Kittens - Help, I Found a Kitten, What Should I Do
73
Of all the wheel-wells in all the cars, all down the street, she had to climb into ours.
Ajax heard her first, ten o'clock at night, mewing and hollering outside on that dark, sloppy night. We poured out of the house to investigate, probably scared her, and brought her into the house.
She seemed so delicate, mewing loudly. I guess she was mourning the loss of her mother and siblings. Maybe she'd been dumped. Maybe a car passed, the occupants on a sad voyage of kitten abandonment, saw a light on, a door open, maybe they did the right thing.
Somebody suggested the SPCA. Sorry. Maybe I'm not a cat person. Maybe I'm a teensy bit allergic. No way would I deliver the frightened baby up for possible euthanasia. Maybe she belongs to somebody. Maybe St. Francis will protect me from allergy.
Dave and Ellwood ran out to buy some kitten food and cat litter.
I scurried to spring the mouse traps. She seemed content to be held, would nestle in, purring a bit, then take up her frightened, miserable cry.
She ate well. A little at a time. And drank some water. And some more. We took it easy knowing nothing about kittens or how long it had been since her last meal. I didn't want her to get sick.
She seemed to like Rosie, nestled in her arms with a little cat smile on her face, mewling every once in a while, kneading Rosie's arm. Not really afraid of people so we did not think she was feral. Rose put her down, and the kitten explored a little, then sprinted off. It was a long night.
We found a box, put an old shirt inside and a wood framed screen on top. And a couple of books on top of that because she could push up on the screen. She didn't spend a lot of time in the box, seeming more content to sleep in Dave's arms. It was a long night.
It stormed something fierce, rain hammering on the roof, thunder rumbling. Good thing Ajax heard the kitten and we brught her in and she was safe.

Next morning
She didn't seem to know what to do with the litter box. We were worried that she didn't pee. But she ate more food and lapped up plenty of water and at last, went on her own to the litter box. She knew what to do and the plumbing seemed in order.
She's poly-dactyl, she has extra toes like thumbs on her front and back paws like the six-fingered Anne Boleyn, a witch. Maybe she's magic. We could call her Queen Anne. We could call her Glynda.
I called up an animal rescue and they said if she seemed okay, it isn't an emergency to get her to a vet, just in the next few days. I told the woman we had some friends who were cat people who promised to stop by and take a look at the kitten. The woman said they had a cat clinic and provided shots at a reasonable price.
I went round the neighbors to see if anyone lost a kitten. We made up flyers but it's raining like it's the monsoon so the paper would melt. Tomorrow.
The kitten played with a shoe string that Ajax and Dave found, romped right cheerfully, then crawled in a corner under an old sewing machine. If you reach for her she hisses but once you pick her up, she seems very happy, rolled over on her back in my arms, stretched, then fell asleep.
She seems fuller than last night, a bit more substantial. Less delicate. But still delicate as a tender liittle kitten is. Just not in trouble delicate. Her fur even seems softer.
Sorry, I couldn't resist

Kitten gets comfty
We'll put up the signs. We'll let the cat friends visit and put in their two cents. We'll run her to a vet for a check up. Maybe somebody'll take her. Maybe they won't. Maybe we'll have a cat. You can't shit around with something like that, can't keep her for a while then dump her. But, I would never do that.
God dumps a kitten in your wheel well. It's a gift. A responsibility. She's cute. I like the name Sophie. Actually, I am so dumb, I'm not sure if she actually is female. Maybe Mishto.
Cats are great animals. Sensible, intelligent, great companions. Not as intense as a dog.
She's getting used to the place. If somebody took her off our hands, she'd be frightened again. And cry. I wouldn't want to see the little thing frightened. We keep telling her that she is safe here. I may be an ass in many ways. I may do things I should not do. But one thing I don't do is lie. Even to cats.
Rescue Kitten 5 Days Later
Well, the kitten is a boy and has filled out nicely. He is no longer the little bag of bones we found. His face is rounding out. The plumbing works. He uses the litter box and plays, running around the house having a good old time.
I took him to the vet for a check up, shots, worming, and flea treatment and was shocked how expensive it was not. Carney Animal Hospitol - they were kind, patient with both the kitten and new owner. The kitten now has an official name - Banjo.
He climbed up on the hutch - the one holding 100 year old plates - so I sprinked some hot peppers on the edge and put some peppermind oil in an old creamer. We will see!
Two weeks later

RockBlossom, funny I never knew what a calico actually was, but i just love the word calico, aww. Tortoise shells are beautiful, such rich color. I did not know that you could tell about the parents like that. hmmm. Thanks a lot!
I think you have yourself a loving, beautiful and thnakful little kitten...Enjoy her and remember, unlike dogs, a cat chooses you! Great story and pictures...Have fun!!!
Thanks, Nancy, She's still somewhat grumpy on the morning of day 2 - but she's running around the LR and ate and the plumbing is working so.....
Sooo cute...good luck. We have two that are now about 4 years old. Came to us when we moved here. Still obstinate..rule us..we are their staff :O) Guess they knew who to choose!
Grandma - my kids are pretty much grown, the youngest is almost 18, so now I can become a slave to a cat! Thanks for commenting!
Banjo is one lucky kitty to have holed up in your wheel well. Good job, Dolores. And Nancy's right: a cat chooses you. Smart kitty!
Thank you, Sally. I guess we are the ones that are lucky. He'is 8 weeks old and a very nice little kitty. He's filled out a bit, no longer the grubby little bag of bones we found. I should post a new photo. Banjo pretty much rules the roost right now. We have a house full of people so he'll be quickly socialized.
I saw on the news here the other night that so many people are giving up their cats in our area that the humane society is overwhelmed. The number of cats they are getting has more than doubled over the past year, and every morning when they come in there are boxes of cats, alive and dead, stacked outside their front door even though a sign on the door says "DO NOT LEAVE ANIMALS OUTSIDE DOOR" and there is a camera that catches the people who do it. It's very sad. I guess all the people losing their homes up here can't keep their cats and so now we have this .Good on you for giving that little guy a home. I love my cat. Honestly they don't ask for much. Good luck!
Thank you, Pam. I don't think I'll really need a lot of luck - we are lucky to have found him, he is one nice little animal, sweet natured and gentle. That is a sad story. While I am not (yet) one of those nuts who favors animals over people, it is a sad state of affairs when people are so economically stressed that they need to dump little kitties. It can't be easy for them.
So glad this is all working out! So precious, this is MY kinda blog :-) And I hope that St. Francis IS tending to your allergies (just in case, though, I will ask him on your behalf for reinforcement). As someone who has rescued his share of kitties in his day I gotta say that I think you have done everything right (rescuing critters is a learn-as-you-go venture). I do hope you keep him! I have no job to speak of right now but I wouldn't give up my cats for anything. Where there's a will there's a way. My two cats needed me when our paths crossed and I have NO intention of going back on the rescue by giving them up at this stage. BLESS YOU.
Just got back from OC. Congrats on your new arrival. I've got three kitties, and I loves em'. Keep us updated. Your Fan!
I also found a kitten. He was in a ditch that had dried some and he was stuck in that muddy ditch. My son spotted him as we were turning the conor on to bluelick rd in bullitt county/ between hillview. We didn't know how long it had been there or what if any damage had been done to him. I took him to the emergency animal hospital on outterloop.Thats how i know it is a male. Nothing broke, no open wounds, either bruised or nerve damage in front right paw. The whole leg use to drag and 5 days later just the paw seems to not come forward with his walk. I also do not want to take him to a place he maybe or likely put down. He meows and plays hasn't hissed or seemed in anyway unsociable. Any one interested please contact me. I have 2 dogs already, 2 fish tanks and 5 kids still at home. Husband is a truck driver and i just can't take on any more responsibility. We call him D.T on the account of when we founfd him he was in Deep Trouble. Hopefully someone is intrested in DT.........Tammy H.
for the kitten DT aka Deep Trouble i for got to tell anyone to contact me at my email address. tleegirl1@insightbb.com I do have plenty of pictures if anyone wants to see him
consultjtr - oh no way would I give up the kitten! Besides, even if the allergies did start up they'd go away eventually. And I have a friend who is a cat lover who wuld take him. He is safe and well loved. Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you, Olive, I'll pester you for advise.
Tammy, I hope you find a home for the kitten or wind up keeping him yourself. You are teaching your son the responsibility of compassion and the Dali Lama says that compassion is the first step on the road to enlightenment. Thanks for stopping by and God Bless you and your busy, intersting family. I hope some one emails you and all goes well!
That would be great if he DT could find a good home.I have bought a few thing for him. Such as a small bed, food ,liter. If not to far i would be willing to drive the little guy to them. As much as i would love to keep him, i just can't.Please contact me threw email if you have interest in him. I have tryed to find him a home threw friends and family. I was unsuccessful. I do not want to have to turn him into a shelter. Even if it is a not kill shelter. He has been threw enough. contact info... tleegirl1@insightbb.com thank you
I for got to mention, his front paw is in complete working order now. He runs all over the house, jumps, climbs and is rambunchious now.KNow damage perfectly healthy.
Tammy. You are starting to sound obsessed with the cat. I think you love him. You sound like youve got yourself a cat.
Dolores you are wise. I had planned on keeping him if i couldn't find a good home. As luck would have it my sisters cat passed away about a year ago, and she just hadn't seen a cat that what she calls "spoke to her".DT did and she was on her way to leave for vacation. She is going to cut her vacation short because she wants to get involved with DT immediatly. Thought you would like to know he has a great home and alot of spoiling coming to him. It's going to be hard to let him go he has grown on me. Thanks for listening and reading and replying.....Tammy in BULLITT COUNTY, KY
Tammy, I'm glad you found a home for DT and it's good that he's staying in the family. But your sister should never cut a vacation short!
i just fould the most cutiest kitty i have no idea what to do, but i do have 2 other cats and i gave the kitty some food. it is so skiney and sweet. if any one as any ideas on what to do that would be great!!!!!!!!!!!
Casi - if you have two other cats, you probably know what to do. If you can't keep the kitten, try to find a home quickly. People love kittens. Call your friends, call your local cat rescue, put the word out. Ask your neighbors, co-workers, family, everybody.

She's a calico, so she has to be female. The calico comes from one white cat and one tabby, via the X chromosomes. Male calicos are very rare, since they must have an extra X chromosome to carry the two colors.
Good luck with the kitten. My cat, a tortoise shell (black cat + tabby), is also a rescue cat that someone dumped out near my house.
