Knitted Hat Project
62Hey Mom Look What I Made
I'm about to embark on a huge knitting project. After being inspired by a knitter on Flickr, I'm going to be making 100 hats to give away. I just need to figure out all the details. With any luck, I'll design 100 hats and write a book about the adventure which means I need a publisher and a yarn sponsor and other important things. But I thought I'd get the ball rolling with this Hub.
I'm thinking of making the hats for people living in San Luis Obispo county. That's in Central CA. It's my favorite place to live and is an artsy community that will appreciate what I'm trying to put together here (I hope).
So if you are reading this and you live there, please flag me down or something.
Here are some photos of hat designs I am currently working on.

How to Apply For a Free Hat
1. Have an address with a San Luis Obispo County Zip Code.
2. Email me a photo of yourself looking straight into the lens like in the photo in the first or 2nd spot on this article (2nd one is a better pose). Send to queenofdreams@gmail.com and put FREE HAT in the subject line.
3. People will be chosen based on how well I think I can match a hat to their features and eye and hair coloring. I'm looking for 'real' people, not super models. I can't make any guarantees over who I will pick, but you have a better chance if you apply sooner rather than later.
4. Tell me three of your interests.
5. Be eternally patient. I'm knitting all the hats by hand by myself.
6. Let me know if you prefer wool or acrylic yarn.
7. After you get your hat, email me a photo of yourself wearing it, in the same pose as before. Hopefully at some point there will be a book, but that's just a wish right now.
8. One per person. Minors must have parental or guardian consent in writing.
9. At this point I plan to make 100 hats. Each one will be different. Fun!
10. Bookmark this Hub so you can see where you are in the hat line.

Thanks Stacie. If all else fails at least I'll have some cool hats to wear. Maybe you can write a hub on the South America project.
I know that some hospital volunteers make and give away newborn hats in low-income areas. Just a thought. What an amazing gift, wish we still lived in SLO!
True, but I need to keep track of each recipient. I do give preemie hats to a group already, which is certainly a worthy cause, but I thought it would be nice to give them to people that might be in my book someday. And frankly, so many programs focus on sick or poor people, and the everyday joe gets left out. Does that make any sense?
You don't live in SLO County anymore?
We live in San Francisco now because of HubPages. I hope someday we can move back as Paul and my parents still live there...nothing like grandparents! Plus, SLO is such a great community. Good luck with your project! ;)
100 hats sounds like a lot of fun.
You're right about the average citizen receiving no help in many towns. Have fun giving away hats! I look forward to your book when it is available!

Hi there,
Greetings from Malaysia!
It is so cool and nice of you for giving away 100 hats! I took up a knitting hobby 3 years ago and so far, I have knitted cotton blouses, skirts, cardigan and bags.
SLO is a great place. I graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and lived in Mustang Village 14 years ago. I am not too sure if it is still there.
I plan to visit SLO in this coming October and to check out if there are any changes. Is farmers' market still in existence?
Good luck for all your upcoming knitting projects.

Farmer's Market is going strong.
I was just in SLO last weekend and will be going back in Oct. for Pumpkins on the Pier in Pismo.
Good luck with your knitting.

What a cool idea! My director at work is making quilts for an orphanage in South America her friend volunteers at, and she's asked me to crochet some blankets. Your project sounds really neat.
I like to make my own hats too--I love your designs!
