Mother loved cats - notably Siamese cats. She fell for this most elegant breed and after she brought home her first Queen, our house was never the same. Not that my mother would ever have admitted to being a cat lover, mind you, but it was pretty clear to us who ruled the roost at our house - sorry, Dad. Though she is no longer with us, mother's legacy lives on. We all love cats, and have, over the years, been staff to many of these delightful creatures.

Dad affected to be neutral, but the cats showered him with love and attention, so we knew it was merely a ruse. My father's wife, however, is a true cat lover. She loves all cats, Tabbies, Tuxedos, Manx, Calico, - you name it, she loves it! ...and she loves all things "cat".

It has become increasingly difficult to find unique "cat" gifts for her, she has been so showered with them over the years. We have on occasion gifted her with cat tea lights, cat pictures, cat plaques, cat glasses, cat stemware, cat pillows, cat blankets and throws. Dad worked in stained glass for some years and he made her beautiful cat framed mirrors, and a glass cat window hanging.

I remember when we celebrated our first Christmas with our newly expanded family. Hank and Sing-sing were much too mature to try climbing the tree, but their four charming off-spring had no such inhibitions.

The four tiny Siamese kittens looked so sweet playing Hide-and-Seek among the branches, it seemed a shame to chase them out.

We didn't actually lose any ornaments beyond a few glass balls because Dad had taken the precaution of hanging the tree from the ceiling and double anchoring it to the wall and the tree stand below.

Come Christmas morning, though, we had so much fun watching the kittens' antics that our father observed he could have saved a bundle on presents by simply buying a bunch of empty boxes, filling them with crumpled tissue, and wrapping them up.

Though he pretended not to, we knew he enjoyed their leaping in and out of boxes, and attacking each other from underneath the papers just as much as we did.

It seemed to take forever at the time, but finally my sister and I were deemed to be mature enough to be considered young ladies, and therefore old enough to carry a "purse". We had finally arrived and been admitted into the world-wide sisterhood of "young ladies".

No more allowance stuffed in the hip pocket. No more wallet bulge in the front jacket pocket. We now carried our wallets in our handbags like any other young lady.

Every other year or so for years thereafter, Santa, that canny old elf, would tuck a new wallet into the top of our Christmas stockings.

I would be inclined to keep that beautiful Mary Naylor bowl , from Henriksen, for a display piece, but I am sure Kitty would love it, too.

One memorable Christmas, I received among the other treasures, a mouse pad with wolves on it, It was a lovely treatment of a small pack standing just at the edge of the trees.

Unfortunately, my mouse does not like it, and refuses to run across the surface smoothly.

Needing a new pad anyway, i searched out one I particularly liked, that featured a lovely Tuxedo cat sitting demurely, gazing up at me. He had that "butter wouldn't melt" look - the one cats get just before they do something really, really naughty.

There was just no hope for it. At the most inopportune of times, my attention would be drawn by his gaze, and I would lose my place on the page or, worse, click the wrong button.

After a few such near disasters, I gave up using kitty, and reverted to a plain blue pad. Kitty is still in my drawer though, and I greet him each morning when I fire up my laptop. I just don't let him play with my mouse anymore.
