbs had the same growing needs. The other two were mint which I'm sure will be quite happy in pots in the shade next to the hose fixture that drips every time I turn on the hose.
Much to my delight I found a silvery curry plant the likes of which I've never seen before. I can't wait to see how that one grows.
I'm also happy to see that Wikipedia has a wealth of information on the history, cultivation and uses of many herbs.
So if memory serves me well, I bought spearmint and variegated pineapple mint, rosemary and trailing rosemary, oregano and trailing variegated oregano, two kinds of sage, curry, two types of thyme, and lemon basil. But it's almost dark so I won't do photos today. I got the planter potted tonight, but the rest will have to wait until tomorrow. They all got a good watering and hopefully the snails won't find them in one night.
I still want to plant nasturtiums and calendulas both of which are edible and add color to salads.
Meanwhile visions of handmade rosemary soap, herbal jelly, herbal vinegar, natural dyes, and prosperity pouches are dancing like sugarplum fairies in my head.
Update: I just got all the photos uploaded. If you use any of these herbs I'd love to here how you use them.
